Probably the kind most of us make; the kind that make you wish you could turn back the clock five minutes, but since you can't you best exit stage right fairly quickly and never speak of it again. Actually... the vast majority of Americans wont even know where a state is located in relation to another state depending on the location where that person is located. For example, it would be a little difficult for a West Coaster to answer...

What state is to the right of Maryland? or What state is to the south of Vermont?

and for an East Coaster...

What states make up the 4 corners? or What state is to the NE of Utah?

Until this summer, I never knew that Massachusetts was north of NYC. I imagined it kind of in the place of Maryland. My roommate made fun of me for it but understood because he wasn't too sure what states touched CA.

Me: Well, I need to rent a car from you (located in Las Vegas) in two weeks and I will be driving it to Albuquergue, is that alright?

Me: I'm just wondering if it's okay if I take a rental car from here in Nevada to New Mexico.
Agent: I'm sorry, I'm not very good at history.
Me: (choking at this point) Can I take a rental across state lines?
