Root Well, lets get the ball rolling

Against better judgement, I backed up my settings and will venture into modem mode and flashing.

Note that I do NOT have data as I'm abroad for 3 months. Therefore if I am successful and you follow my procedure I would not know whether or not data works. Therefore we would both take risks if you follow what I do.

Also, for anyone who wants to try this back up your aaa key NOW.

Best bet is to grab your msl (if you're not stock try 000000 otherwise send the file via mediafire, etc. to me and I can try to help look). ##DIAG# into DFS and grab your aaa key and other settings.

sorry meant hey hash, lol. Anyway I cannot for the life of me get lgnpst to do ANYTHING I ask.
not even open the DLL or even try to start the .tot which I should be able to do.

Lol your fine. It took about 20-30 minutes. And what happens when you try to open the DLL?

Yayyy! Thank you for risking this WhisperPntr!

The DLL wont load because I can't register it. I tried what you said and dumped it in 32 but nothing happened.. im going to try again maybe when i wake up after tonight, if I ever sleep...

I've never tried this but thought it might help.

Article - Knowledgebase - Support - Sophos

So if you can use CMD to register the dll then all you need is to put:

regsvr32 <path>\<filename>.dll

so like:

regsvr32 C:\Users\BliND\Downloads\VM926\DLL\VM926.dll

Or make a .bat in the same location as the dll and you should only need "regsvr32" and the name of the dll instead of the full path.

Did you copy the dll INTO the system32 folder, or did you drop it ONTO the file called regsvr32?

google "right click register" download and install the program. Works wonders for registry things in Windoze. I used it alot back before I got linux.

34% progress in flashing. Will edit this post once it is done.

EDIT
Ok, apparently the firmware tot upgraded successfully, though there is no obvious way to tell if it flashed correctly or if it just remained the same and did not flash despite lgnpst stating it did (latter is doubtful however). That said the phone did enter into download mode despite starting with ##diag# on, it did indeed reboot, nvram IS intact, phone looks healthy and hale, and I'm ready to test any root procedures.

Thanks again all for testing and of course jcase for sticking with us.

Did anybody else get a warning after virus/malware-scanning the copy of LGNPST from XDA?

ESET gives this warning:

I am about 95% certain it was a false positive.

Check you PM, sending you my gtalk now, will send you root, then if you don't mine, I would like to poke around with root for a few minutes to see if I can locate a safer method.

Uploading root now, then awaiting WhisperPntr. Is this phone also on Sprint or just Virgin Mobile? If it's on sprint as well then we have more work, this root is for the VirginMobile devices.

LG-VM696 - Virgin Mobile
LG-LS696 - Sprint

I think... I could be wrong.

Ok, initial root is VM696 ONLY. If used on the sprint version, you won't likely be happy. If someone has a sprint version then they need to get in contact with me

Jcase,

Currently on vm firmware though I have no service or data to Virgin mobile as I am abroad. I therefore only have wifi so I hope that I may still prove to be useful.

I will need free time to install all the programs to allow access for you so give me at lastest 6pm PST (aka 9am my time in Hong Kong) tomorrow.

If you are confident in your abilities to run command line commands, I don't need remote access (be surprised at some ppl not knowing what a command line is).

I am surprised, especially when they want to root.

Hit me up with your root protocol and if there's anything I don't initially understand, I'll google it, etc.

In the meantime I'll see how I can grant you remote development access.

thanks once again

UPDATE
Oh it's just teamviewer remote access? That was easy. If it's easier for you to be granted remote access, we can do it that way as well,

Can anyone tell me what block device system is on?

adb shell mount

The line that has /system in it is the one i want
