Help Why are my connection speeds so slow

New theory... Just had a look at some speedtest results from last week when I was away in a hotel. At that time I was achieving 2 mb sec on wifi however I was getting much more than that on H+. Co, uld out be that being in an area where only 2g is available caps your wifi speed, phone recognises it's only on gprs network and so caps it's speed... Just a thought, but maybe would explain previous o2 problem.

I've just put my phone in flight mode and switched the wifi on and the speed is around 7 Mb/s

That's a neat trick.... wifi should be disabled when in Flight Mode.

You're on Talkmobile, yes? If so then the puzzle just became even trickier.... they're a VMNO hosted by Vodafone, who weren't affecting the OP. Time for another  I think.

By default wifi is disabled in flight mode but you can switch it back on if you slide down from top, and yes I am on talkmobile.

Friz I doubt your right as I have data turned off and manage to get the same sort of speeds with it on, off or in my old house which was able to get 3G (new house can only get 2G) :(

I think that there might be something in my theory as I've been up to my parents and tried the wifi there. I get edge at their house and my speed seems to be capped to 1.7 m/sec rather than the 1 at mine.

I have the galaxy s 2 i9100 and android 2.3.5 for 4 months.

From the first moment i sensed that the wifi speeds are low.

comapring to pc (lan) or laptop (wifi) there is 4 Mbps difference.

12Mbs pc/laptop camparing to 8Mbps on galaxy s 2 .

But the upload speed is the same (1000Kbps)

That is exactly as your results "gbswales"

Also , this result has nothing to do with my internet home carrier.

I also did the following test . I turned the home internet off, and operated the galaxy s 2 on router mode. (with no 3g or 4g internet) this way there is only the wifi network that created by the galaxy s 2 . When downloading a file with kies to the phone , speed is low . about 2.5 MBps .
This test does not indicate anything about the wifi problem .... i am comparing with you people to confirm.

According to all these results I would gamble on a driver problem.
I hope it is fixed in android 4 .

I also upgraded from android 2.3.3 to 2.3.5 and installed an original samsung localized rom (at samsung labs) . and the issue remains .
Also, there is nothing wrong with the wifi bars ,And i am 1 meter from the wifi router.

I have not yet figured out how to contact samsung headquarters about this .

I dont understand "gbswales" how can an internet supplier (especially the cable based) can

interfere with the speed of one device and not the other one ?

Also, if you insist , i have another carrier sim . When i switched to it the problem remains .
This is not logical because the 3g/4g connection is off in the phone for both carriers .
One carrier is not a sim card for my country . It is only when i am abroad .

I turned the cellular reception off (fight mode and then wifi on ) : the issue remains .

All that has been said about Wifi reception , Nothing has been said about cellular reception (bars) Which are very low . As you know : when bars are low : the phone increase its cellular radio in attempt to get more bars .
There is a small antenna connector above the sd card slot. I am trying to get a small connector + wire for this connector ... anyone have any ideas ?
I have seen a yotube video when someone puts a pin in that hole and the cellular bars go up. .. i cant find it now .

This may be related. We have 4 different Android phones, 2 different carriers, and a wifi only tablet; Linksys wireless N router (WRT160N). We were suffering from slow download speeds across the Android devices, but no problems on laptops.

In the router settings: Applications & Gaming>QoS>check "disable" WMM Support. Download speeds according to Speedtest.net went from 0.5 Mbps to over 20 Mbps.

My router doesnt has no wmm settings or qos.

I didnt talked to samsung in my country about the problem yet.

By the way ... when sharing the galaxy s 2 wifi connection the receiving computer computer sees a "G" network . Isnt it suppose to be "N" ?
(Before even trying the "qos" thing on the network adapter icon on the computer)

Yeah, just checked mine and I am getting nearly as much on the phone as I am with the computer. I get 45 Mbps with my laptop.

"Baldilocks" , Which android version are you using , i do not recognize your wifi icon with arrows ?

My Wifi speed can be very high but it is always ~ 2Mb below what other computers around it are

getting.

I connected the galaxy s 2 as a cellular modem ( sharing internet connection )

though the usb to the computer for the first time ...

At least here the results are o.k . ...

The adapter speed is 425.9Mbs (picture attached)

This is the average speed of a usb 2 connection.

My cellular 3g network is very slow , so i wont be checking the speed with it to

the computer. ( i didnt get internet wifi to computer through usb )

Note : i corrected my first post : The speed is 2.5 MB/s not Mb/s . Sorry for that mistake...

"Baldilocks" , what is your internet connection speed ?

Anyway, your results looks the same percentage drop in speed : ~ 16% .

I have a 40Mbps Down/3Mbps Up Connection.

My computer averages anywhere from 38-46 down. The phone usually stays right around 38-39.

When dealing with very high speeds it doesnt matter so much as in low speeds
( like "gbswales" who posted the first post)
But i have no comparison about transfer speeds from computer to phone ( with kies file explorer through pc browser ( over wifi) for example)
I get 2.5MB/s .
i have a 54Mb level one wbr-3406-tx router .
That is 6.75MB/s , big difference from 2.5 MB/s

I was having performance trouble on the home network even though both the Galaxy S2 and S1 performance was fine on other networks.
Speeds were under 200Kbps even though the Macbook Air could get speeds of over 6000 Kbps. This is with Comcast high speed and Cisco (Linksys E4200), a pretty fast router and a Motorola SB6141 also the latest. When I first connected these, we had blazing performance on the phones.

The first step I took was to use the Wifi Analyzer from the app store. It makes a nice graph of wifi signal levels in the area. My Wi-fi was competing heavily with others on channel 1. I found a hole in the spectrum of users and changed settings on the router from automatic to channel 8.

Step two was to 'forget' my wireless on the phone, and reattach to it using the phone wireless settings menu. This got my phones going like the blazes again. It is hard to say what changed as part of this configuration. One refinement might be to power down your phone and restart it from scratch before taking these steps.

One of my favorite sites for download performance is performance.toast.net
