Root what do custom roms do

What exactly do custom roms do besides move buttons around and change icons? Is there a good list of how each Rom differs from stock?
 
Well, one really cool thing that Virtuous does is it comes with an app called Virtuous buddy where you can find another app called hulu which allows you to watch hulu on your phone. The screen shots got nothing to do with this, I'm just showing off

i know what a rom is and how to install it. I'm running the latest Business Sense Official. I've played with a couple of others. What I'm asking is, besides moving the buttons around, changing the icons and feel of the phone what else do they do? And is there any good descriptions of how a specific rom differs from stock.

I've seen the incredible list, and even in the posts for specific roms, they don't get too much into how it differs from stock.
 
Depends what rom you choose on how much it differs from stock. MIUI for example is a completely different interface, nothing stock about it. I'm running the gingerbread rom which is a step above the stock rom. Some roms offer speed/battery enhancements, while others just are themed different. The best way to find out is to just flash one.

Roms are just really about customization and everything on android can be customized. It all depends on what you are looking for.

looked in virtuous buddy to find hulu..can you provide steps on how to find/enable hulu through virtuous buddy?
