I hoped to find a review of launchers somewhere, but haven't found any that aren't in a phone-specific forum.

Anyone mind saying what launcher you prefer (or hate) and why?

I use LauncherPro Plus.
I don't know if it has anything that others don't.
But I like the built in widgets it has (Calendar, Messaging, Gmail, Facebook)
Love the looks of the LPP widgets.
It also lets you resize widgets to any size you want, overlapping widgets if needed.
You can also customize your dock, dock icons, and dock background.

Again, I don't know if these features are exclusive to LPP, in fact I doubt they are, it's just what I've always used since my Ally.

I use Launcher Pro Plus, and used it since D1. I do like the eye candy of GO launcher EX especially with blackglass. you can use multiple launchers so you can play around with them.

Gotta recommend GO Launcher EX, free from market. Under the launcher's preferences > advanced settings I keep "System persistent" and "Prevent force close" both CHECKED to avoid home screen redraws.

I used Launcher Pro Plus on my D1, but it started to get laggy (never rooted). I switched to GO to see what it was like, and have stayed with it.

I enjoy both LauncherPro, and ADW Launcher. Both get you the same core functionality, scrollable widgets (seems to be more standard for all widgets supporting this, where LP has less widgets supporting its scrolling), adjustments in UI effects, increased app bar to 5, creating app menu folders to hide apps you dont care for or organizing them (similar to motorblue function). I use one for several months then get bored and swap over to the other just to change things up a little. I do like the fact that ADW Launcher gives you swipe up and down functions. You can set a swipe up to pull a secondary app bar with your most used apps.

Both let you set system persistent, and both you can tweak the effects to be faster so you "feel" like your getting things done faster.

Either way you wont go wrong with ADW or LP, they are both great.

I had been using ADW for a long time and think it's great but I've switched to GO Launcher EX. I like being able to create sub-folders in the drawer and it seems to have more active development and updates. They are both good launchers though.

hi guys,

took me ages to find a current launcher thread :D

ive been using ADW EX for months now and is great imo - nice and smooth, good functionality - i like having a faves folder in the dockbar :)

used to use Go a while back but was having some issues with it around the time they moved to ex build (desire 2.2)

i think adw dev is working on new build so no updates for a while - so have been looking around for something else to play with - but not been tempted yet ;)

cheers
dan

Launcher Pro. I like it for it's speed and the Cube transition effect. I also like their built in icons.

I'd ADW is just as good, but it's just different. ADW has different customization options that I didn't use. I just prefer the options that Launcher Pro has.

I find the stock launcher is very good because of the ability to create application groups in the app drawer. So far I have created nine groups.

I ran Launcher Pro + on the D1 because I could create enough screens to segregate my apps into groups. Even then I had to make small icons to fit the largest group and combine small groups on a couple home screens.

The stock launcher comes with 5 home screens and I really only need two or three for the widgets, but I don't see any way to control the number.

Great platform out of the box for Motorola. Much better than the first time.

+1

I use launcher pro.

For those talking about separating apps.. 1st of android has FOLDERS that you can name and use and fill with whatever and place anywhere on desktop.

2nd.. launcher pro you can add shortcuts to dock or homescreens. One of the shortcuts can be to APP GROUPS, which is actualy the groups you created from the stock motoblur groups. This is what i did, and I replaced the default app launcher with my filtered app group I made previously.. my alternative to the hide feature LPP provides.

I may have to try that approach. At least with Launcher Pro I can control the number of home screens.

So much to play with, so little time...

I used Launcher Pro for awhile on my X until I tried a custom ROM that came with ADW. I used ADW for a bit then switched ROMs and figured it was time for something new. I then installed Go Launcher. I like it and everything but when Moto put out the GingerBlur it was great. Now I just stick with stock.

I currently have both launcher pro and go launcher installed, using home switcher for now to switch between them. Launcher pro seems significantly smoother on its home screen transitions. I prefer the widgets that launcher pro offers (full screen twitter widget). Go launcher on the other hand is much better in offering replacable themes, and easier to find. Go launcher offers a blur like experience by switching to landscape on homescreens when keyboard pops out. In launcher pro, when switching to landscape mode, for some reason it will zoom your wallpaper, distorting the picture. In the end, im going with launcher pro because of its smoother homescreen transitions.

Although I didn't find the need much to use Launcher Pro Activities on my rooted D1, I'm finding Activities really helpful with the D3. For example, I really liked the Landscape-oriented dialer with the built-in car doc app, but I prefer to use Car Dock Home v3. Using Activities, it was easy to set up the landscape stock dialer for use with CDH v3. Activities are also good for troubleshooting. If you haven't played around with Activities in Launch Pro, I highly recommend checking them out.

Thanks, HokieDroid. I'll check that out.

Go Launcher Ex. It contains most things the LPP people enjoy and I just find it doesn't lag as much on my phones as LP did. I also like the look of it a lot more.

I'm with beowulf. I'm new to android, and don't see a point to Launchers. What's the benefit? If I like the HTC Sense look/feel, should I try out a launcher?
I've got Beautiful Widgets on my droid3 right now, and it looks pretty nice.
