Help which music files can be played on a HTC Desire Z

I copied over a few mp3 files to my htc but when I try and play them back to listen to, i get a message advising that this is the incorrect file format for the phone. I'd have thought that mp3 was a pretty universal format. Can anyone advise which file format I should be using?

I've got thousands of MP3 tracks in my library, both constant (ripped with WMP and Winamp) and variable (from eMusic) bit-rates, and none have ever caused any problems.
