Help What does my Kernel version mean?

Member
Just took delivery of my unlocked S2 two days ago. I purchased it on ebay. It's working perfectly. However, I am confused with the phone info, especially the Kernel version.

What does it mean?

Is it a UK phone?

Has it been rooted?

I have tried to find the answers on this forum, without success. The actual Kernel version is:-

Kernel version:-
2.6.35.7-I9100BUKG2-CL342890root@DELL102#2

Other phone info that may help is:-

Android version:-
2.3.3
Baseband version:-
I9100BUKG1
Build number:-
GINGERBREAD.BUKG2

Thanks in anticipation.
Regards

Hi Geoff!

2.6.35.7-I9100BUKG2-CL342890root@DELL102#2

2.6.35.7 is the Linux kernel version used
I9100 is the model designation
BU is the network code for Vodafone
KG2 indicates that it was compiled in 2011, in July, and was the second build of that month
CL342890root is the user account used on the system DELL102#2 to do the compilation.

Was the handset purchased from a Vodafone shop or reseller, as the firmware build number (BUKG2) also suggests it's a Vodafone version?

Well its not rooted. All stock kernels have root@dell in their name. I think the BU bit is specif to a uk/europe branded vodafone device, although I could be wrong there. The KG2 defines the year and month of release of the kernel. So K is 2011, G is July, and 2 means its the second build that month.

Edit: Ninja'd again by Slug

I'm not an expert at knowing very much about these things, but... I believe the kernel is a central part of an operating system. The kernel manages the phone's resources, and is the interface between the application software and the phone hardware. Maybe someone with more knowledge in this area can explain in more define details.

Edit
There you go...Slug has explained it in more precise details. ;)

Thank you to Slug, Shotgun84, and Rush Lindsay. All my questions has been answered, and I am now happy that my phone is genuine.
For Slug, it was purchased from a reseller, and not direct from Vodaphone.
I am impressed with the speed of response and quality of the answers. Thanks again.
I will now try and close this thread.

Hello and welcome to Android Forums bskhanwale! :)

Your kernel version is stock for your firmware and as such has no bearing on updating.

If you wish to manually update to JB, then just follow the istructions and video in #1.7 of the http://androidforums.com/samsung-galaxy-s2-international/680070-jelly-bean-update-dummies-guide.html.
