What to do with the internal 6.6gb storage?

So I'm confused. Are the apps (and pre-installed apps for that matter) we dl from the markrt stored on the dinky 2gb sd card that comes stock with the phone?

No, apps are not saved on either. They are saved in the phones internal 748MB

Menu/Settings/SD&PhoneStorage you will see,

SD Card

Internal Phone Storage

Phone Memory

thanks. I was always confused about this. So the way I understand it, 2.2 will allow us to save it on the sd card?

Was just about to post a similar thread. Basically, I find the internal storage useless. Most apps can't recognize it (many media players won't use it), which gives you an effective 748MB of phone storage, and whatever size SD card you have. The 8GB might was well not even be there. I'd love it if some genius of a ROM developer could find a way to make the phone and internal storage "merge" as one drive (sort of like RAID JBOD). You wouldn't be able to unmount it and read it via a PC anymore, but who cares? That's what a file manager like Astro or ES is for. Also, this would in theory get rid of the low on space issue with installing apps, as we'd have an effective 7.4GB of space.

For now, I have my camera/camcorder set to use it. When compared to a class 2 SD, you get a better framerate when recording 720p simply because of the faster read/write speeds.

I noticed a lot of you have movies/TV shows on your Inc. Where are you downloading these from??

I don't think we're allowed to discuss legal means. But, most of us don't download. Sure, I'll download music videos from YouTube, but my movies are ripped from DVDs that I own. Still trying to find a good Blu-Ray ripper though.

I convert them on my PC using a program called DvdCatalyst. Been using it for years and it works great.

How much space does a movie/TV show use? For example, a 2hr movie/52 minutes TV show? I'll have to give the program you mentioned a try. I'd love to have all my Sopranos seasons on my Inc :) Once you convert them on your PC do you just drag them over when in Disk Drive mode?

I put ringtones and notifications on the internal storage. That way, if I swap out the SD card, it doesn't randomly re-assign my tones.

I also sync music and video as needed.

For movies is depends on what source you use. Could be anywhere from 700mb to 4gigs. An hour long TV show in standard def will be around 350mb

Most apps cannot see this, and I doubt they ever will unless this becomes more commonplace. What do you do with your internal storage? I have my camera set to store there, but i have a slideshow app i use when charging and it only reads the SD card so I move the "keepers" to SD. My mp3's and divx movies are also on SD. So out of 6.6gb internal storage I usually have about 6.5gb free. :)

How do you use yours? And do you feel app developers will ever write apps to access the internal storage?
Please share, Where and how can I get divx movies on my phone

What settings do you use?

It comes loaded with profiles for an array of devices. Using the Droid Incredible profile (700kbps 800x480 video, 128kbps audio h264) Avatar (2:41:31) is 1003.23 MB. A 29 minute episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm is 186.09 MB using the same settings.

Of course you can tweak the settings up and down and change containers to what ever you would like and save custom profiles. Alot of profiles have HD and non HD options to make it easy to choose the resulting size/quality.

i'd like to keep my sd card free for music only if possible. is there a way to make the phone storage as default for app settings and all that jazz. i'd like to be able to swap out the micro sd occasionally without messing up any phone settings. it seems that any new app that is installed puts it's settings on the sd card by default.

also, is the internal phone storage (700ish MB) of a faster class than the phone storage (7ish GB)? I ask, because I wonder if saving apps to the phone storage will cause them to place their setting files there as well. i just don't want to see a degrade in performance if the phone storage has slow read times.

No matter what apps are storing at least some of their data in internal program memory. And what do you mean 'is internal phone storage faster than phone storage'? its the same memory, just partitioned

After an update to MixZing awhile back I now have moved my ~3.5gb of mp3's to the internal storage. That cleared up more room on my SD card for Titanium backups.

To Joe Eris, just drop your divx files onto your SD card and use Rockplayer or one of the other new divx players out there.

obviously i thought the memory were two separate modules, and not partitioned space. you've answered my question though, so thanks.

sooo, if it's just a partition, can you non-destructively rewrite your partition tables so that your small internal phone storage for apps can get bigger? i know some people run into storage space issues with apps. seems like a good solution rather than manually telling it to install to phone storage or sd card.

so far i've just been setting up my phone without an sd card to make sure nothing gets written to it. so far i've only noticed that dropbox will not work without an sd card present. i'm sure there are others, but i haven't run into them yet.

Probably not without rooting and even then i'm not entirely sure. Realistically the 750 or so we have should be enough for everything we could possibly put on there. Before froyo when we couldn't install anything to SD i had over 200 apps installed and still showed over 350mb free. With Android still being in its relative 'infancy' i expect that this is something that will continue to get better and better as time goes by.
