What has eight legs and is awesome?

There are so many awesome looking tarantulas. I want to get over my fear of spiders so I can buy this one.

SALE -

Those are my favorite. I love versis. I have like... five of them.

I know the breeder you linked to, she's a nice lady. If you ever decide to order, you can't go wrong buying from her. Or me. I'm not half bad. ;)

I know how you feel, though. I used to be TERRIFIED of spiders.

That's awesome, I have been looking at tarantulas for the last half hour now. I had no idea how many breeds there actually were.

Have you ever been bitten? From what I have read most tarantulas aren't very aggressive and work really well as pets.

Technically, they're considered either docile or defensive. Spiders don't actively (generally) seek you out and try to rough you up, so it's not fair to call them aggressive.

I have been bitten twice, and it was my own damn fault both times, lol. I spooked 'em both times. I try to be careful, but you know how life is.. :P

Nothing significant, just a little tingling and pain. Lasted a day or two.

I have had a couple escapees that required me to dismantle my bed to find them... little buggers. Always caught 'em, though.

Here's a tarantula having a fit:

Wow that one is pissed off. Lol. So after talking to my fiancee about it for a while, I talked her in to letting me get one. (And I was actually able to get her interested as well.)

I have pretty much spent my whole day researching, I am really interested in getting an avicularia visicolor, and she really wants to get an avicularia purpurea. They are so fascinating. :)

Since you seem extremely knowledgable when it comes to tarantulas, do you have any tips? Or good guides to read? From what I've read these species are very good for beginners.

Man, you are soooooooo screwed.

Your life will be over before it starts. It starts with your woman not letting you own a spider. Then before you know it, you must sell the Harley, the banjo, stop drinking, avoiding rock and roll and bluegrass music. No more Super Bowl party, no more dating other women. Quite soon, you will be her Yes Man and you will end up buying woman's personal care products on isle 3B where real men fear to tread.

Defy her and grunt. Stake your claim and purchase that spider. Man up before you end up having to Google "Man" to recall what you once were. Get that spider and put your foot down before it is too late. Hell, when she complains, get two. Dump her now before you become a gal about town and she becomes your mother.

Say Yes to spiders, dag nabbit!

Woohoo! Glad to see you've decided to take the plunge.

The best thing to do is to start with a hardy species. Avicularia aren't known for being hardy when they're little bitty, but they're much easier to keep at 3"+. So if you decide to start with that species, I'd suggest finding one at least that size. Obviously, females will live longer than males; but finding a female that size is going to cost a little more. But keep in mind, it's an investment that lasts a few years, and they're VERY cheap to maintain. You can get away with feeding them once a month, if you so choose. I try to feed every other week or so (if they'll eat). You can easily pick up just a couple crickets every other week for less than a buck. Great deal, right? :D

You don't have to give them any special kind of water - tap water will do.

I'm sure you can get in touch with me and I can hook you up with a reputed seller - you can easily order a spider through the mail. They require very little oxygen, so shipping them is no big deal if the shipper is experienced.

As for substrate and enclosure, you can PM me if you like and I can go into further detail. :)

Might as well grab em from the outside if you gotta touch em anyway right?! ;)

The problem with that is that you do not know where the crickets/other bugs you catch have been. Have they been in contact with pesticides or other diseases? Nobody knows!

That's why it's safest to just purchase feeders.

My headlights once shown on a tarantula as I was driving home to my wife. I stopped and scooped it into my glovebox (with a magazine or something as they scare me a little) thinking I'de scare my wife by having her get something from the glovebox for me. In the meantime I had forgotten it was in there and carelessly got visine to get the red out before I got home. When I got home, and under the street light in my driveway, I'll be damned if that big, hairy critter wasn't hanging from my steering wheel by one or two legs poised to land in my lap! I screamed like a little girl! Then I showed it to my wife before scooping the little monster out. How can something be so pretty and so scary at the same time?

YOU'RE CRAZY LADY!!

I just happened to come across this thread and wanted to say thanks for the info. And the awesome pics. I have a fear/fascination of them too. I love looking at them when others have them - but don't think I could ever own one myself.
