Root What do the 2.2 ROMs get you?

Well... hard to say what happened. I know for a fact those scripts don't place shortcuts on the user's home pages (I ought to know, as I'm the one that wrote them, and they don't do anything near that clever ;) ), and I also tried to get Gscript Lite to do something like that (drop a shortcut) but failed. Maybe you were using the paid version of Gscript? Dunno - I'm mystified.

No worries, though - you are rooted now. Let's agree to never speak of this again :D

My brother is a programmer and a good friend teaches programming at college level. Seems to me they're often stumped by things that happen to me with computers. They scratch their heads and mutter a lot but I never look back...

:)

if this is the case, give xtrSense a try if you dont mind being 2.1
[ROM][GPL][11/5/2010] xtrSENSE4.6.5 [cache2cache,apps2sd,oc,jit]-HTC Sense - xda-developers
its fast, smooth, stable, and has a very stock feel.

I installed xtrsense last night to try it out. You're right, it certainly does have a stock feel. In fact I can't figure out what's different about it. Is there a list of features that are added/changed/deleted in xtrsense?

if youre feeling frisky and want to play with 2.2 sense, try tenzo
[ROM][BETA]Tenzo2.2.1 - Froyo-Sense, Cache2Cache, Wifi, GPS, CFSv8[11-21-10] - xda-developers

the bug list is pretty short, with camera being the biggest item.i ran it for a whole day it was smooth and stable for me. it may not be "daily driver" status yet,but its neat to play with :)

glad you got it figured out and are now rooted

I might like to try 2.2 at some point but I'll wait til they are up to "daily driver" status. I don't use the camera a lot but do like it for occasional use. The other day I was walking along the harbor and looked down to see an otter about 30' away just about posing for a pic. It would've made a great pic even with a mediocre camera. Of course I didn't have my phone w/me but I usually do and that's the kind of moment when I usually appreciate a camera phone.

Thanks very much to all of you who contributed to minimizing my learning curve!

Another question...
I'm looking thru some of the battery saving tips and one is to toss the HTC weather widget. when I look it up under manage applications there's no option to delete and even the option to "force stop" is greyed out.

What i want is to kill the whole weather info. I like (and my aging eyes need) the big clock but I feel the weather is using data, taking up screen space and has that cloud animation everytime I unlock the screen.
I just call a local number if I want to know what the weather is going to be. Can I get rid of this even if I have to download another clock?

I'm also having a devil of a time keeping a wifi connection going. I can barely download a small app thru market before it loses the connection and most often can't find it when I retry, retry, retry, retry...
Could be my router but I've tried switching router channels and it doesn't seem to make a difference. The wifi connection is very healthy as the router is right on my desk where I'm sitting. Trying to look up this problem, I gather it's a common problem with the Eris?

Thanks

The very long first post at the xda-developer's thread, as well as the changelog, detail most of it. Basically, it is stock Eris as of July's update, with root (so you can uninstall stock apps, if you wish, as well as the other things root access gives you), wired and wireless tether apps pre-installed, themed a bit (with that greenish color), overclocked/underclocked at 710 MHz to 245 MHz (by default), and a feature called cache2cache, where the data cache folder used by your apps moved to the /cache folder used by Dalvik cache, which gives you an enormous amount of available storage for user apps and data. It also adds the Gscript app with a series of pre-written scripts that let you do things like change the overclocking settings, remove some of thre pre-installed Sense apps (Peep, Footprints), and change some other parameters. Again, all that is detailed in the xda-developers thread.

I'm not running xtrSENSE or stock right now, but I believe that if you tap the weather info on that widget it opens the weather information, and from there you can change the timing of how often it updates. If you are trying to avoid data charges, you probably want that set to manual or never. You may have to press menu to get to the settings.

Actually, now that I think of it, there is in (from home) settings->accounts & sync a listing for the weather syncing - I think that you can also just uncheck it from there?

Oh, and my favorite "other clock" widget is Digital Clock Widget by Maize. http://www.appbrain.com/app/digital-clock-widget/com.maize.digitalClock

It looks just like the iPhone/iPod Touch lockscreen clock - it looks so much better than that crappy font Android uses by default. And this widget is just a clock.

I'm also having a devil of a time keeping a wifi connection going. I can barely download a small app thru market before it loses the connection and most often can't find it when I retry, retry, retry, retry...

Right, there is a guy in another thread with a Zoom ADSL router that is having issues. I have to say that I use my Eris with Apple routers, Netgear routers, Linksys routers, all without any issue.

On thing definitely to try is to set the wireless settings on the router to 802.11g, as the Eris does not have an N radio and I've read that some routers set to mixed-mode b/g/n have issues with the Eris.

But, which router model do you have? - let's start with that.

I looked at that and admittedly most of it is over my head (as is a lot of what you said here).
Then too, some of it doesn't seem true for me? When I go into "manage applications" and look up Peep for instance, there's no delete option and even the "force stop" button is greyed out. Am I supposed to delete apps from somewhere else?
I'll look at the xda thread when I have more time.

Good tip there. I've trashed the htc clock/weather and installed the Maize clock. Much better.

It's a Belkin Wireless G plus mimo fsd9230-4 (if you really want the model#)

Thanks, be back later.

Right, there is a Gscript for that. Start Gscript, menu->load file, and there should be one called something like remove_peep.sh. Run that script just like you ran the rooting process (except, in this case, you need that check box "Need SU?" checked.)

Overclocked/underclocked: The Eris, when running stock software, runs the CPU at 528 MHz. Using some clever tricks, the actual CPU speed can be set to be as slow as 19.2 MHz and as high as somewhere over 800 MHz. For most Erises, 710 MHz is a stable maximum speed - the phone will continue to run without having the CPU stop running from overheating.

Most rooted ROMs, including xtrSENSE, run the CPU in a series of stepped speeds from as low as 245 MHz (when your phone is idle, doing nothing, and particularly when the display is turned off) and, as processor demand increases - as you do more with your phone - the speed will step up to as high as 710 MHz. This makes the phone both feel faster when you use it, and burn less power when it is sitting idle, as the slower clock speeds draw less voltage from the battery.

One other thing that I noticed about xtrSENSE in the change log is that the Amazon MP3 store is removed by default, since it is available in the market if you really want it.

I think I explained the cache2cache as well as I could. Basically, as your apps run, their code and data are cached in special files that run faster than interpreting the code as the application runs, and these caches are moved to a different location in your phone in xtrSENSE, leaving the space for applications and their data far larger.

Wired and wireless tethering apps should be well understood - basically, they let you share your 3G data with a computer connected by cable, or connected by WiFi, if you are out and about with a computer with no other WiFi data source. You, of course, have absolutely little interest in this feature, if you have a severely limited data plan with PagePlus. Verizon Wireless customers with unlimited data plans may be more interested in that feature, though.

While this is true, I think the major issue for Localhero (I like that name, by the way; one of my favorite movies of all time) is the voice dialer that works well on Sense 2.2 on the Incredible but not on Eris 2.1 stock.
doh! :o thats a good point... dint click with me that he needs sense and 2.2 to potentially get it to work right!

I might like to try 2.2 at some point but I'll wait til they are up to "daily driver" status. I don't use the camera a lot but do like it for occasional use. im with you there... thats why i only played with it for a day or so. i dont use my camera all the time, but when i do i want it to work for those candid moments!

i dont have any trouble at all with mine. i have dsl... 2wire router from AT&T

i had a similar prollem with blue tooth once... cant remember which rom i was on,but when id try and activate it from the power bar or the menu it would try to connect, then shut off. a reboot fixed it... might give that a try if you havent. sometimes its the simple things :)

Funny, I never knew of the movie but having read this I picked it up at the library today but my GF and I didn't have time to watch it tonight.

Someone gave me that name when I saved a dog at the dog park.

Good explanations, thanks. Most of this stuff is stuff I don't need to think about and that suits me fine. You're right, I not only wouldn't expect to use tethering, but it's actually against the Page Plus "rules".

I am wondering about how to best handle apps though. I had downloaded Google Sky and then realized I had to download it again when I'd changed roms. Is there a way to save the equivalent of an exe file so I could just install it without downloading it again? (Though I guess that wouldn't be such a hassle if my wifi connection worked better)

I think it's my router. I didn't have the same disconnect issues at my GF's house. :(

It's also against Verizon's rules, which is why I don't do it, but plenty of others ignore it.

There is an app called Titanium Backup that allows you to back up your apps and their data to you SD card, and they can be restored onto a new ROM. It also reestablishes the market links, so any updates to the apps that appear in the market will be available to you.

Usually (not always, but usually) the problem can be resolved by simplifying the behaviors that the router engages in, and then the problem will disappear.

Think of it this way: there is a published specification for the behaviors of various wireless protocols (IEEE 802.xyz) that both the WiFi router and the phone need to conform to, and there are different folks who write the software on the router versus software on the phone. Occasionally one side or the other, (or even both of them!) will make a mistake in their implementation(s), and what do you know: a software bug.

So, the fewer behaviors either side engages in, the less opportunity there is for either of the two devices to get tripped up by a bug. In the case of the phone, there is not really much you can configure (from the menus, anyway) - so that only leaves the router to diddle with.

As someone previously mentioned, things that have tripped up people in the past are things like multi-mode switching (A/B/G/N) on the router, or channel-hopping on the router, or possibly turning off beacons.

Try simplifying the router's behavior: for instance, set it to "B only" or "G only", and see if that changes the problem. (Most people only use their routers to connect to the Internet, which is typically much slower than even Wireless-G speeds; unless you have a super-fast optical feed (> 50 mbps) to your ISP, the only time WiFi-N makes a bit of difference is if you are streaming video between devices in your home LAN via a WiFi connection)

I tried this and it seemed to help...maybe... I didn't get all that much time with it this eve. It still did lose connection too often but maybe less than before. When I tried to first connect it took a long time and multiple tries but eventually it did.
My router only does B & G. I switched it to G only.

Thanks. The thing I probably want most in the Voice dialer that I only saw so far in the rep's Incredible, is the ability to make the call with only one touch of the phone. The rest of the actions happen thru voice. I'm not as worried about data usage since talking with the rep (yes I'm aware that ymmv applies)

I was just looking for info on how to easily root my phone to 2.2. When I read your list above I see a multi-step learning curve:

- copy CELB and the Google apps package to the SD card
I'm a bit lost already..where do I get Celeb and the google apps package. I haven't tried to access the card yet but I guess I can figure out how.

- restart in Recovery
Um, maybe the manual describes this.

- Nandroid backup what you are running now, in case you want to go back
I've heard of Nandroid but not sure what it is yet. Backup app?

- go to the Wipe menu and Wip data/factory reset and Wipe Dalvik cache
Huh?

- flash CELB
Have to read about this...

- flash Google apps
Have to read about this too...

- restart the phone
That I can do!

I'm not posting this to ask you to hold my hand thru each step but just to show you where my level of understanding is. I will ask if you can direct me to easy to follow instructions or maybe even a link to a "one-click-root" trick I've heard about. I was just looking at a utube vid using something called Z4Root. Are one click roots for real? Safe? Do they do the pre-root backup too?

Thanks,
John

Are you rooted yet? Z4 root is not for the Eris. I used the dummies method to root. It's so easy a Plumber can do it.:D These guys have explained it to death. Choose a Rom you want to try and download it to your computer then hook up your phone and mount it as a usb/harddrive. Drag and drop it( the zip ) to the removeable disk( your phone). Choose which method to root with. Once rooted you have options, select Nand/Backup Restore, then select Nand Backup, Once completed select Wipe, then select Wipe/ FactoryData, once completed select Flash Zip from SD Card, select the zip file of the rom you choose, when its done reboot, you have a new rom. Sorry I can't explain in detail like these other guys can but thats pretty much it in a nut shell.:)

Edit: whoops i didn't see how far up the thread this quote was. my bad. that's what i get for just skimming over stuff.
