What do I need for storage?

Atma

Extreme Android User
I'm still a little confused about storage on the N7.

Will I be able to plug it into my pc and transfer files?

Or do I need this to plug in a flash drive or sd card?

From what I've read you can plug it into your PC and transfer files. That card reader thing looks pretty cool tho.

Actually, with my phone, I find that using File Expert to transfer files via Wi-Fi is more convenient than fooling with a USB cable. Hopefully, it won't have anything against working on the Nexus 7.

Thanks, I haven't seen that one before.

As to the card read from Amazon, if I had games or movies on an sd card the N7 should be able to play them from it? I'm not sure if I would ever need it. Just thinking about the future.

I have found usb transfer on my gnex to be a pain in the ass. I use airdroid to transfer over wifi. I like it better, no cables and easy to setup.

If you save the APKs on there then you should be able to run them. The only thing is I don't know where they end up installing to.

At the moment I'd hold off on purchasing any accessories for this.

So far the only two people I've seen test this out are Paul Obrien (the Modaco dev) and RMXO from XDA. Judging from his picture, Paul just hooked up a USB stick without external power. He said he could see the files, but couldn't open any of them. RMXO has reported the ability to transfer files to and from an sdcard, and open files on the sdcard (so long as they were placed on there from the tablet, not a PC), but that was done with a powered USB hub. He says he plans to test it without a powered hub in the next few days.

So yeah, I'd wait and make sure that you don't need to provide extra power before purchasing anything.

They'll just install in the same directory as any other app, because they won't actually be running off the external storage. Maybe you could hack in some form of apps2sd, but without that, it'll be the same as a market install and take up the same ammount of internal storage.

Thanks Xyro. I can wait.

Out of 16gb on my galaxy s2 with another 16gb sd card I'm only using about 4 gb and most of that is nandroid backups even with 130 apps.

I'm just anxious to buy something for my N7. :D

Buy some mini Android collectible figures!

Already done that.

j/k :D

But I would like to have the red one.

TAKE MY MONEY! But seriously, any idea where I can get that?

Apparently they are 'android mini collectibles series 01', according to google's reverse image search. Looks like they're sold by a few different places.

Those are indeed the Series 1 Android mini's! They are the hardest ones to find other than a select few such as the Schemer, Analytics one, and Mobley.
I have all of Series 2 minus the chocolate cupcake and the clear cyanogen mod one!
Series 3 comes out this month, and 2 more will be available at Comic Con this year!

You also have to be careful because the series 1 figures are often copied chinese knockoffs, which you can see for yourself at dealextreme.com.
I'm a huge collector of these, but I still need to get all of series 1 + the heroes and villains ones from last year's San Diego Comic Con, + the Chinese New Years ones. I've spent as much money on the mini collectible figures as I have on my Nexus 7's final price + the cover.

Nice! That explains the inconsistant results people have had with external storage.

I'm just glad to see this come around so quickly.

By the time we mortals have these things in hand, all the major issues will have been preemptively solved!

Yes! Nexus!

Man, it's looking worse and worse all the time for this Toshiba Excite I have on the way.

So to merge this with the case thread: When will someone make a case with a USB dock and a built in SD card slot :-).

This only works rooted so far, right? I'm new to Android.... does anyone think I will eventually be able to this on a stock N7?

Yes, it is rooted only, unfortunately :(
