Why are large threads that many contrbute to locked?

Why are large threads that many contribute to suddenly locked just because the OP request it? A example is http://androidforums.com/motorola-d...build-2233-latest-bionic-leak-discussion.html
I feel that when a thread such as this one that grows this large with so many people contributing their own time and research to it, the OP shouldn't have the right to have it locked just because he/she happened to start it.
I have tried asking about this through back channels via the report button but have gotten no response so not sure where to go next.
I also feel things like this are exactly the reason senior members interested in development and testing out new cutting edge things are increasingly going to other forums available around the internet lately.
I guess I'm just feeling a little disappointed that so many members are able to be locked out of a thread labeled "discussion" just because one person (the OP) asks it to be closed.

Just start your own thread with a pointer to the locked /closed one if you think that it's important and get no response from the op.

If anyone goes and reads the thread they will see the vast majority of info contained is it was contributed by others, not the op.
I'm not trying to make anything personal here, but I think it's a valid point that should be considered when many contribute to something. Just my feedback and suggestion as a member of this forum.

No, because the OP requesting the thread be locked isn't the issue. The issue for me is I don't feel long threads with many people contributing time and knowledge should be lockable so this is a AF policy issue to me, nothing personal with the OP or any of the Mods here.:)
 
It appears as the Scary Alien has PMed you? Did it not go through?

Remember, reporting something doesn't mean an instant change. Often times, such as in this situation, we see researching quite a bit to find out more from all the parties involved. Other times we are enjoying time with our families out at work or have emergencies that we need to attend to or are dealing with much more urgent matters at the time. We try our best to get to reports and problem thread as quickly as possible, but we can't be everywhere at research everything at once.

Sometimes we'll honor the OPs request to lock a thread. Sometimes we won't. Regardless, we ARE and have been looking into the thread in question since you had originally reported it. Each is taken on a case by case basis.

Scary Alien is working in this. For that reason I'm going to lock this thread so that efforts aren't duplicated. Feel free to PM either of us with questions (keeping in mind that we may not be available to answer immediately).
