What America Does Right

1976 Honda SuperSport 750/5 F (later called F1 when they came out with the F2) Original yellow tank and bolsters on the bench - Honda racing tank in black with grey bolsters on the scooter today, custom wheels, cafe handlebars, K&N filters with modified intakes, et cetera.

Accessories provided courtesy of pal, Steve Barnett, permanent #9 racer and record holder.

If you ever saw that vid that made the commercials for years (we were younger) about the racer that slid for a mile spashing his ride - that was Steve. He hit a frog at what would've been the new speed record on a 69 750/4 with an awfully pretty nickel-plated frame and carbs you wouldn't believe - frog liquified under the front tire.

He gave me some parts and accessories. :)

Harleys are great, too. I wait for them whenever I can. :D (edit - a hog seats two, mine only one - so there is that)

Nothing like desmodromic valves to prevent float at speed however, I must say.

Which leads us to - the Indian, America's first, but that's another story.

I think we should focus on what America does better as of today. I see a lot of past things... Some very long ago. In today's world, I'd probably have to say... A lot of things computer related, whether it be software or hardwre. Microsoft, Apple, and Google are the giants for consumer related stuff.

I am going to disagree with you. Oh, by the way, please allow an old fart to say how hot, hot, hot you are. I digress.

We are what we are because of what we did in the past. Lots of inventions and ideas made us great. I simply want to know what some of those things are. Feel free to spin this thread as you see fit.

But Indian is important and it must be a part of the discussion, I should think. Bob loves Chiefs and Sport Solos. Not likey much what passes for the current reiteration of that noble marquise.

For fun, Google "The World's Fastest Indian" and read Rollie Free's story. Amazing just how much an Indian can be tweaked.

we don't even do baseball right anymore. :(

so apple pie is all that's left.

Seriously - don't leave out pizza delivery, franchising, and TV programming (by def, has to include our movie industry).

Personally - I don't think we've done baseball right ever since the introduction of the super-zoom TV lens.

If you are taliking about movies and the TV industry, let me add two more:

Panavision Camerra
The Techniocolor IB Color motion picture process. It is a process with absiolutely no equal, regardless of what country you are talking about.

we can't do TV right. we copy other country's programming(Who Wants To Be a Millionaire, The Office, etc...). not to mention all the dumbass reality crap thats on tv also.

we can't do movies right. notice all the remakes(of movies and old TV shows)? and crappy remakes at that.

what America does right: get in the way of anyone invading Canada

I dunno...

We have lots of choices for lots of channels to choose either high quality programming or brain-dead mush. Elsewhere - maybe not so much.

No arguments - Hollywood tends to produce the same formulas over and over - but so does Bollywood.

Except, we put out Avatar (kinda lame story told REALLY well), and a whole segment of the Asian economy changed.

Avatar...another re-tread.

Asians LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE blue humanoids.

ohhh i figured out another thing America does right: video game developers!

Let me use Hollywood to cover both the TV and Movie industries.

I think Hollywood does it right. They are a business and as such, they need to show a profit. Reality TV is cheap to produce and if a show is popular in one country, it might be popular here. So we give it a go.

When we want to create something great, we can do it. But greatness often costs money and I will admit that sometimes we finance big movies that are less than big at the bottom line. And less than great, too.

I do not follow the box office, so how much do these

Several posters have already pointed out a few of the things I was going to mention (mainly the mod who mentioned the Internet and microprocessors).

Here are a few I can think of:

Highway system (and modern infrastructure)
The light bulb (big props to Thomas Edison, who like me hails from NJ)
Advanced forms of weaponry including but not limited to the atomic bomb
Crazy conspiracy theories (Area 51, etc.)
NASCAR
Popular music
Too many scientific and medical advances to list
Eggo's

Weapons for sure. Unless you consider the Metal Storm Weapon System.... I think we could have thought that one up, quite frankly. It fires at the rate of one million rounds per minute.

Love Eggos, I must admit.

Yes indeed. Thanks for the post. When you say our many inventions, care to name a few? Gosh, there are certainly lots of things we do better than anyone else.

Bob Maxey

PS: I might remind people that saying America does something better than another country is pride, not other country bashing.
To name a few:the computer,mass produced auto,which made them more affordable,television,light bulb,telephone,numerous medical med's & devices.

America saved Europe from being Nazi Germany. America is the greatest country in the world and Europe is in debt to us for the rest of time.

They do not teach it to their students in Europe anymore due to anti-American sentiment, but if you talk to the older people, like my Nono (grandpa) who lived in Italy at the time.. Americans were loved, adored, and heros of the world.

So quickly to forget Europe is. You are what you are because of the US.

OOO RAA.

OOO RAA.

U - S - A, U - S - A.

OOO RRAAA.

Sorry that one was an international effort. Yeah, Celera was an American company, but the HGP had centers in the US, Europe and Japan.

Oops! I knew a lot of people working on that in the center here in New Mexico - I didn't bother to check.

OK - America is one of the best team players for the HGP, the Boeing 777 and the International Space Station. <ducks>

We still have the largest manufacturing base, though China is making strides to close the gap.

Biggest/best higher education system. 12 of the top 20 worldwide programs. 4 of the top 5 in science and engineering.

We're also the biggest giver of foreign aid (for better or for worse). Of course, if you compare it to GDP it's a completely different story.

We're easily the best at war. Again, this is a double edged sword, but it's certainly true.
