Why did YOU pick the Ascend over the Optimus?

I've been running mine at the 710 setting in cm7 n its been doing great.

710 MHz? Hmmm... might have to go with cm7 versus Icarus 1.1

Oh, and the reason I got the Ascend? I wanted a Droid on a prepaid plan and had been looking at the i1 from Boost Mobile. Went to Best Buy and just could not pay $400 for that phone (which was running the Android 1.6 os and may STILL be running it), so started looking at the different Droids and this one was the right price and the plan was good too. And this was the only one Best Buy had for MetroPCS.

+1

the only issue with cm7 which i dont need is mms, and the camcorder dont work, even if it did it still sucks cause theres no flash, but hey cm6 is sweet as heck also...

I like to defend CM6 because it is a great rom but i think people overlook it because its not 2.3.

good point there...but what i do is every week i switch so i can get the best of both worlds...i mean rom.:D

yeah i keep a backup of both on my sd card so in case i get bored i switch over to 7 and play around with it. But they are both great roms.

If I had known a little more about smart phones before I bought, and known what to compare it to, I would have gone with the Optimus V on Virgin Mobile, to be honest. The GPU is the one thing the Ascend is missing that would make the big difference between it being a "beginner" Android phone and a more respectable Android phone. The other thing that creates the gap between the Ascend and the Optimus is the fact that the Optimus has 512MB RAM, and the Ascend only has 256MB.

FYI, with regards to ROMs, the most anyone has been able to stably OC an Ascend to is just over 700Mhz, whereas at least one person I know who has an Optimus V is running a ROM that OC's to over 800Mhz with stability.
So is the Optimus considered a low-end Android phone?

The closest date I've heard is 2nd quarter 2011. The Indulge is supposed to be around $350. That is way too much for that phone. 3.2mp camera with no flash, no super amoled screen, crappy keyboard, cricket has no 4g which is the only reason for that phone to even exist on metro. Also, Samsung rarely gives updates. I really want the huawei ideos x5, but I'm doubtful we will get it now. I have a feeling the ascend 2 is the replacement.
Yea, I've heard that the Ascend 2 is the replacement for the Ideos X5. But the Indulge should be somewhat cheaper because it doesn't have the 4g capability.

By price and specs, yes, the Optimus is also a low-end Android phone. But unless you are trying to play the latest and greatest games, or are so impatient that you can't wait for a handful of milliseconds more for something to open, then it's not worth the jump to a high-end phone, example being the Samsung Galaxy Indulge from Metro, at $300 after $100 rebate. Being a Samsung Galaxy series phone, I'm sure it's great, but it's not worth that much extra up front to me.

Can someone tell me what a high end phone does? Seriously lol. I can't find any faults in my Ascend. The browser works great, it can play some games (although that isn't why I got a phone). I can text just fine........

Just watch a few videos of the HTC Thunderbolt and you will see lol

The highend phones like the new Thunderbold, the EVO, and the Driod X are like having a mini computer in your pocket. The Ascend is a great lil phone, but you're not gonna do anything flash related on it, you're not gonna watch HD movies on it, and the games, well the games on the highend models are incredible in comparison to what we can play on ours.

I'm like you tho, I talk, text, surf the web when bored n its not moving at a snails pace. I dont care about playing games or watching movies on my phone, tho its a nice feature to have when bored or stuck in a airport etc lol.

Mine was a simple choice between the $249 Kyocera Zio (Android 1.6) and the $149 Ascend (Android 2.1). Which would you choose?

Thats how I decided as well lol, Got my Ascend back in November....I'm happy with the Ascend for now and I guess it's a lower end Android phone but at least us (cricket) Ascend users can utilize our 3g network as for Metro users are stuck on 1x ALL the time, that still amazes me they don't have a 3g network..

I've watched full movies in parts on Youtube on my phone and the quality is fine! I get HD quality with some videos on this phone. I love it!

I seriously doubt it was HD quality, may been good, I've watched movies I put on my phone and they looked good, but HD I think not.

Well the quality was not fuzzy in the least bit and very clear. That's HD to me at least. I have no complaints with the quality of Youtube videos on my phone, unless the person uploaded in bad quality.

Same here, no complaints on how it plays movies, just saying it doesnt do HD. You watch HD vs SD and you will see the diff lol. On my TV now I can't stand watching SD anymore lol

I've owned both. I actually owned the Optimus first. I suppose it's a very simple choice for me. I like call/hang up buttons and a trackball. I also like the lightness of the phone and the slightly larger screen. ^.^

(Hope I haven't already posted this, I don't think I did. I looked. LOL)

I got my Ascend back in December (from cricKet) and the only choice then was the Ascend or the Zio (I think that is what it is called) and the Zio (at the time) seemed no good (as it was running Android 1.6 or something like that).

Ironically I think the Zio got an Android 2.2 update while we are still (famously) waiting for that as Ascend owners.

Had the Optimus been available when I got a phone from cricKet then I probably would have gone with it.

I'm happy enough with my Ascend but it does have some limitations and I look forward to buying an upgraded phone but I don't see doing that until maybe the end of this year.
