After some Googling I'm not sure that is something you want to install. I can't really find anything concrete but I'm not sure that it's an official update for the device.

Can you pull down the notification shade, longpress the notification and then hit the little "i" button to see what app is causing this notification?

If that's not some legitimate Samsung update, those app permissions would be very concerning.

I'm pretty sure I got this on my Edge using Samsung Smart Switch when I connected the phone to my PC. Perhaps the OP could try this route as it would then appear to be official.

It appears to be a Samsung firmware update, based on the fact that the named processes in #8 & #9 are proprietary to them.

If "allow unknown sources" is disabled in Settings/Security and the "Verify apps" options are enabled in Settings/Google/Security then you've little to worry about. To put your mind at rest though it's probably worth checking with other users in the Galaxy S4 sub-forum.

That's what is in the dropbox link, I jsut tried it and it opened up for me while I wasn't logged on, it sometimes takes a little while to populate.

If so why not put Samsung firmware update in big letters somewhere and why no info on Google? we're inundated with viruses everywhere these days, bad procedures I reckon.

that to me spells hacker.... throw it away.

Go to about phone>software updates >and click on update now. If it's a legit update, it's going to ask you if you really want to update. If the update notification you received isn't legit from Samsung, you'll get a no update available message.

You're looking at the wrong place. Go back to home screen, press settings, then look for the entry labeled 'about phone'. It's usually the last entry under general.

What I get is about device on the S4, went in there tapped update now and it popped up the update mentioned in my OP, but it does not ask me if I want to update, I did turn off auto update to prevent this happening again.

I have not installed it yet.

If it popped up via that method, then you can install it without worry. That's official Samsung software. Whatever concern about it's permission or capabilities or access to data you have can be ignored, because the currently installed software already has those permissions and capabilities and access to your files. It won't change any privacy concerns anyway.

Thanks ChanChan we got there at last it is now installed and the phone hasn't died.

But would it not have been better to have had a title, to have had some info us plebs could understand and not have had to have a thread to figure it out.

Not really sure about that. It wasn't a big deal until lately where we get lots of fake notifications from ads trying to get us to install things. Before, when something like that comes up, we know it's legit.
