What platform is Android built on?

iOS

Is it one of the above?
Thanks.

ummm android was developed in response to apple's iphone at the time. so to answer your question........none of the above. android is owned by google and that is why you have to by apps from google's play store.

Yes Android is a Linux based system. Linux is based on Unix. To be fair Apple Products are also based on Unix. so technically both are Unix phones. :p

Android is a dalvik virtual machine running on top of a monolithic Linux kernel. iOS?! Oh, and FYI you can buy apps from any app store, unlike Apple, Google doesn't forcibly lock you into their ecosystem.

Wait why isn't Microsoft in this discussion? They did pretty much the same yet no one ever hates them these days! At one point folks sought out Apple because they hated Microsoft that much. My how times have changed

I hate M$ just as much as Apple

Apparently the lack of an open mind. Android fanboys are just as bad as Apple fanboys. I use all kinds. Apple, Android, even BlackBerry. I don't believe any one company is evil. Makes me wonder why android folks hate Apple for. Why are they feeling threatened? If someone doesn't choose Android over Apple they're automatically isheep. I find that insulting. So we're supposed to only use what you like? What a boring world that'd be. Personally I love variety. Maybe they're jealous. But Android is number one so why they're angry at Apple is beyond me. A company who is successful isn't evil, they're successful.

I agree I use anything Although I do enjoy android mainly because of the fact that whenever I plug my iPod into my computer it tries to install 10gb worth of games which I don't have selected for syncing onto it...I've never actually used a device running blackberry or any form of windows mobile

Personally, the only reason I don't like Apple is how they lock you into their system the way its configured that you need to have all Apple devices for it to work seamlessly. So far I'm using a Windows PC and 2 Android devices. Used to also use a Nokia in my car for Ovi Maps until Waze came along. They all worked seamlessly. Well the only trouble was syncing Google Tasks to Outlook but not a dealbreaker anyway. I want the options if I did not like the way stock worked.

actually the lack of an open mind is not true. I have used blackberry and loved it. as far as apple goes I have even recommended to some that they go that route instead of Android. Most of us don't like Apple for one there business practices (suing every one for everything) and two because of the proprietary nature of being locked in to their ecosystem.

Actually I do dislike apple, the new apple anyways. Under Tim cook there's not much innovation left to happen and apple's revenue will likely not see any gain in the future.

OH god... just for a quick lesson since everyone else has answered you properly. Apple does not really make anything, while they design and modify things they have not truly "made" anything. They use the same hardware as everyone else with a different look.
Unix has been around for years, and the sad part is the creator of Unix died a week or so after Steve Jobs, yet not one news station covered it. The man did more for the computer world than Steve Jobs could have ever, it is truly saddening that hardly anyone knew when he died. I know there were people in my office like myself that it was a sad day for when Dennis Ritchie died.

You'll find a lot of it is due to the smug attitude as well as ignorance of Apple fans. I'm not sure how jealousy had anything to do with it.

honestly, i see far more smug attitudes from 'fandroids' as they are termed. if you so much as see one article on ZDNet or such praising Apple for ANYTHING, the comments are chock full of folks shouting 'biased!!!' 'iSheep author!' 'You are being paid by Apple to say that!'

the attitude of Fandroids is far far worse. never have i seen any Apple person hate on anything. they may inaccurately claim Android fails at something based on their experience (all of five minutes) with some ancient version like 1.0 but that's it. they don't seem to fill comments on blogs or articles with outright hate.

ironically, NO one ever hates on Microsoft Windows Phone in any such blog or site. not that i can recall anyway.

what i just don't grasp is why Android people care. i mean, not only is Android #1 so far, and in so many ways far more functional, but Apple is pulling a Research in Motion, which i can see them being in the same spot a year or so from now. so first of all Android people have nothing to worry about. i mean if someone chooses iPhone over Android they are bullied or called iSheep or declared 'noobs' and their phone a 'toy useless for anything but Angry Birds'. it is such a condescending attitude it makes me sick. so they chose a device you don't like. why do YOU care? why does ANY Android fan care? i mean are people supposed to choose ONLY Android because it's #1? what happened to the freedom of a person to have the freedom to choose between more than one type of smartphone or tablet? why does Android always have to be the de-facto choice? i actually like being able to choose between three different platforms (or four if you honestly believe BlackBerry exists or is worth investing in these days), and often find myself using all of them because there is just no way each can do it all, and i get to learn the good and bad of both.
