Root Whos using Data++ ROM's?

Hey dude's

who's is using DATA++ ROM's, Which one? and what do you think of them compared to other versions of A2SD+/DATA2EXT etc...

Data++ is just a hboot by alpharev. Once you have that, any rom under 180MB unpacked will run from it.

it REALLY sacrifices cache though, so you cant download market apps over 5MB

Makes me wonder how those with Data++ or with CM7 MTD table manage to update their apps with that tiny 5M cache size...

There is an app for CM7 only on the market called "Simple 2 EXT" that mounts /cache onto EXT.

It only runs on CM7 (not GV btw).

I have a few commands that sometimes manage to mount /cache on ext but it is not always working and when it does, it messes up a2sd. Havent tried on Redux though.

Seeing that someone posted a similar thread a week ago I may sound like a broken record, but the Data++ InsertCoin employs a "dynamically resizable ram-disk" which is created when dl'ing, and deleted when finished. In short: all dls are working fine.

I would like to see how that works.

I'm just going to do the cache ram disk. If that works, I'm going to repartition my MTD /cache smaller.

According to the respective threads the ram disk didn't provoke any problems. Just make sure to share your findings!

I always do :)

Mind you, not sure when I will do this as I have to download the kitchen etc (and learn how to use it) without getting in trouble from the missus!

Ok well I unpacked the boot.img and edited init.rc as required. Now just need to figure out how to re-pack.

Feel like a noob again.

well I repacked the boot.img, added to rom, flashed, booted all worked fine.

I then resized my MTD layout and tested. All downloads failed. :(

Maybe because custom MTD patched boot, it doesnt work. Will wait and see.

What if you use the standard Data++ table?
I have not look much at the user feedback at that script thread, but probably some will report their solutions. Also, perhaps CM7 users feedback can provide some clues.

By the way, what method did you use for custom MTD table? All I see at Alpharev are some pre-defined layouts.

I dont use the alpharev ones. I use the method as per link in my sig. Totally different approach. But maybe this is incompatible with the modified boot image. Also, I'm on AOSP and everyone in that thread is on sense.

OK i could not get that market fix working. But using the code supplied for symlinking apps, I modified it and symlinked cache to ext.

Code:
mkdir /sd-ext/cache
mv /cache/* /sd-ext/cache/
ls /sd-ext/cache/ > /tmp/cache
c=0; while read line; do array[c]=`ln -s /sd-ext/cache/"$line" /cache/`; let c=$c+1; done < /tmp/cache
So I reduced my cache mtd to 3MB (to give a round /data figure of 360MB) and it works. I can download 30MB apps no problem.

Havent got it to work without having a a2sd script yet though. Thats the next step.

Then, maybe symlink it to sdcard so no ext is required at all?! maybe. big steps though

So, I had some time today and decided to S-OFF my phone (running GV v2.0).
Twice it got suck on step 3 and didn't go any further... :confused:

Then I remembered reading somewhere that some custom ROMs have issues with S-OFF. So, I've flashed Redux on it from recovery, and got the procedure completed. Then restored GV nandroid backup over it. Now it is S-OFF with GV.

Bottom line - if you are on GV and want to S-OFF, you'd better load another ROM on it first! :)
