We's gettin' a Lapdock! Date & Price

Great move by Motorola. That is awesome, even though Verizon customers w/ the Bionic will get first stab at owning it. Then again, what's to prevent non-Verizon customers for purchasing this for their MoPho or Atrix 2? It only mentions those 3 phones, but I'm wondering if this would also work for the Electrify, since it's in essence the MoPho w/o 4G.

so drex,

this is basically a laptop that runs off your phone ? that'd be awesome

any idea on how much this costs ?? the atrix 2 lapdock runs for how much ??

I'm guessing $200.

I'm hoping the for that price as well, i cant wait!!! YEAH!!!!

I'd love it to be $200. That would seem underpriced to me. Regardless, that thing might prevent me from upgrading again next year! I already love the car dock and HD dock they made for the moPho. The lapdock would just put it over the top.

I just figured since it attaches via a cable as opposed to an actual dock it should be priced more affordable. Although there is always the "early adopter tax"to contend with.

That may depend. I read elsewhere that the new lapdock has a built in Wifi N Radio, if so that might bring up the price on a dummy terminal. (not that the dummy terminal was ever cheap, the original was i believe close to $499 with Atrix phone.

Also read that it will have Openoffice, and Google Docs, but the article does not mention if those two are on the dock or via the phone itself. if on the dock then that implies that the dock will have some kind of storage/mini os. just the fact that the article mentions it has built in Wifi N radio, implies that will have to be connected to some kind of i/o source.

I guess we will have to wait till Oct 17 and hit the AT&T store to check out their version.

And speaking of Lapdocks, i wonder if Motorola will sell those cables separately. If so, it would be cool to see that they can attach to the previous existing Lapdock and make that accessory compatible with the photon (at a much cheaper price if the new one is too expensive).

oh and sorce of that wifi n radio on the Llapdock 100 is here.

so, Motorola finally release the Lapdock 100 which is supposed to be the generic lapdock for the atrix 1/2, bionice, and photon right? why in the hell is it being released in stages starting with ATT? if its a generic item, why limit where you are selling?

i got the photon and if it's "1 lapdock fits all", well then guess i will be buying my lapdock from ATT :-\

someone is getting screwed by marketing it sounds like.

I was trying to figure out the logic behind that also...LOL. I completely agree. Doesn't make sense.

The reason for that is because the lapdock 100 is not really interchangeable between the Photon, Atrix, Bionic. Each carrier will have its own version of the lapdock.

The price did get reduced down to $249.99 for the Sprint version and will come out on Oct 21.

As for my hope that the rear cable can be interchanged with another cable (to connect whatever phone you want, thus allowing you to get the At&t one since thats coming out first), I'm sorry to say is not to be. The cable looks hard wired to the dock. This would explain why each carrier gets to sell its own at different dates etc etc.

For a really nice writeup/hands on of the Sprint Lapdock 100 see the gottabemobile article as well as the video showing the rear connection point.

Nice. I can deal with $249. Anybody know if they're still allowing the 25% discount for premiere members or did that go away when they switched the policy on the 2nd?

Just had a bad thought...Sprint isn't going to add a tethering fee onto your account so that you can use this device, are they? Will they be able to tell that you are using this, or will it be the same as using the phone to surf the web. I am hopeful that since it is really just a keyboard and screen extension for the phone that they will not charge extra for it, but i am concerned.

did you ever find out if the premier discount on accessories still exists?

I can't see how a tethering fee would apply. The phone's internet connection is not being used to connect the lapdock. The lapdock is just converting the functions on the phone onto a bigger viewing area that has a keyboard attached.

Technically and logically that is correct, but I guess those idiots over in AT&T didn't figure that out and decided to charge folks for a tethering plan.

I don't think Sprint is that stupid especially since they keep providing the unlimites speach, but if they do then I'll just get one off of ebay and proceed as normal.

Besides if we have an unlimited plan on the phone, how can they possibly say we are tethered to the lapdock?

Speaking of lapdocks, I went to a corp store today and as usual no one knows anything about the Lapdock or that it is even dropping this Friday.

I also went to a AT&T store to see if I can look at the Lapdock (old and new) and the two stores I hit did not have one on display, but they sure had a lot of iphonys and zombies reaching for one.

Wow, really? I don't see how the lapdock is any different than using a HD dock, connecting a bluetooth keyboard to your phone, and using the phone's internet connection to browse on a big screen TV.

The lapdock is just a portable version of what can be accomplished using the HD dock for each phone. Sprint hopefully doesn't follow AT&T's lead.

Yeah I know.

I seriously hope that the two guys I talked to at the corp store were simply not informed and that it does appear this Friday. I'm going away next week and really would hate to lug around my heavy laptop which by the way the screen only works if I connect a monitor to it. lol I can't see myself traveling with a monitor and laptop lmao.

If it doesn't appear on Friday or Saturday, then ebay will be my only recourse unless I go get another laptop and I rather not with the lapdock almost in reach.

Called my local sprint corporate store and they didn't know anything about it...but that means little as they usually don't. He did say that the 25% discount for premiere members is good through the end of the year, but that you have to buy 2 or more accessories to get it. I guess I will be looking for a cheap accessory.

hmmm I completely forgot about the 25% discount for premiere members.

You know what gets me. I am surprised that there isn't a knockoff of this type of design from overseas. They make knockoff of everything else and this thype of design has been out since Feb with the Atrix one. How hard would it be to make a keyboard with dummy lcd dock that has a mini usb and mini hdmi port. With the hdmi webtop hack it would be just a matter of hooking up the ports to the dummy terminal.

ps. even with this old review of the original lapdock, I still one one.

btw has anyone made a review of the old and new lapdocks side by side? I see the original one is super slim and feel the newer ones are a bit thicker but I can't prove it.

I believe the news media got it all wrong.
On the Motorola website it still shows as Coming soon, AT&T, which was suppose to have it already does not show it on their website either and they were suppose to get it first. Being that I need it for my trip next week I went ahead and ordered the Bionic lapdock off of ebay so it can get to me before the trip. One news media mentioned today for Sprint, but I've been told that thats when the training for them for Sprint employees start and that it won't be sold until much later, but who knows at this point.

When they do ship the Lapdock 100 or 500, I'll get it then. And the Bionic Lapdock, I'll sell on ebay. In a way this may be a good sign cause I rather have the bigger Lapdock 500.

called two sprint stores today. Neither knew anything at all about the lapdock, and did not have them in stock. Other sites mention Oct 24th release, but I am certainly not counting on that. I had not seen anything about the new 500 lapdock, but looked it up. Like the bigger screen and apparently bigger battery...will have to see pricing and more details to decide.

I also like the fact that on the lapdock 500, there is a vga output. I currently use my own laptop at work connected to an external monitor to do personal stuff since the company has that websense crap from stopping me looking at forums. how dare they. Anyway, my plan is to eventually replace the laptop with the lapdock. The lapdock will have ubuntu on it (actually the photon will, not the lapdock) and some kind of application/desktop virtualization like Citrix Receiver or LogmeIn to access my home pc with all my files and I'll be set.
This is the way of the future and I love it.
