Help Why are apps auto-launching in Froyo?

I upgraded my Captivate to Froyo last week and am experiencing severe battery life issues, in part I think because a bunch of apps keep auto-launching in the background, even if I kill them with ATK. The apps are:

Media Hub
Maps
Facebook
Twitter
AT&T Hot Spots

I've tried to find settings for each of the individual apps to stop them from auto-launching, to no avail. I kill them manually when I think to, but they they reappear an hour later.

Any ideas/solutions?

I doubt that the fact they are appearing on ATK that they are causing any battery drain. They may be there but probably inactive until needed. If you're having battery issues I think you should look into other sources of what's draining it

Stop killing them and you won't be wasting battery power to restart them. If they are not active they are not using battery power. You are making the problem worse.

I do not have battery issues, but why would they start showing up in ATK if they have not been touched? I do not remember this in 2.1.

It didn't happen in 2.1. I don't know why AT&T Hot Spots needs to be running in the background when it's simply a link to a web page!

Actually some apps do behave this way in Eclair. There were times after I unplugged my charger, a bunch of random apps would show up as running in the background, which I would manually kill.

Depending on how some apps are programmed (apps not services; these are 2 different things), they could re-launch based on some event that triggers it, even though you might've killed it using a task manager.

I did some research but the culprits seem to be third party apps that have the permission 'Prevent Phone from Sleeping' which uses the Android.permissions.WAKE_LOCK API. This is apparently very resource intensive and a major cause of battery drain.

I should have clarified that none of the AT&T/Samsung bloatware apps would run in the background after being killed at startup. Under Froyo, the only apps that consistently come back are the bloatware ones like Media Hub, AT&T Hot Spots, etc.

Do you have wifi on for the most part? Chances are when that is activated, the Hot Spots app will 'wake up' in order to try to find a signal in range.

Media Hub is suppose to be Samsung's on-line video store but all I get with my stock Eclair is the 'Coming Soon' message. But I noticed when I try to open it, it tries to access updated info. Perhaps in Froyo, it is set up to run like a service, which explains why it doesn't really go away.

I know, it's completely useless. I'm sure it's just a 'front' for AT&T to monitor you to make sure you're not using 'unauthorized' tethering in Froyo that they're not getting paid for. {see other thread on Tethering Police}
