is that same as a2sd?

the hboot way just means the rom takes up less internal mem
so more for apps.

its just a different way of getting space and without using sd card

just thought id try that route as I've not gparted my sd card yet

As I understand it S2E (Simple 2 ext) is similar to a2sd. It is available on the market, install, click a few options, and it moves things around like apps and dalvik, freeing up space.

Oh, I didnt realize you hadn't gparted yet. After rooting and flashing.... thats an easy peasy part now! :)

Yes, S2E is a way of doing a2sd+. But even with that apps still use some internal space, and conversely an AOSP ROM is a lot smaller than Sense, so you will have 100MB or more of unused space in the system partition. So changing hboot (or using a custom mtd) can let you reclaim that unused system space for yourself.

It doesn't have to be either/or, you can do both. Right now I'm not using a2sd+, because dGB is compact enough (less than half the size of CM7) that I can get the space I need without. But I used to use a2sd+ in addition to the Oxygen r2 hboot, which together gave me a lot more space than I'd ever use.

My battery life is still great after updating to 2.3.1. I get 2 days at least with my normal usage. Has been about the same with all custom Rome I've tried since rooting. Reduce. Oxygen and gingervillain. Battery seems to last forever when I'm not using it. Phone is going on a year old.

Using a Sense 3.5 Rom (Sebastian's Runnymede from XDA) and its pretty good. Really brings sense and my desire back to life.

RCTweaks from the desire HD roms makes scrolling/animations very very very smooth and fast too.

I don't think I could drop sense, ASOP roms just seem boring to me. I like the contact integration and widgets too much. ICS might change my opinion but it'd have to be as good as the sense way of doing things to make me change.

Anyone not on a CM7 r2 Hboot i'd very strongly recommend doing it (if your ROM of choice has a CM7r2 version). I've tried a couple of ROM's on the stock hboot and cm7r2 hboot and they all seem faster on the cm7r2.

Its pretty simple to change using fastboot.

Hboot does not affect speed.
It gives you more space on the internal memory, right? So i'd guess the d-cache isn't moved to SD and then you'd possibly gain some speed.
I've tried 3 roms (all sense roms with A2SD scripts) on both and they we're noticeably faster on the CM7r2 versions!

Of course different people get different experiences, It could be down to my class 2 SD card, But if your rom has a CM7r2 version I would say its worth doing! Just trying to share a positive experience :)

Depends on the Rom I guess. Just wanted to clarify its not the hboot itself affecting speed ;)

Right now im back running the stock HTC Sense Froyo ROM on my Desire :/

I've tried... GingerVillain, Miui (Au, XJ and Android), Redux, CM7 and Oxygen and none of them have really stuck with me, though I have realised that I much prefer using Gingerbread over Froyo, it just feels more... natural to my phone habits :/ over the next week or so i'll try and get hold of another sense ROM, just to see if any of those interest me but I really don't know

I find the stock ROM quickly runs out of space for apps,

Have you tried a stock sense gingerbread rom? Probably the best mix of gingerbread + stability you can get! Something like Supernova Xtreme or Tabasco's silky?

I haven't tried either of those yet, so cheers for the tip, not had an oppertunity to have a play around with ROMs since the weekend but those 2 will be my first stop when I do.

I seem to be a fan of how things are just integrated into Sense like the way it pulls facebook photos to contacts and gives me the option to link profiles to contacts if the names don't match exactly... just little things like that really (without the need for a 3rd party app)

Thats what I love about sense too, Its just got some polish that a group of 3rd party apps and all the 3rd party launchers don't have.

Sense 3.5 Adds in some very nice eye candy and I like the circle unlock too, Better than the pull down/slide to unlock and the app shortcuts do make things a bit quicker!

Actually I've had the impression that AOSP development has been slow generally of late (not just that I've been to busy to keep up!). But TBH I assumed that was the lull before the ICS storm.

Remember that we've had GB AOSP ROMs for almost a year now, so many of them will be quite mature.

Now, can I clear my backlog before it becomes intense again? ;)

Looks like there will be icecream for desire. I had the phone for just a year now and to be set aside would have been a terrible let downer.
Lets see how our hardware will handle ics. I think it may not struggle too much. A laggy phone is a pain.

cool. can't wait :-)
thought it might be going beyond the abilities of the now old desire but good to hear
that isn't the case

Went to CM7 last week as first Rom. However I am running short of memory already. Is this typical? I have put everything on can on SD card though some you can't eg I found that Swype needs to be restarted often if it is on the SD card so needs to be on the phone. And widgets too of course.
Am not running any more than on stock Desire but memory seems an issue.

Did you install S2E from the market?
