How where you able to use the custom image on sms unread, I can find the option in gmail unread but not the sms one.

there is a folder in /data, connect to your pc, you will see it

Text clock at the top is Clockr. Two others worth trying to see if you like them would be Tajm and SiMi clock.

I'm trying to do that but I can't get it to work. I'm using adw launcher to resize the widgets is that why?

You have to use launcherpro plus. only LPP lets you overlap widgets.
