Root what am i doing wrong

unrevoked 3 root or forever dont remember. skyraider vanilla. trying to download either athena or the new skyraider 3.5 gets through the download asks to back up existing rom or wipe data. i dont check either then hit ok phone shuts off and when it comes back, its stays on the white "htc incredible" screen for over an hour. i tried from the boot screen, hold down volume and power. nothing in that screen gives me any options to install from sd card. thinking about just un rooting cause what i really wanted it to do didnt help at all. i wanted better battery life. 4hrs is not good enough. i have tried every option known to man to get a better battery life.

The problem is most likely that you choose not to wipe before installing. You should be able to enter hboot like you already did, then use the volume keys to highlight "Recovery", then press the power button once. This should bring you to Clockwork Mod. Once there, wipe data, wipe cache, under "advanced" wipe dalvik cache (all back to back), then choose install zip from the SD card, then choose zip from SD card, find your Rom in zip format and load it. Should be fine from then on.

If you have made a nandroid backup previously, you could instead use the backup/restore function in Clockwork and then restore a previous setup.

Since you were attempting to load the Rom using Rom Manager, you may not currently have the Rom on the SD card, I'm kind of assuming you don't. If that's the case, when you're in Clockwork, first use the mount USB option and then transfer a downloaded Rom onto the card beforehand. Then do the steps mentioned earlier to load the Rom via Clockwork.

Another note, when navigating in Clockwork, the trackpad button is used to select an item and the power button brings you back to the previous menu. Different from how you select in hboot.
