Root What battery-saving Kernel with EVO HTC Sense?

Wendemi

Newbie
I just rooted my evo using Unrevoked 3 and everything went well. I tried a couple of ROMS (Cyanogen and Fresh) and realized I like HTC Sense better, so I went back to HTC Sense. Now I am just looking for a kernel to enhance my battery life. Which one would you recommend for the HTC Sense? A download link would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

congrats on rooting!!!
check out the one in my sig. works well for me on most roms. basically any of the netarchy toastmod kernels should do well. you can go to ref#2 to get a list of kernels to try. also keep in mind that not all kernels will behave the same way on different phones.

you can use setcpu app from the market. here is a guide to help you out. http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/210253-setcpu-guide.html this will help out with battery life and also can make things a little more zippy. i have mine set to 1035/245 with conservative scaling and one profile 128/128 screen off, powersave scaling, and a priority 100. i'm at 18hrs and 68% off charge.

Thanks for the info. I flashed the Netarchy Toastmod Kernel but I read that it does not work well with PRI 1.90, which I have on my phone. What PRI version do you have? Do we really need to downgrade to PRI 1.77, as suggested by the XDA developers, to get the benefits of longer battery life? I understood the process is kinda complicated for people like me. I am about to get SETCPU from the market.

I am using 1.90 PRI and using the netarchy-toastmod-CFS-havs-nosbc kernel (4.3.1) and I'm not seeming to have any issues. Took it off the charger about 6 hours ago and I'm sitting at 71% battery right now. I listened to a podcast for about a half hour this morning, 20 minutes of kindle time on the can, and have been playing MP3's at work for the last hour and a half or so, so I am pretty satisfied with those results.

I'm running SetCPU with just the smartass governor and no profiles.

Have you looked at:

If you have. Then Netarchy Toastmod is a good Sense kernel to start with. If you're having issues with the PRI draining your battery you can downgrade from 1.90 to 1.77. Keep in mind that not everyone is having issues with it. Run the kernel with your current PRI and see if your battery seems worse with your normal usage. You can also set up a screen off profile with with setcpu. I usually keep mine at 245/245 or 384/245 if my phone seems laggy from wake. Try smartass or conservative scaling within setcpu.

I currently have the All-In-One Sprint Lovers ROM with the Netarchy/Toastmod 4.3.2 cfs-nohavs-nosbc-noUV-universal (no undervolting) and followed the recommendations for setCPU. I guess I'm wondering if this is an ok combination? There seems to be a host of ROMs and kernels and it would be hard, I think, to go through them all to find the better or best combination. I feel that I would do something bad.
And what is the smartass governor on setCPU? I can't find an explanation anywhere.

Here's some info on smartass:

Smartass Governor info

So is there any consensus on whether a sleep profile is more effective or whether just selecting smartass as the default is better for saving battery life? I'm sure everyone has different experiences with it, but just curious as to whether or not there is any good data as to which is more effective.

Right, but is just using smartass more efficient than using "conservative" as default with a sleep setting in addition to that? My sleep setting is "powersave" with the 384/245 as my max/min.

I remember seeing a post over at xda that stated smartass was really good at conserving power when the screen was off or phone was sleeping. But once the phone was active or out of sleep it drained faster than conservative. Conservative was more consistent in battery saving so to speak.

How is your battery life with this combination? I have the same combination and my battery life is A LOT WORSE than when my phone was not rooted. I also have SetCPU on conservative. What other sense-based ROM do you guys think is less heavy on battery?

I am happy to report that by flashing the kernel stated above the phone is down to 75% after 16 hours from unplugged. I have G3, Wifi, and GPS on. SetCPU is set to max: 883 MHz, min: 245 MHz, conservative scaling, one profile: Screen off 245/245 100 conservative. Usage: Cell standby 38%, Phone idle 34%, Wifi 16%, Android System 9%, Display 3%. Brightness set to 30-40%. Moderate usage, e.g., little FB, words with friends, emails, and some texting.

I'm scaled down to 128MHZ and scaled up to 1.13GHZ on conservative setting using Set Cpu and I used to carry extra batteries with me now. Where as I still do, I only use about two batteries a day compared to the 4 I was using in a day. I am a heavy user.

this may be odd but, i cannot scale down to 128, seems that my phone takes too long to "wake up" for a call if i'm that low... phone will ring 4 or 5 times on callers end before mine does... 245 works fine... my setcpu - 1190 / 245 smartass, screen off 245 / 245 powersave...
