Root What do I need to download?

Jwillvin

Lurker
Hi,

I got my phone about a year ago and then rooted it following the instructions found in this forum (thanks!) I basically rooted it only to get rid of the sprint stuff and in order to tether for free. I've been reading and reading trying to figure out how I can get the ota updates without having to unroot. I'm not sure what rom I need to download. Do I also need to download a new kernel to go along with it? Trying to figure it out on my own but I only come away more confused and I don't want to brick my phone so I figured I'll ask here, rather be safe than sorry.

Current software
Android version 2.3.3
Baseband version 2.15.00.0808
Kernel version 2.6.35.10-g13578ee
htc kernel@and18-2 #1
Build number 4.53.651.1 cl133994 release-keys
Software number 4.53.651.1
PRI Version 2.15_003
PRL Version 60687

Thanks guys

What recovery are you on? If you aren't on Amon ra (you can check by rebooting into recovery) it is highly suggested that you switch to it.

Directions for switching to Amon Ra:
1.download the file here
2.rename the file by erasing the "_RA_2.3" part of the name so that it is only named PC36IMG. make sure not to add ".zip" to the name as windows hides extensions.
3.transfer the file to the root (that means not in any folder) of the sd card.
4.power off (you most likely need to uncheck fastboot. settings/apps/uncheck fastboot.) then press and hold power+vol down.
5.hboot should see the file and select yes to update.
6.select no to reboot because we want to go into recovery and make a nandroid backup.
7.select recovery.
8.select backup and restore and select backup
9. select the first three and wimax. the other partitions do not need to be backed up. always keep one nandroid backup with wimax keys backed up on your computer.
10.now you can reboot.
11.using a file manager of some sort or even through your computer via usb, you should rename or delete the PC36IMG file on your card. otherwise you will be asked to update every time you go to the hboot screen. you do not need that file any more.

Directions for flashing a ROM:
1.first you need the vr superwipe:ZZZVR_SUPERWIPE.zip. download it and put it on your card. (optional)*
2.download the rom of your choice and transfer it to your card.
3.go into recovery
4.make a nandroid backup (if you didnt already do this above)
5.select wipe from the main menu and wipe dalvik cache, cache, and data
6.select install (or flash depending on which recovery you have) zip from sdcard
7.find the superwipe file and flash it.(optional)
8.find your rom and flash it.
9.reboot.

Technically, the latest OTA is 5.07 ;). But there are only two ROMs I know of based on it.

Shhh :p

To the OP, yes, there is a newer OTA than the one I linked you, but the best ROMS at the moment are on 4.67 (and theres not many important differences between the two OTA's).

WOW! Thank you guys so much!! That was super easy because of the steps you listed. Looks way better and seems like I have a different phone in my hand. Out of curiosity what the hell else is out there? I've barely got a taste and I'm hooked! Thank you guys for making it a very easy process so that even people like me who are not so tech savy can do it!!!

I personally would try MikG v3.11 first...very nice, smooth rom. I ran that rom after I rooted for a while....use the "Full Wipe" version.:)
MikG v3.11 [3/9/2012]
Flashing instructions here:
Can we flash over the old ROM? --Post 3, skip step 4.

Or another rom I currently am running is Decks Reloaded (see my sig for link)
It's not a sense rom, It's aosp. I'm loving it so far:)
Just read carefully in the o.p.'s of the roms for info and flashing instructions.
Any questions just ask if you do not quite understand...better safe than sorry when messing with your phone eh?:p

I went with the amon ra recovery and the tommys evo classic as suggested and am loving it so far. I will definitely check out some of the other roms as well in the near future. For now though I'm going to read up on the differences between the more popular ones out there. Thanks again guys!

Awesome, glad it worked for ya.!:)

The Galaxy SIII port from Team DIRT is pretty good. I have been running it for the last couple of days. I think that the regular CM9 Team DIRT v1.7 is the smoothest ICS Rom out there, but the SIII port has some cool stuff including S-Voice. More of a novelty though honestly. I don't think I would ever use it with any kind of regularity.
