What's the difference between the EVO Shift (with keyboard) and the Epic?

Still, after owning a Moment, I'm less than thrilled about getting another Samsung product.

I'm in the same boat - I have a Samsung Moment, eligible Feb 1st which I've been waiting desperately for. I swore I'd never buy another Samsung phone - I'd rather buy from a company whose core business was phones (like HTC) because I feel they'd provide better support. My concerns with the Epic are the support (lack of updates) and reported GPS troubles - the GPS on the Moment doesn't work, period. I don't want to risk unreliable GPS again.

That said, I went in the store, and the Epic sure does look nice - big bright screen, nice keyboard, etc.. but my Samsung Moment experience has left me very leery of Samsung!

This article illustrates to me that HTC is far more likely than Samsung to fix any bugs by releasing small updates and full OS releases:

^ Get the epic. you wont be dissatiesfied with it.

i changed from my Moment to the Epic 4G on the 7th on January and am loving it ever since. Way better than the Moment and way better battery life on it. Im not one to cry over the not having the new 2.2 update yet cause well the phone works awesome for me so yeah who cares about the 2.2 update as some might cry about.

I don't care so much about the OS updates. But Samsung could have tried to fix the data dropping issues, airplane mode, GPS issues, proximity sensor issues on the Moment with software updates and kept 2.1... if they did I wouldn't be looking for a new phone! I already did the full S:M900.8.OS.DJ07 flash back in November (not the OTA update), phone still sucks.

I'd expected WifelyMon to replace her Moment with an Epic - she chose the Shift for its smaller size.

Either the Epic or the Shift (or any of the newer advanced phones, really) will be a breath of fresh air after your Moment - both she and I had Moments, so I promise that's 100% true and cannot be exaggerated.

^ yep what he said.

Evo,Epic,Evo Shift are all better choices and you will enjoy then more than your Moment as i am currently.

Well, as concerned as I am with Samsung's ongoing support, I think I'm going to take a chance on the Epic. Today is my eligibility date, so by tonight, I should have one at home.

If they kept all of the features of the HTC EVO, and added a keyboard to it, I would have gone with that one. The Evo Shift was a little too watered-down to make me feel like I wanted one. Since I don't work well with an all-touch device, that just leaves the Epic.

So I'll hold my nose as I sign the contract, and hope for a better experience with the Epic than with the Moment. And if that doesn't work out, at least I'm only stuck with it for a year (10+ year subscriber, so I think I still get that benefit).

I appreciate all of the feedback. I'll post my impressions of the phone once I spend some time with it.

The Epic may have a few issues, but it's light years better than the Moment. In that comparison, I'm positive you won't be disappointed one bit. Enjoy your new toy!!!

Despite the upgrade shortcomings, it's still a great phone. When it finally gets the official update it should be even better. I like the Shift, but it is tough to go backwards. Having the Moment, as others have said, either would be a major upgrade, but the Epic has a little more going for it in the big picture and if you do care to root, there is a good community following for it with the Froyo ROMS looking to get even better once they have the official update in hand. Considering it's the only thing holding them back, they've done incredibly well with the leaked release.

By 11:30am this morning, I was the new owner of an Epic.

I've moved all of my custom sounds, wallpapers, etc., over to the Epic from the Moment. Also downloaded all of my apps over to the new phone (Thanks, AppBrain!).

In the short time I've had it, I'm happy so far. There are, however, a few items that I'm still trying to figure out, in no particular order:

1) The iheartradio app (all versions of it) is useless. A quick Google search shows me that I'm not alone. It's the only app that will allow me to hear one particular station, so I'd like to see a fix for that soon. The IHR people say a new release a due this month. These are probably the same people that keep promising Android 2.2 for the Epic, so I'm not holding my breath.

2) The four function keys at the bottom of the main screen: They are all relevant to me, except for the Messaging key. I use Handcent, and I'd like to put that in place of the stock messaging icon. Is that possible in the native software, or must that be rooted in?

3) 4G speeds...impressive! With less than full signal, I broke through 4 megabit, according to the Speedtest.net app, from near downtown Tampa. No 4G at home, but WiFi will cure that. In addition to filling the 4G holes in this market, I'd like to see them work on bridging the gap between Tampa and Orlando. With Interstate 4 being a major tourist corridor, I'd think that Sprint (or Clear?) would have that area near the top of their to-do list.

4) The overall speed of the phone is considerably faster than the Moment. Besides the data transfer rate, the phone handled the installation of my apps at between two and three times the speed of the Moment.

5) Shortly after activation, an automatic OTA update brought me up to DI18. I'm going to assume this is the latest official release for the Epic.

6) Having been limited only three screens on the Moment, I'm going to have to learn how to fill the Epic's seven screens.

Still many functions to explore. I'll let the battery charge overnight, and learn more about it tomorrow. So far, so good.

Wow a lot to chew on. Current Moment owner however I havent been unhappy with it as some here have. I guess ignorance IS Bliss. However Ive been eyeballing these two replacements for a while now. But this group has given me a lot of valid info to chew on.

Welcome to the forums!

As a former Moment victim, er... owner, I can assure you that you cannot go wrong with either one.

For each, the screens will be a big upgrade from your Moment - something that may not be nagging you now, but I'll bet with the upgrade that the screen - and the speed increase - will truly wow you.

Congrats in advance on whichever you choose! :)

Looked at Evo Shift for my girlfriend yesterday.
For some reason, the Epics screen doesnt always respond to her finger .
I think she pokes it too quickly. But anyway theres no screen response problem with the Evo.
We were about to get the Shift and decided to check the call quality.
The Shift sounded horrible when calling my Epic.
Weird distorted ham radio sounds,I could only make out 75% of what she said.
She called back with Epic and regular Evo and both of those sounded fine.
We held off on purchase.

The more I study up the more Im leaning towards the Nexus. For me it seems a good fit. However as Ive already proven Im easy to please (current Moment Owner). Nothing against the Evo. And the only downside that may be an issue is the lack of a SD Card slot. 18gig is a fair amount of memory, but I have a Autocad App that I use in the field with my contractors so I eat a lot of storage space.

Im hoping when it actually comes out next week that a card slot magically appears then Im set.

Why not wait for the Evo3d to hit? If it follows form with the original Evo it should hit the first week in June. If you want to wait that long. Or, you get the Nexus and hope you're within your 30 days when the evo3d is released and take the nexus back.

1.. HTC vs Samsung.. support and updates
2.. size and tech of screen
3.. CPU and GPU... hummingbird vs Scorpion..
4.. aftermarket support.. mod community ... HTC have a history of active development.
5.. size of phone
6.. SDcard size (2GB vs 16GB)
7.. internal memory storage.. 2GB vs 512MB (not confirmed)

#1 not so true. I had the Hero and suffered the same support issues and update issues when 2.1 was released for the Hero it took forever....hmmm

I still say it's Sprint that slows down the update/support issues...

Look how other PURE Android phones work. Updates are no issue and better support.
Only wish I had purchased a Pure Android phone.... Nexus S 4G will have to prove me wrong. I wont be buying it.

But Evo owners get updates quickly NOW. I'm going with what's happening NOW. And if Samsung and Sprint release 2.3 for Epic next week, like rumors are saying, then I am pleased with Samsung's updates and support.......but I would probably be happier with HTC.

Is the EVO using 2.3 now?

When did Evo get 2.2? Didn't they have it before our phone was even released? And didn't we JUST get 2.2 like 2 months ago??

Yep. Evo has had Froyo since before release date of Epic, yet Epic didn't get Froyo til..what was it..February? It was just a bunch of promises since before the phone was released!

Both are expected to get Gingerbread "early summer" so it may be a moot point. I just still don't yet have the faith in Samsung that I do in HTC.
