the best player ive used is mPlayer
its got adverts but if you have add free they dont load.
it supports most formats and uses gestures on screen for forward backward etc

Nah, I use rockplayer, doesn't drain battery that fast. I use it for a an hour or so at lunch times, maybe uses 10% if that. This is playing .avi's in software mode.Thinking whether I should try RockPlayer but after hearing 1% battery for every 1min, I think it maybe a battery-killer. I love watching videos on phone, and I don't want my battery to die that fast!!
Any suggestions?
i dont know why people want to play mkv/avi on phones when as the screens are smaller you dont notice the difference against a well compressed mp4.
the file size on these other containers are massive in comparison and eats space and memory on the phone.
you can find anything you want in mp4 format tbh due to iphone
