What sms apps do you guys use?

GO SMS is new to the market, it is lightweight, fast, and had all the features of the other sms apps (theming, popup, ect...) Not to mention it looks A LOT better than any other sms app.

People, I am just curious... Why did you think that you need a SMS application? What '+'s do they bring?
And same goes for calling applications. What made you think 'Oh, this sucks, I have to change this'?

When I saw this thread, I felt I am a little weird because I don't use any SMS or calling applications and do stay with stock ones.

I like the quick reply pop up over the lock screen.

Well, this is something I could use. What else?

Look and feel - with Handcent, it's easy for me to follow longer threads (we do have those, work-related) because I get the other guy's text in bubbles from the left of the screen, mine from the right, with different bubble colors.

When tracking a conversation, it's just easier for me to see at glance who said what, when - compared to the stock app.

And frankly, on my particular phone model, the text is just clearer and easier to read - black lettering as opposed to white lettering - and my eyes aren't getting any younger.

Just add SMS Popup and that's all you need. ;)

Over and above what others have mentioned when I start typing a name in the To field, Handcent brings up only that person's mobile number, the stock was bringing up email as well and I was sending text to that by mistake quite a bit.

So, it seems worth to try one of them. I don't think they'll do any harm to me, or my sweet money. Actually, I noticed that I have a SMS widget, it seems it can show me the SMS without getting into an application.
But EarlyMon's message got me (maybe he's the programmer of the app :)) and I am downloading Handset now. I hope I enjoy...

Do we have a possiblity to erase the stock sms application and use one of those as a 'stock' sms app? You know, delete the original sms.apk, change the handset.apk to sms.apk and replace? Or something like that?

Since Verizon has a cheaper monthly rate without texting included (pay per text), I'm interested in alternatives that use the data connection for texting--apparently google voice does that. Has anyone tried Google Voice or other workarounds to avoid provider charges for texting? I know there are lots of instant message apps, but I want to be able to text someone when I only know their cell number, and they might not have a smartphone, etc.

LOL - no, AndroidForums is OK with app developers saying positive things about their products and offering support - when they identify themselves. If they spam or try to secretly push their products, I'm one of the guys that whacks them.

So, no, I have no affiliation in any way with any sms-related apps and I'm not an app developer for Android. ;)

Here's what you'll need to know to reign in your stock sms app -

Hancent FAQ - especially question "c" from the list, this will make Handcent your default sms, and you'll never hear from the stock app again.

Your phone's rom is big enough that you needn't worry about space taken by your stock sms app.

Theoretically, you could remove it by rooting your phone.

However - I'd advise against it, for the same reason that I recommend rooters to not remove stock apps - if a favored replacement app ever develops some deep defects that whack you, then your stock app is always there as a fallback.

I'm using GO SMS...lightweight and fast.
I'm using it now, I love it - the Christmas theme is cute! But it's not just cute, it's very functional. The developer is looking for suggestions, too. Thank you for pointing me towards it!

I used Handcent until Go SMS came out. I like it better...seems a bit simpler to me. Then again I am a simple person. :p

Currently I have the Palm Pre and texting looks fantastic on it... I Like it way more than the Iphones texting interface. But I've heard some complaints about the Evos default sms.

What do you guys recommend to download once I open up my "surprise" evo on Christmas?

how about "whatsapp" its great i like it almost like blackberry messanger

Thank you for your comprehensive answer. Actually, I am not worried about space. Actually, how much it might hold, 10 MBs? :)

What I hate about stock apps, if I can find any very good replacements for them, while I am using the alternative, stock is trying to say "Hey, I am here, use meeee!". I mean I installed another app because I don't want you to get involved, right?
Having double notifications, while I am trying to rapidly read my SMS, a popup goes and says "With which do you want to read the message you are very curious about?"

So, I asked this question. But, locale of Handcent needs to be improved for Turkish, so for now I'll stick with the stock sms app.

For the record, I can contribute to the localization of Handcent, if the programmers are hearing me :)

beer-in-box, if you go into the stock app and turn off notifications, you won't get that message - also, if you do, just read that pop up thoroughly, and you'll see the checkbox at the bottom to make that app the default app for that action, click that checkbox first, then click the app you want to perform the operation, and you'll never see that box again.

Thank you!
Yes, I have noticed that my friend, but I don't know if I need to clear the default app for the action. Can you explain it too?

go into the native app, hit the menu button, then preferences, and scroll down to notifications. It's near the bottom if I remember correctly. Poke around in there and there's a place to uncheck. I'll play with it when I get home if you need more help, I'm on my phone now and don't want to retype this :D
