Root Who came up with "soft root?"

EarlyMon

The PearlyMon
Seriously, who's responsible for this new nonsense?

The classes have always been -

  • temp root, achieved by exploiting a hole in the ramdisk, you lose root on reboot (because you lose ram contents)
  • perm root, achieved by placing a superuser apk in the /system area, not the ramdisk
  • full root, achieved by getting perm root and an unlocked bootloader
  • full root with s-off, achieved by getting full root and then obviously getting s-off

I want someone to explain - very carefully - to me why we suddenly needed this new abuse of root terminology.

There is nothing soft about the htcdev bootloader unlock. The bootloader unlock is completely persistent across resets, reboots, etc.

There is nothing soft about the full root achieved after the htcdev bootloader unlock. Full root is permanent.

I think that someone very new to rooting HTC phones - and indeed, very new to rooting Android in general - has slipped in this asinine new term based on one simple thing - they were clueless about the history of Android rooting (for HTC and for all Android) so they decide everyone else was clueless, too.

And now Evo users not so familiar with perm root and full root without s-off have adopted this phrase.

Let's start a trend.

Let's reject completely the idiotic and useless term - soft root.

The htcdev unlock with perm root already has a term and it's been around for a long time - full root.

PS - if my ire is still unclear, let's try it this way: what will we call it when have full root with s-off, you know, the way many of us have been used to for years? Hard root???

Show of hand - who here has had s-off and full root on an Evo and ever once, ever, called that hard root?

Exactly. No one.

There is no soft root, there is no excuse for this term in the lexicon now.

Well put my friend :D

I placed the "soft root" heading on the first root method found because that is what it was referred to in the thread over at XDA. It's really not a "temp" root solution either. It's more like a 2/3rds root solution, no recovery.

I agree, root is root. If you don't satisfy all the criteria, you're not rooted. ;)

In the words of a very wise individual:

"Try not, do or do not, there is not try" Yoda.

I saw you said what they said - what else could you do?

But root without recovery is called perm root.

Get recovery in there and it's full root.

I need to go post this at the source. :(

Yeah, all these terms are funny. It's either you have access to the root user, or you don't lol. No in between, no limbo stages haha, just either you do or not. I see what some mean, such as if you reboot, you lose it or what not, but that's not describing your access to root, it's describes mostly the exploit to gain access to root... if that makes any sense.. lol
