what keyboards are u guys using?

I like swype in portrait, but it blows in landscape. Tried the keyboard manager hack to have swype in portrait and a non trace type keyboard in landscape, but it's too unstable. Finally tried Ultra and with a bit of configuration, I have the best of both worlds.
 
Trying swift key for the last few days and i'm liking it so far.When my trial date is up i will try the ultra keyboard, seem to have a lot going on from what i have seen so far.
 
Since most of the topics on here are the sameones I decided to post about MessageEase. MessageEase is a keyboard that gets you to use one hand and one finger to type. I personally like MessageEase more than 8pen because it is a smaller learning curve. Let me know what you guys think. I use this keyboard more than Swype because Swype always stores words that I never saved.
 
Ultra keyboard. has swype style built in if you want to use it among 1000 other options. tried a lot of different ones before i settled on this.

i am using the better keyboard. I want to try someothers, but i am thinking twice about swype as swyping seems to be illegal as it means stealing in the dictionary.

It's a total drag that so many people want this, but can't get it - from the Swype beta FAQ:

How can I buy Swype? / When will Swype be on the Android market?
We have considered a direct-download sales model, but there are two challenges to that approach:
  1. Customer Support. Providing Swype users with the level of professional support they deserve is a priority for us. We're still a small (but quickly growing!) company, and we don't have the resources necessary to support a full end-user sales model. It is much more efficent for us to focus on improving Swype and to partner with large organizations like Samsung and T-Mobile who already have customer support structures in place.
  2. Device integration. Swype isn't just an app; it's a keyboard - the most widely used piece of software on a device. It interacts with nearly every single application on the phone. As such, it's more like a system component than an application. For each device release we do a tremendous amount of testing and we *always* find issues due to the varying components - the OS version, the device hardware, the OEM UI implementation, etc. In addition, some features can't be implemented without an OEM's engineering assistance. We end up doing a large amount of work on each device to be sure that you have a great experience entering text using Swype.

So, we appreciate your enthusiasm, but we are not ready to do direct-downloads at this time.

LOL... I've never tried installing a different keyboard before, and just went to install MessagEase. I laugh because I'm wondering if the pop up message you get when you enable it, is the same for every other keyboard you install FROM THE MARKET? The message being:
! Attention:This input method may e able to collect all the text you type, including personal data like passwords and credit card numbers. It comes from the application MessagEase. Use this input method?

I'm finding this a bit alarming because while I understand that Google is simply trying to keep their users aware/alert, it also makes you question their methodology in terms of how apps are screened for security and how thorough of a screening any apps go through? Or is this not a standard alert? And if it IS a standard alert, why would they even permit the thought of such a thing to occur from within the Android Market?

Does anybody see where I'm coming from here ? I don't want to have to install yet more third party apps, or go deep into the system in order to monitor every app I use just to screen what it's doing with my data. IMO, most apps shouldn't be able to harvest info/data such as that which is supposed to be secure such as CC or bank account info. I personally don't do banking online, but if passwords are collected THAT easily... I'm not going to be an Android user for that much longer.

Call me paranoid, but I think it's a legit concern.. no?

Unfortunately the hidden errors pop up with Swype has made it largely unusable for me. Back to ShapeWriter which is pretty solid!

You can say that again with feelings (BUMMER!!!) :)

What I don't understand is why not just let the app for the Evo be available w/o support nor consequences to the company (e.g. use at your own risk) and make the users word of mouth advertisers in exchange of using it till until their infrastructure is in place to deal with the support they need to charge an arm and a leg for?

Good questions - probably all about the Benjamins.

I think that thanks to litigation a few years ago, you can't actually market some products without liability to the company. This might be shaping their approach - can't say.

Or - maybe - they're getting huge money selling to a few manufacturers as a product differentiator - why sell to millions when you can reach millions selling to a handful? Again - dolla dolla bill, y'all.

Of course - these are opinions not facts.

It's a legitimate concern, yes.

Some app devs are lazy, some are evil, and some have good reasons for what they do that aren't evil.

The way those security/permission alerts work is like this:

Google's already provided all sort of services (software components within Android) - and devs include those classes of things in their code. So the app really can't get out of its little sandbox without passing through these known services.

Google can't - or doesn't - keep track of all the services that might be righteous for any given app so they do the next best thing: they see what's being tapped for access by the app at install time - and then let you make the choice.

That's pretty good news.

The pretty bad news is the pain in the neck we all get trying to decide what's implied by these permission warnings with respect to the app selected.

Like you, many of us REALLY want this improved for our protection.
 
Well ok, I found an apk for Swype and decided to try it out. I went into Language and Keyboard settings and selected Swype and then went through the settings for it. After that, it still doesn't work. What did I miss? Do I have to reboot the phone?

Edit: Never mind. I figured out that you have to long press on the text box initially to choose the input method. Yeah... I Google'd.
 
Anyone know where I can get a working swype.apk ?????????????

I tried all the top results google returned and they all force close or I cant successfully install them...

Sorry - because that's a closed beta, anyone answering this will have it taken down - it's a matter of copyright infringement and our forums can have no part in it.
