Weird request regarding a Rifle I found...

I want to try to identify a rifle I found while going through the basement storage area in my new apartment building but I have no idea where to start other than taking it to the Police Station and possibly having them take it from me for free. It may be a toy for all I know. It doesn't appear to have anywhere to load anything and has an extremely small bore, maybe a BB gun. What kind of pictures should I post of it to get this process going before I do take it to the Police? Where should I look for maker marks, stuff like that? My community usually has a gun by back program every year and I want to hold onto it until then.

And with the buyback thing... that is one of the dumbest things politicians have ever thought of. You can get more money buy selling the gun to someone who will appreciate it, instead of tax money being used to collect guns and then more tax money used to destroy them.
 
If it's an older BB/Pellet gun, especially a pump gun, you may have something worth a few buck to a collector. try google for collectible BB/Pellet guns and look for some pics in the image search.
 
I'll get some pics up after 11;00 PM EST today. Anyone have any ideas where I should look for serial number or manufacturer info? I gave it a quick glance and really couldn't see anything like that on it.
 
Maker marks will typically be located on the barrel, but the marks may very well be under the forearm.
As far as what kind of pictures, some well lit pictures, some close up of where the action would happen around the trigger area, and some profile shots of it.

Perhaps it's a prop. Either a prop for a movie/TV show, or something used for training purposes.
 
I don't know much of guns...
but..how can it be a real gun.. with no obvious place to put ammo in?

it is a toy or prop: bb gun would be my guess.
 
Take it to a gunsmith. If you don't know one (seems likely) find a reputable gun store (NOT Academy or Walmart) and ask them to recommend a gunsmith. Or just search for a gunsmith in your area online. Worse case, take it to a gun show (if there is such a thing up north).

One more thing...lots of people have been killed, paralyzed or otherwise injured in accidents with a 22LR which is what you probably have if it is not a pellet rifle (even though most people assume that a cartridge that weak is harmless). DO NOT assume it safe to point at anyone or anything. Assume that it is loaded.

Keep it pointed with the muzzle end up or down. Normally I would recommend that you to keep it pointed up to protect the crown (tip) of the barrel...but if it has been rusting in a closet somewhere the crown of the barrel is probably trashed anyway.

Write it off as paranoia if you wish...but I would avoid police. They are there to enforce laws (and their most recent interpretation of them), not necessarily understand them. That does not require them to be friendly, helpful or a substitute for a lawyer.
 
It looks it might be a .22 rifle of some sort. Never seen anything like that before.

I'd take it to a gunsmith, actually a few different gunsmiths and see what it is and get a few assessments.
 
well folks the only two gunsmiths listed in Boston have such flaky names; Guns for Hire, Hired Guns, no websites and no reviews. I don;t think going to either one of these location would be a good idea.

I'm just going to have to take the silly thing apart and see what I can see, I think I can unscrew those big screws holding the barrel to the stock off (One is already partially unscrewed that whole metal assembly on top lifts up a bit) and see if there are any marks underneath. Then there's a kind of screw lid like thing near the end of the barrel that looks like it will come off, The problem with living in an urban environment Is I really don'y want to pull that trigger. There are gunshot detectors all over my neighborhood.
 
When I'm home I'm in one of the very high crime areas of Boston. A family was dragged out of their home in the middle of the night and gunned down 1 block over from me including a baby. The gunshot detectors triangilate the sounds and let the Police know where shots were fired. We've had them in Boston since 2008.

I'm going to tear down the rifle later tonight and post some more pics.
 
get a plastic milk (1 gallon empty) bottle...
put it on the ground..
put the barrow in the bottle ..
aiming it down into DIRT ground..
and pull the trigger.

we have one here too its called the shot spotter. the problem is that sometimes fireworks set it off and sometimes gunshots dont. its not that reliable but for the millions of dollars it cost to put in it does work most of the time correctly
 
I'm about %100 percent sure this is a BB gun after the tear down. As you can see from these pictures the barrel contains a spring and a piston and the trigger is a release mechanism. I guess it is missing parts to actually pump it or whatever they call compressing the spring in a BB gun.








One interesting thing about this piece is the fore post for sighting. I was looking at other BB guns from the 70's which is when I estimate this gun was probably produced based on my families history in this house. Daisy and Crossman were the most popular brands I recall from the 70's both appear to have used a ramp like fore post in their models from that time. Crossman and Daisy both had markings on the barrels and receivers so I know it's not one of those brands. There are no markings anywhere I can see on this particular piece. I guess it could be a project gun for someone interested in restoring it or as I originally posted if we have a gun buy-back program this year I can turn it in then. Probably won't get much for it though being a BB gun.
