Why are 3G speed tests so slow?

Damn it I hope somebody getsthis. This is try three. I. Did everything. I could to get my speeds right now with going too far and losimg it all with this bs phone the wife uses. Lol my phones is restores to righ afer root. And I think on step 9 of the dummies guide on unrooting back to . My splash os custom can't gwt it back to stock. Have the files just wont do it. Here's. What my baseband is, 2.15.00.11.19 everything seems. Goods but pri is 1.77. 00 phone wprks just can't do jack on the web any help would be great I haven't flashed the second file from the guide. Wanted to see what everybody had tp say but tried this twice on wife's. Lg and the damn. Thing is possessed 3rd try at this. That's why it probably reads like shit but ill explain it better when its not 4 in The morning and a pisser of a phone wasn't. Screwing with me... thanks guys grr lol... just had to put something out there before I crashed fing 4 am got kids lol

Ok its not 4 but shit I'm tired lol... ok read the link to the xda thread. Here's what I think I did (pretty sure at least) I updated. To what I thought was the latest radio combo update from that thread over at xda I seem to be having the same prob they did. Checked my radios etc... I wrote all this down before I rooted except for 4g and mac address. But those should be particular to the handset, yes? Anyway, I ended up thinking I could unroot, apply the ruu files (which seem to have the correct versions of pri, prl etc....) can't quote who but I think in this thread is where I got the idea..... (guessing from memory using wife's lg to post this with... "if worst comes to worst you can flash? The ruu for your software version and be good)
Sorry went back to look fo that post. Can't find it and gods I've gone through everything I could find. Here's. The short of it.
I called sprint we did the msl data profile update deal. No go. Tried a bunch of things with sprint that could be done over the phone. They want to hardwire it and "force" reprovision the phone, if that makes sense. Rooted so that needs to go, I changed the spash screen to a custom caulkin splash got his stock splash zip but it won't take.
So here's where I sit. Want to see what ya think before I go any further.
Got to step nine of the dummies guide (didn't flash the second file yet, splashscreen issue )
I see s-on.
Can dl rom manager but it wont install ( no root?)
Terminal emulator goes from $-# (root)
Can see ninja dude (root?) He's. Acting differently I think not sure.
My pri is 1.7etc
prl is 60677
Everything else looks ok I think. But if I can get it back to stock I can take it in no prob. Got the phone in dec. So o had to update to 2.2 out of the gate. And the prl &pri wouldn't do its thing then either.
Other than. That I'll need to get full root back apply the fix from xda(not much of an adb-command line guy) I downloaded a bunch of files, tried to save as much from the day of root in case something strange happened.lol.
Any help would be great I had no issues in till I dealt with the radio combo thing. kind of just need pointed in the right direction. Thanks guys I hope you can help i really appreciateo it. If I can think of. Anything Else I'll add it to this post.

I used to be able to roam on Verizon with unlimited speed. Now I am restricted to the 1x it seems. Its ok tho, I am now a wiz with changing my PRL to my advantage

If you don't mind could you tell me the procedure for changing PRL I believe I read about it once on XDA but was a little intimadated by it. I was hoping maybe the procedure was shrter/easier by now.

thanks

Charles

my 3g speeds died 2 days ago. I think there is a problem with the tower because i was 1mg/1mg connection until 3 days ago and now it's like 30k/200k. I even have a download speed of -0kb which i do'nt even think is possible. 4g is still in the 4000kbps range

chesterfield missouri is where i am located.

I'm in southern indiana, and I went from getting around 1mbps download, to maybe .15mbps'.

I dont know if they are having tower issues or what, but I had ok download speeds for the past 8months.

But heres the funny thing, About a month ago I was able to get a 4g signal (not very strong, but I could connect and use it). Just last week I noticed my 3g speeds died, and I can no longer connect to 4g.

Sprint doesnt know anything (what a suprise) So im just waiting it out, but we are already thinking about jumping ship to VZW (i know,i know) but they have 4g live here and these 3g speeds are un-usable. It takes a good 2 mins for facebook to connect. Im gonna wait it out untill may/june, if nothing changes...Thunderbolt here I come.

we have some tower outages here in chesterfield. I called and asked.

Where in indiana are you from? I wasn't aware that verizon had LTE in southern indiana yet.

it was pointed out.. that sprint is in the middle of updates / upgrades to the towers... and has caused our slower speeds.

here is a sprint press.. that shows they are working on using a mulit station tower.. with 800, 1900, and 2500 ...

oh, that's interesting. I'm not sure if that's what is going on in chesterfield though because the rep said they were fixing an "outage" problem in the 63017 area and there was no indication on how long internet will be down. Not sure what sprint would tag upgrades as "outages".

3g and 4g speeds here have gotten so bad I use wifi 90% of the time now.. yeah 10 dollars it lets me use my wifi!! WOOT!! go team sprint

what zip code? call sprint and tell them and they will check to look for outages. If 3g and 4g are slow that makes me think it might be your phone and not an outage because 3g and 4g are different networks. Kind of odd to have them both down at the same time UNLESS it is an upgrade area like the guy above me posted. That would make sense.

I would check with sprint first. It was a 5 minute phone call for me.

Yeah, I ended up calling my local VZW and they told me they don't have 4g now, but will soon. I'm in terre haute. I did notice today my 3g speeds have gotten a little quicker, I'm around .55mbps now, as opposed to the. 15mbps I had been getting as of recent.

I own a house in terre haute. That's where i'm from. I'm in med school in st louis right now.

.55mbps is prb as fast as it's going to get for 3g with sprint in that area. That's about the speed of all the carriers in that local. I haven't seen speed tests of any networks faster than that in the terre haute area. Even as much as ATT says theirs is faster it's not. The fastest in that area is verizon, then att, then sprint but att and sprint are pretty close.

Terre haute is a tiny market so it will be a long time until any of the companies will have 4g. Hell, att and sprint just got 3g last summer. Verizon has only had 3g there for 2 years. There just isn't enough market to warrant the cost of tower upgrades.

Its not a bad little town, has its issues like any other place. But I just work and go home. But we actually do have 4g here, just not stable at the moment. It shows on clearwires site that Terre Haute has coverage. But I called sprint customer service, when I asked them about the 4g signal here they replied "are you close to chicago, because we have nothing in terre haute" lol. The local sprint rep here said that they are testing 4g here and will make an announcement but dont know when.

Clearwire said Terre Haute does have 4g, but no word on when they will be doing upgrades.

Thats odd though. It took them 3 years to get 3g after it was released so it's going to be a lot longer before the have 4g. There are some large cities that still don't have 4g.

I hope the press a few posts up is the reason for my ridiculous slow speeds, although this has been going on for a couple months now. I used to have decent service a few months back. Lately it's just an annoyance. Here's a screen shot, did a couple last night, and the rest just now.

Even had a few 0.0-0.6 KB/s results, WTF??

Now I know, Speedtest app/website can always not mean accurate results, since it's one of the most popular testing sources. So I did some more tests with Speakeasy speed test. Same result, terrible speeds. Also, I chose 3 different servers to test from. BTW this is the website version. Screenshot:

I already tried the proxy removal method from this post, still no go. Don't know what is up. It also doesn't help the fact that when I'm at work, where signal issues are even terrible now, lot of signal losses, it takes FOREVER to load pages, while other people on Tmo and iPhones are loading up no problem. So much for the frequency. Not really happy right now. I also got an Email from Sprint saying, 4G is available in my area! Umm, no it isn't...

I hope this improves soon.

Ever since my first couple of posts on this thread I've been having horrendous 3g speeds. At first I thought it was just me. I had, just before or on the 30 th of March I came across a thread on xda that said it had the latest radios. So thinking I was keeping my phone up to date. (rooted, so I wasn't sure that I should take anything from sprint) I go and flash the combo. Then my speeds go to pot. Tried the fix, nothing, read through the link on matching your radios to your Rom. But no matter what I did I couldn't get the speeds back up. I even went so far as to unroot and take it in.
I still get nothing, so I took it home, re-rooted, and started flashing everything I could find to fix it. The only thing I couldn't find was the prl.
My phone says It's on 60677
The last time I had kick-ass speeds was when I had prl 60675
If anybody has a way to get the prl back to 60675, please let me know. It's the only thing I can think of that may do something. About an hour ago I flashed the Sprint lovers Rom .
Theory being that it said it had the radios etc.. Thought I'd take the idiot factor out of it. I guess I'll give it a bit and see if it works itself out, since the flash the speeds have gotten better. Nothing like it was, but at least I can load a page on the forum without losing my mind. And for some strange reason I'm able to use my internet based apps also. It's the strangest thing, I'd normally think the web would work or not. Not this weird halfway behavior.

BTW. I'm on kernel #15 atm, any ideas to help would be great

I don't think I've seen this mentioned, but I made a curious observation while doing the Data Profile Restore. I was having absolutely crap data speeds since I bought my EVO 4G last month,800ms ping and anywhere between 25kbs and 120kps down and up was a bit better. Then I found this forum and the above mentioned fix. After calling Sprint and receiving my MSL code I applied fix and my data transfers are not stellar or consistant, but much better,162ms ping and about 651kbs down and 300kps up at best. Now, the the notable thing, other then the speed increase, was that my signal strength widget before the fix displayed 1x speed and after the fix it displayed EVDO speed. By what I read on this and other forums, Sprint must be shipping out a lot of EVO 4G's that are crippled and need this fix.
Now I need to drive around town and see if I get better speed on some other towers. I haven't been down town lately but I hear they are testing 4G there. Maybe my extra $10 monthly may soon pay off.

Issue:

My wife and I have the same phone (HTC EVO 4G) purchased on the same date. Her 3G was 10-15 times slower than mine. I live in Houston, TX. My speed test would avg 1 to 1.5 mb/sec whereas her's would be constantly around 0.1 mb/sec. I hope it to be a settings issue so I won't have to do a hard reset, which would be my absolute last resort.

Solution:

I called sprint and described my problem and got them to give me both my and my wife's MSL numbers to access our internet settings on our phones. It was a good thing my wife and I have the same phone so I just compared settings and found the EVDO's setting to be the culprit. Here's what I did:

1. Get your MSL
2. After you have your MSL go to your phone and type ##3282#
3. Click Edit Mode
4. Click Advanced
5. Go to EVDO
6. Select Automatic
7. Click menu and save the change
8. Her speed became identical to mine

This seems to accomplish the same thing as selecting Data Profile in step #4 and then press the menu button and select Restore. My EVO 4G would not go to 3G before I did this. Also, I don't know if we have different firmware, but on my EVO the EVDO edit selection is on the main menu and not under Advanced.

Seriously - I recommend the Network app to avoid that confusion, I really do.

The less time you spend mucking inside the area where the MSL is required, the less chance you have of making a mistake that only Sprint can fix.

I urge all to follow the steps as I gave them for that app.

Even if already at CDMA Auto, select GSM Auto, exit, restart app, select CDMA Auto.

The app will read a bad setup oddly and report CDMA Auto when it's not.

This fix goes back to the Evo launch days.

Ok this is rather sad. Me and my friend were in the train and we were both deep into Facebook when I lifted my head I see his phone loading pages normally while my phone took 4minutes to load a page that had flash content like a video link. It took 4 minutes tk load the text not the video content previewpreview picture. I told hik to check out how fast his phone will load that same website and it took 30 seconds. He is on sprint with a much crappier phone which apparently is much better at browsing the internet. Oh and my download speed on good coverage is about 100kbs with 700 mili seconds latency and extreemly choppy speed when i look at the chart the line looks like my grandma's ekg exam at the doctor. I am going to drag myself to the sprint store and see if they can do something about otherwise I am going to kick the Evo the curb. I need a phone that works not one that makes we wait until I get home and get it on WiFi to view Facebook.
