Root What happened ??????

Okay, here's my story, hopefully someone can tell me what I did wrong. Bought a new SanDisk SD card 32 gb, class 6. Partitioned it using the Dummies Guide and all went well, flashed MikG 3.1 and then did a Titanium restore of all my apps and data. Everything seemed to be working fine at this point. I then played around a bit with Mik Tweaks before I realized this was tweaks from MikG 3.0 Everything still appeared to be working good, other than I forgot to back up my SMS files. So I figured I would put my original 8G SD card back in thephone, backup those files and then transfer them to the new SD card. So I put the old SD card in and reboooted the phone and got a blank screen. Turned phone off rebooted again, same results. Put the new SD card (32G) back in and had nothing again (started worrying now) Went back to the original 8G SD card did a nandroid backup and at least I have my phone back. Any suggestions on where I went wrong would be appreciated. Thanks guys.

Wanted to put this in the All Things Root Forum, hopefully someone can move this over there. Thanks.

Well, don't know if this would be an issue, seeing as tho the battery needs to be pulled in order to access the sd card but, did you unmount card first?
menu/settings/storage/sd card scroll down to "unmount sd card"
Can you use a micro sd card adapter and plug into computer and see files?

Edit: I cant move your thread but I think someone might

I did not unmount the sd card, just pulled the battery then pulled the card. I was able to check for files and there were some there, unfortunately I decided to start from scratch again and ended up reformatting the new sd card, now that I know I can always do a nandroid backup and be functional with my phone.

Hello, and Welcome to the Forums.

What I think happened is you flashed Mik onto the phone and it took advantage of that new partition you made.

It puts symlinks on the phone pointing it to locations on the card, in the partition you made, where it has placed the bulk of the apps in the rom.

When you rebooted THAT rom with a different card, the place those symlinks was pointing was no longer there. The rom didn't have access to all that stuff.

You could use some other program to save the mms files, put them onto your pc and then move them back after you put the New Partitioned card back in and reflash the rom like you did before.

Sorry about the update delay but pool pump problems got in the way, got MikG 3.11 working fine and was cruising the forum last night and saw a thread from Rxpert83 recommending the Anthrax Kernel for 3.11. Went threw the steps in Kernels for Dummies, and all went well till last step

Now the not so good part, when I reboot everything on my phone is rendered useless. The home screen comes up with the clock, wi-fi signal, signal strength and battery monitor on the mikmik background. The phone does ring when called but I am unable to answer it, or move past this page. None of my links to apps appear so basically I am looking at a blank slate. I have a nandroid backup so its not a big deal other than every time I reboot this happens.

One thing that I did notice in trying to figure this out is on my SD card it shows my FAT 32 file with (23.7) GB available which seems correct, but when I scroll down to a folder named removable disk which I assume is ext2 it shows:

Size - 2.26 GB
Size on Disk - 2.27 GB
Contains - 1,743 Files, 112 Folders

I set ext2 to 2GB when I formatted but it appears these numbers telling me that ext2 is filled up already?

Thanks in advance for all your help.

When you partitioned did you partition with an Ext-3?
And what are you in to get these size readings? Your computer? I dont think windows (if that's what you are using) will see Ext-3...
Perhaps if you do indeed have a ext-3, your symlinks are not there as dustwun said a few posts up.
Then we need to run some commands in Terminal Emulator...:)

These are the steps I used when I partitioned:
3.enter 32 for swap, and 1024 or 2048 for ext2, and do the rest for FAT
4.select upgrade ext2 to ext3
5.select usb-ms toggle and transfer your contents of your card on your computer back to the card.

I used 2048 for ext2, and yes I did select upgrade to ext3

I got those readings when I looked at my card using windows explorer.

Just ran the nandroid backup that I did prior to flashing the new kernel and I am looking at the same nothing I described when I rebooted my phone after flashing that kernel.

So, if your phone is still useless, even after restoring your backup, go back into recovery and wipe cache/dalvik and I would try the "fix uid mismatch" or the "fix permissions" in recovery. then reboot
--backtrack a minute, did you wipe cache/dalvik before flashing kernel?
A little late now but just asking...try my above suggestions

Okay, ran the apk fix uid mismatch then rebooted the phone, and no changes, still looking at a blank screen.

o.k..just let me verify things here so I know where you are at k?
-Before kernel flash: running mikg w/ 32gb card, ext-3 partitioned. no issues....
-After kernel flash....blank screen, some widgets, clock etc.
-You restored nand from backup...same thing.
-Wiped cache/dalvik/fix uid/reboot...same thing.
Correct?
Can you even pull up menu or is it the mik background and totally unresposive?

Yes, everything written above is correct.

No menu, just mik background, no links to apps, and cannot do anything with this screen, need to pull battery to shut phone down

wow....well, someone who knows more that I do may come in here and offer some other advice, but I would have to say, put Mikg back on card (via computer), and reflash mik....
Just a quick question, when you restored from nand backup, did you wipe everything except sd card?
If not, I would try that, but first put a copy of the mik rom on card, in case nand is bad.

Hey Mike, thanks for all your help, I really do appreciate it, when I restored mybackup nand I did not wipe everything minus the sd card, will give that a try and see what happens. Thanks again.

cool, please let me/us know...it will educate me and other people will know your issue/fix:)

No problem, will let u know how things turn out, just tried wiping everything minus the sd card but still the same results.:confused:
I think it's time for a reflash...seems your nand backup was bad, and it happens, tho not very often.:(
If you have mikg on card then I would reflash the rom...
I really can't say what went wrong when you flashed the kernel and then nothing else we/you did helped.

Thought I would give you a quick update on what has transpired. I reformatted my sd card and then loaded MikG, superwipe and the anthrax kernel. Then went threw all the steps for wiping, flashing etc... After that everything has worked great, it appears the conflict arises when I transferred the full contents of the sd card that I copied to my computer previously. When it was transferred yesterday I mentioned the folder called removable disk, that is no longer a folder in my current configuration and my belief is that is where the problem was. I'm sure your reading this and scratching your head, but if you could see the actual contents of that card with the removable disk folder if might be easier to understand.

Anyhow, it has been clear sailing since, so I am loading my apps manually (not a big deal) and transferring some pics and music the same way. After that I will do a TB and nan backup then hopefully be in the clear.

Thanks again for all your help, its greatly appreciated.
