Help What type of memory card to use?

Hello :)

I have the Cricket version of the Huawei Ascend and it comes with a 2GB microSD memory card. I'd like to buy a higher capacity card. However I'm not sure what is 'acceptable'

I have a BEST BUY gift card and looked on their website and they have a PNY 16GB microSD card. It says that it is a Class 2 read/write card.

However I looked on AMAZON.COM and they have a whole bunch of 16GB microSD cards but most seem to be microSDHC cards. There is one that I have my eye on due to the low price (less than half the price at BEST BUY) and it says CLASS 2 like the BESTY BUY model except the BEST BUY model is microSD whereas the AMAZON.COM model says microSDHC.

I've also seen some 16GB microSDHC cards on AMAZON.COM that claim to be CLASS 4 and although they are more than the CLASS 2 cards they are still cheaper than the microSD CLASS 2 card at BEST BUY.

See my confusion? Can someone clear this up please?

Also one last question ... I think 16GB will be fine (i.e., big enough) but can you use bigger? I read somewhere the phone is only capable of 16GB cards or smaller yet I see 32GB cards being sold.

microSDHC is basically the same thing..phone is only expandable to 16GB, so you can only go up to 16GB
I myself am currently using the 2GB it came with.

Well I have an Apple iPod Touch (2G 16GB model) and so I'm used to having that much space for my music. That's why I'd like to expand my Android to 16GB because since the Android does music just as well (knock on wood) I see no reason to carry it and my iPod Touch (in fact I think I'm going to sell off my iPod Touch now).

BTW I'm 38 and this is my first smart phone (I've only ever owned one very basic cell phone prior to this) and man I'm loving it! It's awesome to be able to use all the different apps and actually be able to use them! My iPod Touch had apps that I never used since it required Wi-Fi and I have a wired router at home and rarely am I in a Wi-Fi zone while in public. Anyways I know this is a budget Android but I'm sold on this thing. Maybe in a couple years or so (once I feel I've gotten my 'use' out of this) I'll upgrade to the latest and greatest Android. But for now I'm very happy!

Sweet man, glad you like it. I am 23 and this is indeed my first smart phone as well my friend. . This phone was awesome to me when I watched a few unboxing videos on youtube, decided to pick up one...ended up getting the phone for free...as you can read that story ..i think the thread is on page 2 now...phone is great... I want a 16GB card as well though too, just waiting to find one on sale...I too have a Ipod Touch, but it's only a 8GB, and 1st Gen. But..OMG man..I don't think I could ever sell my Touch even with having the Ascend. My Touch is jailbroken, and it's just awesome. A pro for me is that my router is wireless. You can pick wireless routers up cheaply now man, and they would still have ports to be wired to your computer, PS3 or w/e else you want wired AND STILL have the antenna for Wi-Fi. I sometimes will be a midnight toker, like pretty soon..and I will sometimes lay in bed on my Touch, and go on netflix, or play games or go on youtube. I have Metro so we only have 1x so youtube blows, so I need Wi-Fi to watch youtube enjoyably, plus the touch has such a better battery life, so I will usually use my touch for that stuff instead of my phone. but if you REALLLLLLY want to sell the touch, then I guess go for it, extra cash, but it's still a awesome piece of tech. to keep around. But, I would definitely look into a wireless router.. if you don't ever plan to be outside with a laptop or anything like that like on the front porch or back porch or something, then you only need to buy a B/G router since they are cheaper than the N's...they have shorter range and are slower, but still pretty damn fast, mine is only a B/G, and it flies when im on my touch or phone.

Yes I have thought of getting a wireless router JUST so I can use my iPod Touch apps ... I would still leave my computer and PS3 wired though (I live in an apartment and so the running of wires isn't THAT big of a deal).

To be honest I very recently (just yesterday) listed my iPod Touch on craigslist (in an attempt to sell it) but I will miss it (if I end up getting rid of it). However I barely used it so ... but I've been using my Android a lot.

One thing that worked well for me was YOU TUBE guides for video games. My main desktop computer is in another room of the apartment than my HDTV/PS3 and so I found myself going back and forth over and over. With my Android I can watch a YOU TUBE guide while I am sitting in from of my PS3 playing the game and THAT rocks heh

i just have to swivel my chair around to face my ps3 and tv =D

anyway, ill bbl ...2:35am...im guna lay down

I guess the higher the Class number then the faster it is then?

The BEST BUY card I'm looking at is microSD Class 2 but AMAZON.COM has a nice microSDHC Class 4 card at a reasonable price.

I guess Class 4 is better than Class 2 but not as good as Class 6, huh?

Thanks for clearing it up for me :)

I just wish BEST BUY had the same thing AMAZON.COM did for a reasonable price. Seems the AMAZON.COM item is better and half the price ... but I have BEST BUY gift cards which to me is like "free money" so ... sigh.

What is the difference between classes? I use a 32 GB Kingston microSD card o the Ascend, and had no problems

The transfer rate. You don't notice anything now but, if you use apps2sd you will have lag with lower class cards.

Class 2, 2 MB / s, slowest for SDHC
cards .
Class 4, 4 MB / s.
Class 6, 6 MB / s.
Class 10 , 10 MB / s

Interesting ... I read somewhere that the Huawei Ascend was limited to cards that were 16GB or smaller (and one other person in this very thread seemed to indicate the same). However if it does work with a 32GB card then I would be very tempted to buy one ...

Just curiocus, what BRAND do you guys suggest? I found a few 8gb class ten on NewEgg from the link above. They are not any brands I have dealt with before. Which would you guys choose? Newegg.com - 8gb class 10

Some of the brands are Ridata, Transcend, Wintec. For less than $20! Then if you use fatwallet.com you can get 1.5% cashback. Which isn't much but it's starting to add up. Yesterday I got $15 cashback from buying my phone at Cricket's website thru fatwallet.

Newegg.com - WINTEC FileMate 16GB Mobile Professional Class 10 microSDHC Card with SDHC Adapter

Check that bad boy out. Low price, class TEN.

Ordering one myself. Kinda grumpy, though, since I just paid $40 for a class 6 Kingston across the road at the Verizon store.

I wouldnt go near that wintec, purchased it and it took a crap on me after a month, up until then worked great. after looking at the feedback, I seen that I wasnt the only one that has happen too. so do yourself a solid and dont buy the wintec, research alittle better, I found a kingston 16gb Cl-10 for 55.00 and its well worth it...

Thanks everyone. Also I thought eBay too at first. I give them a ton of business. However we purchased a "Sandisk" from ebay and when it made it's way from China we found out it was nothing but a plastic shell. So, hubby says skip the hassle and just use NewEgg.

Thanks for all of you guys help!

Kingston is a great brand, but I am pretty sure the only reason Huawei recommends it is because Kingston is paying Huawei to promote their memory cards :P

Yeah I'm sure it's something like that! They probably get an incredible deal on them for the devices they make and ship out. I guess the one that came with my phone is Kingston. ;)
