Why do I want Google Voice??!!

I just got my invite today finally and this thread came at a perfect time. What happens to my regular number if I get a google voice number? Is texting really the only added benefit of getting a google voice number? I'm not sure I want to go through the hassle of giving out a new number.

Got my GV invite today also. I was going to start a thread titled "Got My GV Invite - Now What'.

I got my invite today. Pretty cool, though the transcript is pretty choppy and you NEED to turn off the SMS notice option, as it'll send 3 or more on every msg (sure that's been mentioned). Cool idea, though, and saves me a few bucks a month from having to use the VZW one.

The voicemail transcription is HORRENDOUS. I would say when I used it, it was about 50% accurate. Most of my voicemails were completely unreadable, so the service became useless for me and I ditched it.

It's free, and beta. Google even says that the service is spotty with transcription. It's still free visual voicemail.

It's a matter of preference, but I'd rather use a push service like this, which is free, than waste money on Verizon's garbage visual voicemail app.

Thanks for all the input I guess what I need now is a tutorial! Any Tips would also be helpful! Any clues on where to get the knowledge??!!

Google voice is used all the time!!!!!

1) voicemail as text
2) block people I don't want to talk to
3) unlimited text messages to people in USA AND Canada + cheap text international text messages coming soon!!!!
4) integrated perfectly for instant notification on my htc incredible
5) typing text messages in the browser is sooo much quicker (also looks like I'm working at work instead of typing on phone haha)
6) I can ring my skype account, my normal phone, my work phone.
7) I can keep track of what I told people by text
8) I'm horny for google. I want to bend google over and ...

I have been using Google Voice for about 3 weeks now and can not get it to play my greeting for voice mails. No matter what I do it will only play the standard greeting. I have noticed that other users have the same problem.

Any ideas!

gv is still in beta. they haven't got everything perfect. I run into problems every once in a while but it has no problems 99% of the time

I love Google Voice, for the VM dictation thing. But i dont want to "change" my number. I had the same number for 12-13 years. Several hundred people have my old number. Thats a tough sell to get all my contacts to switch.

You don't have to change your number. I still use my Verizon number and when I don't answer their message goes into my google voice mail account and sends it to my gmail acct. When I get the email I can read it or listen to the message. Add your google voice number to you F&F and you get free sms texting. Great program!

Question: if someone happens to text to my old number instead of my google number and I drop the texting plan, will I be charged for the text? Anyway to avoid?

Did you also cancel your text plan with verizon?

If you use google voice, is there a need to keep our text plan?

*I do not use GV, but if YouMail did not exist, I would be all over it. I do not know how well the transcriptions work with GV, but on YM Premium it is dead on.

For me, email transcription is the single biggest jump in day-to-day productivity since the first PDA/smartphones rolled off the production line.

Saves me an hour a day easy vs. listening to vms

Allows me to receive and process messages when listening to messages/receiving calls is not possible (in meetings, on cc's/webinars etc)

Allows me to better address customer's and employees concerns in a more timely manner. I know what the issue is before I return calls.

No more playing and replaying a message trying to grab a phone number (and no more writing names and numbers on paper just to have to reenter them onto my BB/laptop etc).

easy archiving/reply-to quoting etc.

I use both, voice for voice mail. What I mean is if I send a text for free it would show as my google number. Pretty much not good when my friends are like "who the heck is this from?!?" :D

Yes it shows you google number, but I just put my name in the text and they know why it is coming from.

Just got an invite and maybe I am missing something.

I just want to use the free texting. :)

Do I need to get a GV number?

I also presume that the number is no longer a Verizon number so I will be using minutes.

Thanks

Denise

Go to https://www.google.com/voice#inbox go to settings at the top right of page. Click on the voicemail tab, under voicemail greeting click on record new. Google voice will call you on your cell phone to record your new message. Then go back to the voice mail greeting under the voicemail tab and select your new recorded greeting, rather than the system standard, then hit save changes. Hope this helps.

I'm kinda in the same boat as well. I'm already using YouMail for voicemail. The only things I don't get are the free texting and voicemail transcription.

On the downside of things if I switch to GV I'll no longer have all the nice custom greetings from YouMail I can assign plus Mobile Defense (and other phone locators) does not support working with GV sms.

Anybody else out there not go with GV for similar reasons?

I too am considering a full switch over to GV number. I am currently using for voicemail only, but am considering starting to hand out my GV number to a certain population. Reason being, I am hoping to take advantage of the "voicemail screening" option if your
GV number is called. I am thinking giving this number out to business contacts so I can screen and/or send directly to voicemail, while still keeping my personal cell number for personal contacts. Any comments that could help my decision would be appreciated.....

does anyone know if GV works with Handcent? checking text messages on my phone with without Handcent is so boring :D
