Help What apps am I missing?

I've had my phone for @ 6 months. Let me tell you that I have a computer at work, and a computer at home, so I do not need to use the smart phone that much when I have a computer in front of me at almost all times. Also I hardly travel at all

The main apps I go to are Fox News and CBS Sports and MLB, obviously for news and scores. And also Weatherbug.

So here's my question, what am I missing?

Is there some application for a smart phone that I'm overlooking? Something that almost every smart phone owner must have? I'm just asking?

That's going to be completely based on your personal needs. For me, I must be able to block ads. I loath them. Can't stand them, and refuse to allow them on my phone. So I rooted my phone and installed AdFree Android.

So you see, what may be a "must have app" for me may not be a must have app for you. ;)

I really like doggcatcher (for podcasts).
I also use google music, not the standard one, but the one that syncs with your google music account.
Like NoNameFace said it is all going to depend on how you use your phone. For general things I like Dolphin Browser and k-9mail.

Could you elaborate more on dogcatcher ,sounds interesting, might be something I hadn't realised that I was missing.

I'm like you, 8 hrs computer at work, 3 hours computer at home, but my "must have" on my phone:

Dropbox - Android app on AppBrain
GrooVe IP | AppBrain Android Market (for wifi, no cell service at home)
Business Calendar for Android | AppBrain.com
Google Tasks Organizer Lite for Android | AppBrain.com
(I use tasks on my PC iGoogle home page, and calendar, this syncs and looks good)
FX File Explorer (Beta) - Android app on AppBrain (just so easy to use, and transfer data to PC's)
Webkey (ROOT REQUIRED) | AppBrain Android Market (in case of "emergency")

It is an app that will fetch/sync podcasts for you. It has a great search/recommendation function. It has an included player that keeps your spot marked for multiple files. There is a lot more to it, I am not doing it justice, but those are the basics.

The apps I can't live without are App2SD,Androzip, clipbot, dictionary by Troid, fast reboot,Auto Answer, WiFi radar,WiFi Analyzer, outSSIDer,Netflix,TV. Com,Extended Controls, My Cast Weather lite, yellow pages(black yp in a yellow square),minutes checker for virgin mobile,BS player lite, note everything, password book, fresh network, and last but not least ,Kinetoo( the best cloud based anti viral and bad site checker)it will also let you do a complete file scan of both system and uSD card.

This was just my can't live without list. I have 122 downloaded apps.

Thank your for this information. I am in need of a application or whatever to use as calendar and/or organizer. I normally buy a paper calendar but decided not to this year.

I'm talking about an application where I can jot(type) something down and go back months later to remember. For example, if I paid off a bill on 5-25-10 I can easily pull up the calendar today and go back and see where I paid it off, including the amount paid. Is this something Google Task Organizer or Business Calendar for Android is good for? Not only on my computer, but easy to see on a smart phone also? Also, can they store phone #s and addresses? Real addresses, not email? I'm sure they can on the computer, but can I easily see them on a smart phone?

Once again, thank you for letting me ask.

PS: The only webpage I have is "MyYahoo" that I set up years ago. I'm sure I'm way behind on this, even for my computer.

I use Jorte (it's in the android market) for my calendar. It syncs with the Google calendar and you can check it online through that. The stock google calendar app fails pretty bad in my experience. I also have my wife using Jorte, and we can sync between our phones (through the google calendar). You can make notes for each day. It is everything I need for a calendar. There are probably other excellent ones as well. I think tcat007 mentioned something similar (or I am hallucinating).

There are excellent note apps apart from a calendar too, others have already mention some. I like evernote personally.

Your phone will store your contacts (phone #, postal address, email and more) and it is linked to your Google account so it can be pulled to another Android phone, if you replace your "V" with another one or upgrade it to something else at some point.

Yeah, that was mine for about 8 years... I just changed it to iGoogle (mainly for some of the gadgets). On my phone I have a custom HTML page with a few bookmarks from my PC Firefox browser. Looks like this when I open Boat Browser Mini:

Note everything allows you to tag a page with what every you want(what's in the page and the date etc.). It also allows you to leave voice recorded reminders. This is what I use to remember everything. From things I've done to an important URL's that I can open to right from the app. Plus record grocery reminders and such. I think this sort of app might be just what your looking for. I could not function without it.
For things I need to keep personal I use secret delivery to encrypt a page. Then when I need to, I use the app to decrypt.

Cool... I'll need to try that one. I forgot, I also use Fox to Phone (from my home and work PC's that are on Firefox), to the Chrome to Phone app on my phone. Anytime I'm browsing something on my PC I may want on my phone (like a map), I just click the icon in the toolbar. Sends a link to that page to my notifications tab.

QLOUD MEDIA!!!!!! Put those computers to work :)

Oh, also, if you're a music junkie, not video (video killed the radio star), AUDIO GALAXY!!!!

Both require servers on a computer to be running, with the computer on. With our limited storage and to save your sd card for apps, these two are phenomenal.

Thanks everyone.

Based on what I see here it looks like I need to be checking out Jorte and the Google Calendar, and also that Fox to Phone app on Firefox.

Might take a few days to though. Got to work for that paycheck. :)

The stock calendar does this well, and syncs with google on your desktop/the web, of course. It's easily searchable.

Another question for anyone: Is there such a thing as a note pad to write something down on the Optimus V? Just a note pad to type something that is easily accessible, without going to a calendar?

Why, of course not! Who has ever heard of such a fantastic thing as an app with the functionality of a simple notepad? Such a marvelous invention could only exist in a magical place teaming with untold numbers of such little helper apps

There are a lot of different note apps on the market.
I like Evernote as I can sync it with my computers and my wife's phone as well.

I have noticed a peculiar phenomenon here on this forum. Normally rational, intelligent members loosing there ability, and or desire to think for themselves. I know we try are best to give the most sound advice possible here, and are able to find complex info about many problems seemingly with ease, but, there are somethings that were going to have to allow members to find on there own. If they reaserch a problem first by reading the threads here in this forum first(which will answer 60% of there questions) and comb the market for that elusive app(all this before asking questions), then not only will we be encouraging them to think for themselves again; but it will help them to help others. A friend of mine said it best " a teacher never tells and a teller never teaches". I am the worst one about not following this advice sometimes, because of my eagerness to help out. Sometimes we just should point them in the right direction and let them discover on there own. Always ready to be there in case they have a really hard question.

I ask friends and co-workers with android phones what cool apps they use. The fact that the people here are even posting on these forums means they have done more research than most of those co-workers. What is hard for one person may be ridiculously simple for another. And some people don't want to do much research, but that doesn't mean people shouldn't help them (it also doesn't mean that YOU have to help them either, that is entirely up to you).

You make a good point, I agree. This is all just my personal opinion, and I completely respect your right to a differing one.

Really what I was trying to say is that we need to be careful not to cater to much to the OP's and find everything for Them. This will not help them figure out how to find the info. Instead it spoils them and makes them more dependent on someone else.
If we are going to continue to have members who are willing to help they need to learn the skills it takes.
Some of the info we use to help an OP is based on our own mistakes. The rest is based on reading about someone else's mistakes. We can't possible remember every post word for word so we have to figure out how to find it.
This is kind of what I was trying to say. Still don't think I nailed the idea, feeling.

....and I'll say again, AppBrain really should be the first app installed on every phone. It allows people to search for the apps they want, see how popular they are, and get recommendations for apps they might not have even known they couldn't live without :)

It's the best self-help tool for apps, IMO of course.
