Root Water damaged

hey guys my sister dropped her Desire in the toilet bowl (why is it always the toilet?? lol) So the 1st thing I did was to take out the back cover, battery and sd card to let it dry out for couple of days. In the meantime I noticed both white stickers on the battery and phone were red so I knew immediately the warranty was void! After doing some reseach I eventually put the phone in a bag of rice for 24hrs (Im guessing it was probably too late for that)

5 days on, the phone works except for 3 important buttons.. the up/down volume button, home and menu. Infact it seems like the left hand side of the phone is paralyzed! lol Trackball and back/search buttons work ok. Im guessing the water traces are all over the left side of the phone. What can I do?? She doesnt have insurance and Im pretty sure if she sends the phone back to her network/htc they will charge her pretty penny to fix those buttons.

Strangely enough I can get into hboot by holding the power and dwn volume button but once there I cant access other menus except fastboot via power button. I noticed one thing tho, the hboot menu flickers when trying to use volume buttons so it seems its not completely damaged?? So I sat there, contemplating on rooting and adding a custom rom on the phone to see if that fixes the button problems but obviously I know rooting is the easiest part it doesnt involve using any of the buttons but adding custom rom requires one to go into recovery which I cant do! So Im back to square one unless anybody got any suggestions?? I could leave it out to dry for further few days but what is my other options? Since the warranty is void should I dismantle the phone and see if I could wipe away the water traces??

Some independent phone stores do de-oxidation, but it depends on the severity. I know a chap who left his iphone out in the rain overnight, and got it fixed in a couple of days. Nightmare though. Always take insurance, but hindsight is a wonderful thing...

Sounds familiar to me this story, I dropped my 3 week old desire into the toilet, and not one with just plain old water in it, no, mine was full of a freshly flushed bloo loo block! First I screamed a bit, then a ran round like a headless chicken, then I pulled the battery, sim and SD card, wiped it with a towel and sat it on top of a hot radiator for 2 hours, and thank god it worked, no problems at all, infact that was my driving force to rooting it, as the little water indicators inside the phone were now shining red I thought I've got nothing to lose, so I did and haven't looked back and the phone and all buttons work fine, it was only a brief dip in the loo, but it was fully submerged for a good few seconds, suffice to say I now have a different routine whilst using my phone near a loo. :D

LOL that's gross!

Yeah I know. Personally Ive never insured any of my phones over the years cos I am extremely careful with it. But I cant say the same for my sister so I am defo gona recommend her to get insurance on her next phone.

I only had one phone repalced on Insurance. Lost / stolen in a bar one night. It was an expensive phone at the time. I'm glad it was insured as I don't feel I should lose out whilst a thief benefits from my loss.

I never leave my phone lying around. As soon Im done with it, it goes straight back inside my pocket.

Mine was in my pocket

Bets it was a back pocket?? Tut tut you're asking for trouble! lol I always put it back inside my front pocket. Infact my pant's left pocket is solely reserved for my phone. Its a no fly zone for keys or coins etc etc! Lol

No, I never use back pockets for anything, unless I have a receipt I need easy access too, or a form or something.

My left front pocket always has and always will be solely reserved for my phone. My right pocket tends to be empty or maybe cigarettes, depending on what I am wearing and where I am going..

Then how the fraaaaack did you lose your phone whilst in your front pocket?

Exactly. I don't know. It just disappeared. I could have been pick-pocketed. It was a very busy bar. Either way, it was gone forever and I was glad I had insurance.

I was with my fiance (then girlfriend), so chances are, yes.

She's insured too... Break her by accident - Courier replaces next day.

pants?...PANTS!?...you have pockets on your underwear? ;):D (obviously im taking the literal english meaning of pants not the american one lol)

anyways...

I only ever have a wallet in my back pocket...and usually I have very tight jeans..least where pockets are concerned so I know if some dodgy cockney has picked my pockets...but I agree with the 'reserved' pocket....its usually front right jeans pocket...unless im listening to music it then goes inside right inside jacket pocket for quick retrieval for song change'age...

and I haven't had phone insurance for the best part of a decade lol...maybe I should....one day lol

Dont call them underwear either. They are called "boxers" :D

Nah I wouldnt bother gettin insurance on your phone unless your clumpsy and forgetful lol

Ive been buying phones since 1997 and uptil now Ive lost 2 phones. Both times coincedently, in the same month two weeks apart back in 2007! And the funny thing is both times they were left behind in a taxi on a drunken nightout! Freakish incidents to say the least! lol Looking back, I got abit careless by not putting my phones away in my pocket but I learnt my lesson big time.
