Root What is safe to delete?

Hi,
I am getting ready to root for the first time and would like to get rid of some of the programs on my eris that I don't use that came with the phone. I understand that deleting some of these might cause some problems and was wondering which ones were safe to get rid of. I would like to delete Facebook, Footprints, Gmail, Amazon MP3 store, Peep, Stocks, Talk, Teeter, Visual Voicemail, and Youtube. Thanks for all the help in advance!!!

Somewhere around here there is a list of apps that are safe to delete - browse around this forum. Of your list, off the top of my head, the only one I would not delete is Talk, as I believe the market uses some Talk somehow to attach to your Google account. (Well, I'd also keep gmail, but that's because I use it so heavily.)

Get Titanium Backup from the market and use the "freeze" feature to disable those apps (without deleting them.) If things go fine after a few days, you can use Titanium to then uninstall them.

Thank you sooo much, that thread is what I was looking for but couldn't find. Just did the 1 click root, going well so far. While I am typing does anyone have any recommendations for overclocking apps?

Sorry, got busy with publishing an app to the Market...

There's always setCPU and the Overclock Widget (I'm only familiar with setCPU and have only used the Overclock Widget briefly).

You might be able to use a pre-overclocked ROM (usually set to a usually safe/stable 710MHz) or one that does not require overclocking (i.e., its usually snappy enough that it does not need a boost).

Additionally, some custom ROMs support the use of Gscript scripts to control the overclocking and/or use different kernels that use different scheduling algorithms.

Your best bet is to read-up on the various ROM threads over on XDA (Droid Eris Android Development - xda-developers) and see what the dev and various users say and suggest about the various overclocking options.

Sorry, not a definitive answer, but I hope it helps!

Cheers!

If you are not planning to flash I custom ROM and just be rooted in place, I believe you need a to flash a new kernel that allows overclocking. I've always just used a custom ROM that is already overclocked, so I don't know this for sure, but I think I remember reading something about this when I was looking into rooting.

+1 / yes! Good catch, metlcat!

I have advised some folks in the past that if they don't want to lose their current setup (apps, settings, etc.) after rooting (i.e., installing the custom recovery and flashing the rootme.zip (or engtools3.zip)), that you can be rooted on the current 2.1 OTA kernel but have limited root capabilities (i.e., using root-only apps).

You cannot overclock the stock Android kernel and would need to flash Zanfur's overclock patch/kernel over top of it.

All that being said, I think the few folks that have done this have gone on to flash a custom, rooted ROM anyway ;).

Cheers!

He guys, thanks for all the help, I really appreciate it!!! Yeah I started reading over on xda about an overclocking patch that needs to be in place, and decided not to mess with it until I get a little more familiar with the whole rooting experience. As it stands right now I have been keeping my phone super clean and not full of junk, and so far the speed is just fine with me, so I think I am gonna hold off on the overclocking for the moment.
