what are the default startup scripts on fresh install

Hawker

Android Expert
I installed the performance mod for Siyah. Upon examination I found that it places a file in system/etc/init.d called 01performance. files in the init.d folder are what get executed when the device boots up.

as I got a big drain overnight, I decided to run the kernel cleaner script and re-install the Siyah kernel itself, expecting this to clear the tweak. I then looked in the init.d folder again only to find this file still there. Therefore, the tweak still gets executed on bootup, and is still active. I am wondering now whether or not to manually remove the file.

It concerns me as I installed Ragemod, and this file is STILL there, so I'm a little worried as to what places files in the startup scripts folder, and the fact that many such files may be lingering there unnecessarily. Chances are these scripts have been built up from previous kernel tests and tweaks etc, so worried as to what is getting run at startup that perhaps shouldnt be. This could be the cause of so many people having such varying results with kernels.

I was wondering:

1. What are the standard init.d script file names (if any)? Is 01performance a modded default file, or a new one added by this siyah tweak
2. as well as /system/etc/init.d, there is also /etc/init.d. This appears to be a copy of /system/etc/init.d. What is the difference? Does one take precedence over the other? If a file is removed from one folder, will the other get run instead?

in my /system/etc/init.d (and therefore /etc/init.d) folder I have the following files:
i also have in here:
01performance
05module
90ram-tweaks
98mounts
99complete
S02modules

What do you have in yours?

I'm on using MIUI Kernel at the minute.
This is what I have:
01sysctl
05modules
06deafaulttheme
07internalsd

I get the same when I flash siyah v2.0 dual boot kernel

i might zap 01performance and S02modules from /system/etc/init.d
i'll see if these files then get removed from /etc/init.d on a reboot

its a little worrying, as theoretically a lot of crap could build up here

Edit.
I zapped those two files. S02modules inserted a module called cifs.ko, which is something to do with samba file sharing, so i dont need this

after deleting from /system, these 2 files were automatically removed from /etc/init.d so it seems this is a direct copy of /system/etc/init.d

Mine has the same (apart from voltage control folder) the performance file seems to have important stuff in thou??

Good luck old boy!

I have to confess that I lost you in your first post. Right after, "I installed the performance mod for Siyah".

I await your deliberations. It would be nice to resolve the different conflicts we experience.

Sorry, don't understand some of this. Does that mean I can just delete this performance folder

its a file within init.d folder syd.
i just removed it from mine without a problem.

bottom line is, if you EVER install that siyah mod, then it will ALWAYS be there from that point on. A little worrying especially for people (such as myself) who experiment with different tweaks, kernels etc. as this folder could possibly build and build and build with lots of stuff you dont necessarily want.

Next time I do a factory reset, I will make a note of all the default files in this folder, and I'll write a script to remove all files barring the default ones.

I take it you installed the Siyah tweak Syd
performance script

This installed /system/etc/init.d/01performance
this is ok to delete.

if you saw benefits from this tweak then keep it there.

i also deleted S02modules (as neither ironass or steslatt has this file on theirs) this inserts a module called cifs.ko, which is something to do with samba file sharing. As far as I'm aware I dont use this so I deleted this too.

After you delete from /system/etc and reboot, the mirror copy (/etc/init.d) will reflect your changes, so those files will also disappear from there too

you've not mounted it as writeable butty
i would be interested if someone else on siyah who has not installed that tweak, if they have an 01performance file?
just not 100% sure yet if it gets created or amended by the tweak

Ok, thickie here didn't mount it as r/e.g. Now gone. Phone seemed to suddenly go brighter as soon as deleted, was there a brightness mod in there or just coincidence?

Nope, not with 2.2RC2.

I've been futzing around all afternoon calibrating and profiling my monitors and printer, but I'm about to sit down with a coffee and see exactly what that 'performance' patch does. I'd rather test it without introducing another script, just in case. ;)

I have:

01performance
05module
90ram-tweaks
98mounts
99complete

I'm still very much on a learning curve with Android, so am constantly looking for parallels with Windows... it's a bit disconcerting and I'm beginning to think a little more caution is called for when running scripts on an unfamiliar system... on the other hand, you can't learn to swim without getting wet.

So, if system/etc/init.d is the Android equivalent of Windows boot.ini, where is the registry and would that not get progressively more clogged up with old data poo?

Proper well-designed operating systems don't have something as vulnerable and bloated as the Windows Registry. It's a horrible, evil creation. :)

The init.d contains the scripts to run, and the naming of the scripts controls the order e.g 01xxxx followed by 05xxxx, 90xxxx, 98xxxx and finally 99xxxx.

Nice one Slug, that's 2 important pieces of info right there! :)

It's sort of like biology on an alien for me at the mo! :D
