Under the category of "you can't make this stuff up", I was sitting in a café in Vienna Austria with my mother-in-law and who should come strolling down the Strasse, but Rick Steves. That was in 2002.

That is awesome, haha. I'd love to bump into him, he's dorky and seems fun. Having just discovered him and learned about him, sounds like he has been doing great work. And his 20-30min videos are amazing looks at whatever place. I could plan a vacation around one of his videos.

I've always (almost) travelled with his type of attitude. Immerse yourself in the local culture and mingle with the real people. My wife, OTOH always wants to take a tour. I think she's afraid of getting stranded in an foreign country, which is ironically silly ... she's Austrian! ?? :goofydroid:

She'll admit, though, the best, and most memorable trips have always been those that we just get on a plane and see what's there when we land. Our last time in Paris we were sitting in a café and two college kids were having a discussion in French about the Rocky Horror Picture show ... it was October and they were deciding on costumes. In any case, they couldn't remember the name of one of the cast members (Magenta) so I leaned over and told them. By the end of the night we had killed two bottles of wine with them and got invited to a party off the Champs Elysee. You can't plan evenings like that, but you remember them forever.

Dude, that is absolutely awesome. Knowing French is a plus I bet? lol

And I like tours, especially when time is limited. But just exploring is where it's at. I did both in Ireland, took a bus tour to see Kilkenney and Wicklow area, then walked the city so long I got lost several times, gave tourists directions, then hung out in the touristy Temple Bar area. Magical. haha

I'm the guy on the tour who wanders off, gets lost and has to take a cab back to the hotel. Tour guides just LOOOOOOOVVVVEEE me. ;)

hahahaha, my wife hates when I do that. But these work trips I'm all by myself so it's pretty great.

My favorite thing is exploring and getting to know public transportation, and one of the marks of a great trip is if I get an opportunity to give someone directions. That is the ultimate achievement for me (haha). Like, I been here 2 days and I'm handing out directions to tourists liek I'm a local. LOVE it, lol
