What's your favorite YouTube Channels?

The TVs are indirectly connected to my Wi-Fi network, as each is connected to a DirecTV box, which in turn is connected to Wi-Fi.

I'm not sure I'm following. Is your DirecTV box acting as a router or extender? Why not just connect them directly to your WiFi network, then DirecTV won't even enter into it. I have a newer LG with WebOS (nice!) and an old Vizio POS and both have wifi adapters and both have built in apps for TY, Hulu, Netflix, etc.

That really is the way to go, and not be beholden to DirectTv. But, if the controllers for the TV's are gone, it makes it all much more difficult to do.

I think I'm explaining it poorly. :)

There's an HD satellite dish on my roof; wiring from it goes through the walls, to each TV's DirecTV receiver (two of which are also DVRs, the other is a client with one of the DVRs as its server). All TVs can record to and/or view programs on both DVRs.

DirecTV can, and i have mine set to, connect to the Internet via Wi-Fi. When I got DirecTV in 1993(?), it relied on a landline to perform various actions, like authorizing a pay-per-view purchase; now that's all done via Internet. (But I still have my landline! :D)

Because I don't want to eliminate DirecTV, and I don't know how to do both, especially without the TVs' remotes.

For this to work for me, I need no physical fiddling around with equipment when I want to watch something. So no plugging/unplugging cables or devices, no physical switching (like an A/B switch). Picking up one remote instead of another is okay. :)

I'm sure mine do, too, but from day one each was immediately connected to a DirecTV receiver, and that was that. I don't want or need another source of TV viewing, such as Netflix, as I'm happy with DirecTV.

The only reason this is even an issue is because I'd like to watch YT videos on TV...like I used to...with one remote...before YouTube and DirecTV parted ways...

I see. DirecTV boxes are connecting to the internet through your WiFi to do updates and channel guides etc., but they don't actually route internet traffic through to your smart TV's. Sort of like Android tethering without the extra data plan. ;)

Before I give you a detailed outline of how to get your smart TV's to actually be smart, let me know if you'd like to bother. It won't affect your DirecTV at all, but it could be a bit of a challenge without the original remotes. In any case, if watching YT is all you really would use it for, perhaps simply casting from your phone would be easier.

Yes! Great analogy.

I'd appreciate your help. I'd at least like to know how to do it, even if I don't do it right now. And, yes, YT is literally the only thing I'm interested in. As noted, I'm content with DirecTV--love it, actually--as far as programming goes, so streaming services like Netflix are not needed.

Thanks, luna. :)

so i mostly cast yt to my tv. among netflis as well. chromecast is the bomb and super easy to use and setup. i would highly recommend it.

The hardest part is going to get to your TV's settings without the original remote. Like i said earlier, I'm using a programmable (Logitech Harmony) and some cheap Sony universal remote I picked up at Target for $10. Both will get me into the TV's menu. From there it's simply a matter of going to the settings and enabling the wireless network and entering the pass key for my WiFi access point. Once thew TV is directly connected to your network, you should be able to get to YT without difficulty.I'm sure your TV has a YT app (I know at least the LG does) When done, you simply exit the smart menu and you will be back to the DirecTV signal.

FYI occasionally you can actually do a bit more with something like a Harmony or a phone IR blaster, than the original. With my Hisense TV, I can get it into workshop service mode with an IR blaster, the ordinary Hisense consumer remote can't. Also useful for TVs that are locked into hotel mode, or only have a hotel type remote.

I was watching some Blu-ray player repair video on YT a while back, and the repairer used a phone IR blaster to get it into engineering mode, to set it up. Sometimes with these things the original manufacturer service remote isn't available, or is stupidly expensive.

But I like DirecTV! :) Love it, even. Its picture quality, reliability, channel selection and customer service have been great for 25+ years.

Of course, there's the cost, which is a lot higher than some other options. But those other options all have drawbacks of their own.

Plus, a couple of years ago I contacted DirecTV, and told them I was thinking of cutting the cord if they didn't dramatically reduce my bill. They recognize a loyal, long-time customer when they see one! They made me REALLY happy (through various discounts) for a year, after which I renegotiated (not as great, but still very good).

I have no desire to leave, unless its replacement gave me all the things I'm used to, and expect. Other than going back to cable (which I consider inferior), I don't know of any other way to accomplish that.

I want all my favorite cable channels plus local channels, everything in one place (not piecing together multiple services), be able to record and watch whenever I want (and skip commercials--I don't do ads!), from any TV, etc.

If anyone is aware of an alternate way of accomplishing that, I'd love to know! It's actually kind of painful thinking about how much I've paid DirecTV over all these years...

i chromecast and still have direct tv. the only difference is that you need to be able to change to and from your tv source whether it is hdmi channel 1,2, or 3. it just depends on how you have direct tv setup.

i also have been looking into yt tv as well as playstation vue as well.

There's a lot of old Bollywood movies there. I find Tamil is quite hard to understand without captions. Lol
yeah i know, some how those are on my search. the last time i searched i mostly got american movies from the 80's and 90's

what about youtube originals?
only one i have seen is the karate kid show cobra kai. i highly recommend watching it, if you have not

edit: moody blues, if there is a reason to watch youtube on your tv, it is to watxh cobra kai. it is a fantastic show. it has been announced that a 3rd season is on its way. i highly recommend it!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I also watch some of the scam baiting videos. When they bait scam callers from India, making out they're the IRS or police or something, and they want paying in Google Play or Apple iTunes vouchers.

Channels like kitboga, hoaxhotel and pappamonkey. Some of these scammer wind-ups are hilarious. They're doing a good job of course, giving these thieves a hard time, and stopping them doing any real scamming.
