Root Why do you like Android? (Not an apple hate thread. C'mon guys :p)

What the title says. Why did you choose to have an android phone over an iphone or any other phone?

For me, I like the open source. I can't STAND iphones and the way the work. It's like apple wants you to conform and all be the same. Having to jailbreak and get cydia and do all this stuff is really annoying. I just feel that Android has more variety, and more potential then apple. Also, the group surrounding Android, Such as all the devs and rom makers and what not, are way better than anything you will ever find around apple. I find the Android is just a more "fun" type of phone altogether, especially for those of us who love messing around with anything and everything ;)

I think you pretty much nailed it. I have nothing to add except that Android phones are also cheaper from Virgin Mobile and just as productive.

I like the ability to install apps from third party sources, and not just the itunes appstore, also I like that you don't have itunes

I like the android apps/price better.

I also wish Android had Catapult Kings.

I do appreciate the standards Apple has set forth for some of the users. I truly believe that Apple is more user friendly to people as far as compatibility and ease of use. If you know how to mess with your stuff, and you like to tinker, Android is where it's at.

I like to mess with everything, and explore as many options as possible. I have considered the Iphone, but all in all Android is the one for me.

I wish crappy androids were never allowed to be produced. I feel the Intercept alone directed many unhappy Android users to IOS.

Hopefully Android will continue to flourish.

I like that I can build my own variation. With that, I am a part of a community that love to do the same and has brought me to where I am.

Dont like spending premium for what can be done for half the price. This applies to everything not just apple products. This is exactly why i broke my att contract and came to virgin mobile. Tough economy out there and this is how i adopt. btw i would never go back to att...so glad i left. Cant believe i was spending thousands a year for nothing. :(

We'll to be honest I'm regretting NOT getting an iPhone. I know lots of people hate and make fun of the fan boys. Say what you want about Apple, they always upgrade their software as long as the hardware supports it. Think the S3 is going to get the next release after Jelly Bean? But an iPhone 3gs from Q3 of 2009 that shipped with IOS 3.1 can upgrade to IOS 6 in 2012.

As for android sure its open source, that's fantastic but upgrades forget about it, unless you have the Google phone or the vendor wants to upgrade. What good is open source when Motorola doesn't release anything but the kernel. Device files? NO! Camera files? NO! Documentation on building device files? NO! Any solid documentation any where? NO! Qualcomm support for MSM/QSD? NO! So all this great open source and figuring it a lot on your own....FAIL!

This is why Linux/Android or open source will never make it into the mainstream, because you can't find solid documentation. How do you upgrade Windows? Google and I'm sure you will find it on the first link. How about upgrading an Android Kernel from 2.6.32.9 to 3.0? Anyone???? How about building proper device files based on your hardware for Android? Anyone?????

So for choosing something different I'm paying for it in the long run. I mean who has run the same ROM since they first installed it, and it meets all your needs??? Anyone??? My Nexus 7 is the only Android device I have not messed with, and why should I? Everything works, sure there is some software I don't want but it works, all of it. So after 1 year of owning the Motorola Triumph I'm saddened by the fact Google, Motorola, and Virgin Mobile have failed us all.

I mean isn't that the reason you buy hardware that runs software? To purchase something that gets better and better right? Its why the Apple iPhone has owned the market for so long because each release gets better, may not be top of the line but its stable and it works. Anyone excited about Motorola so much that you plan on buying another one? Not me, if I buy another phone that runs android its only going to be Google because they release all source code and device files. May not have the best documentation but at least I can hack on it if I so choose. That is true open source!

To be honest Android has really left a sour taste in my mouth, its why I work so damn hard on these ROMs because its not fair that we have a phone that is less than a year old but we don't get any upgrades. I'm mean if I bought a computer last year think they would tell me I don't get to upgrade to Windows 8???? Its crap and its poor support on Googles part. They need to be more responsible like Microsoft. Microsoft doesn't care about hardware that vendors release they release all info for developers so the developers can release the proper software to make the hardware work. Google should do the same and vendors should be just as responsible as they are with Windows. I don't have any more to say on this.

Never saw it that way. I do see where you are coming from with apple continuously upgrading their phone. It's to bad android and apple don't just come together to make a super-phone for everyone lol.

We can only hope that with JB, Google is moving closer to the Apple/iOS experience and less fragmentation. I dig how easy it is to pull an iPhone/iPad out of the box & start using it- my wife has both and had no complaints while I really had to show her how to get her Galaxy s3 set up right before she chucked it in the trash.

I still think though that for those of us willing to invest a little time in learning the ins & outs of Android, the payoff is a very customizable experience, even unrooted.

Would I have considered an iPhone if T-mobile offered them & had a great deal? You bet your sweet a$$ I would! ;)

While I can certainly understand where g60madman is coming from, you give up a lot of control when you jump on the Apple bandwagon. Also, you'll be paying an extreme premium since Apple marks up the hardware by at least 3 times. I had to set up my wife and sons iPhone and iPod Touches and here are just a couple of the things I found frustrating: Can't connect to a wireless network with SSID broadcasting turned off and you can't configure the email client to use secure ports. In fact, there are really hardly any configuration options in any of the apps - just the very basics. There were more things that were frustrating me when trying to set them up but It's been a while so I've forgotten all the issues I came across.

I for one am an Android fan. I have nothing against Apple per se, I just think Apple appeals to a different mind set than Android. I really like my Triumph so far. I have not had any of the bad experiences with it like some of the rest of you guys. (Knock on wood) I do think it is a shame that Moto is hanging us out to dry as far as any updates. Especially when we know it is capable of higher than Froyo. Hopefully G60, guys like you will be gracious enough to stick around and do Moto refuses to do. Please continue to make it better. Don't let the MotoMonkeys get you down G60. Gracias Amigo:D

g60, you have a right to be mad at Moto, Virgin, & Google. My desktop Linux distro (as well as Linux servers people have around the world) are constantly served updates. To screw the user over like these companies have (no updates, not enough source code, closed source drivers, no donations and assistance to the community, uninstallable bloatware, broken promises, etc.) goes against the very reason why I love open source to begin with. Others and I (as a majority) want Linux to bring a stable, safe, secure, and updated environment to all. Not to cash in on Linux and then abandon it and force people to upgrade their hardware. That goes against principles of good business and being a geek in general. I would never buy an iPhone personally, but may one day look into Firefox OS as I am sure Mozilla will put their foot down and not allow companies to milk open source communities. Madman, if you are short on cash, just ask. No need to code right now, either. I have all the patience in the world. We're lucky to have a real brother out there who cares to do so much for our community like you. I think we can force these companies to care if everyone just boycotted the new phones that come out all the time and we just kept hacking and customizing the old ones. But most people are stupid and have no clue there constant upgrading makes older devices seem less important to companies and then the work is offloaded to the devs. Greed drives Google (layoffs at Moto, broken update promises, privacy concerns) as of late and also drives VM and Moto. Such a shame they want the $ from open source but don't give two damns about supporting the community. I care. I know you and MTDEV care, madman. Take it easy, but please don't leave us like the corporate jerks did. But as I have said, you have a right to be angry.

Oh god, dont get me started on the intercept, id trade the iphone 1g for it

Let's see... It's not about fanboys, it's about how you use it, how you look at it. Everyone has their personal needs and tries to figure out what they want and how the want it.
Below is the list of adv for me personally.

1. Price (VM)! I mean, do I need to be more obvious than that? I refuse to pay $600 for almost the same things I do on cheaper devices.
2. Free apps! It's true than android has more free apps. Not saying they are better or worse, or more apps overall. Just the ones I need are on the Google Play and they just happened to be free.
3. Google (Gmail, Docs, Drive, Picasa and more)! I do enjoy the integration with Google services. Not sure I use them because I have android phone or I started using android because I was already hooked on Google.
4. SD Card! I have 3 of them. I'm just not used to the idea of limited storage. One is for travel purposes only. Plug it in, 2 offline navigation apps, pictures, 25 gb of music to listen in the car. Another is movies only, I watch a lot of them and very little of music. Third: Cartoons! Whenever my 5 year old using my tablet on the back seat.
5. No iTunes (Nothing)! Actually, this one is big one. I owned iPod for a while and idea of plugging my iPod in friend's laptop and not able to transfer anything is just ridiculous.
6. Easy root, custom ROMs! Let's be honest, we enjoy rooting, overclocking, flashing customs. It's just fun. Yes, they are not perfect, but how fun is it flashing Stock, Sharp, CM7, then CM9, then back to Sharp, then Starship, then CM10, then back to CM7. (Right now running modified STOCK, btw). My wife had no complains about her phone whatsoever, I rooted it and flashed CM7 just because I can
7. MAPs (Google)! Ouch, Apple. I like to travel, I drive a lot, I can't even describe how many times I relied on the Maps.
8. Different manufactures (hardware)! Yes, Moto let us down, screw them. Triumph is my 4th android, and all of them were different. I enjoy slim, small, large, thick, qwerty, big screen, small screen, black, yellow, pink, square, round, faster, slower. It's a good feeling coming from something outdated to something new, unlike going from 3G to 3GS.
9. Let's fix it (community)! So, you're not happy, something is terribly wrong with your phone, GPS won't work, Keyboard has no dictionaries, volume is low, screen flickers... Don't wait for vendor to fix it, jump to the forums, there are people with similar problem and they know how to fix it. While you are there, grab beats audio, or some cool live wallpaper, get flashable zip to remove all this crapware that your phone has. Which leads me to the number 10.
10. Customize it (Launchers)! Launchers, launchers, launchers. More launchers. Small, fast, bulky, tiny, minimalistic, gigantic, with widgets... oh yes, widgets! More widgets...I'm minimalist, I used lightest and fastest, but hey, whatever suits you, they have it.

again, this is not comparison of Android vs iOS. Just for me personally on day by day basis.

Android is like the custom ice cream places with 50 different flavor choices to choose from. Plain old vanilla is great and that works for some people. That, I believe is where the iphone comes in. For those folks that just want the no nonsense, streamlined experience. I think Apple delivers very well on those to principles. :D

I do have to say the open-ness of Android has allowed manufactures to develop sub-par devices, cough triumph cough cough, but I still love the fact that Android is built on honestly one of the finest breakthroughs in.modern computing, the Linux kernel! But alot of our frustration comes from Motorola, vm, and qualcom for very poor documentation and source code. But most Samsung phones are easy to develop on because there is more documentation on the Samsung based chipsets!

But apple still has Android beat on the upgrade part, mainly because they make all their phones and software so its easy for them to release updates when they know exactly how the phones were made.

Plus when you buy an apple product by God you pay for it!! And they release stuff today that Android phones had in them yesterday in my opinion. Like the iPhone 5 is hardware speaking way behind the top line Android phones.

But all in all, I believe open source in computing is the way to go! Just ask Linus Torvalds and he would probably say releasing linux kernel under gnu gpl v2 was the best thing he ever did. And it sure changed the technological world forever! And I like how Google embraces the opensource ideal that Microsoft and apple will fight till the death of them.

personally i do not agree with the ethics of either microshaft or craple, so i will not buy there products. i love androids customizability, look, stability, community, free apps, third party software, and the list goes on and on. in these ways craple simply cant compete in my book. they defiantly make a grate phone for drones and automatons though. thank god i can see through there b.s., and the windslows phone is a joke.

A situation like this could go both ways. I messed around with a friends iPhone and I find it "weird" having only one button to push. I kept looking for a "home" button, but as he reminds me, I am Polish ;).

But seriously, half the fun is learning how to operate new toys. :D

Totally agree- about the most frustrating thing I can think of on an iDevice is the lack of a back button. The fact that you have to push the home button to get back to the home screen & then select the last app you were working in to switch back is awful- clearly not set up to make use of multitasking. Maybe I'm missing something there since I'm not a regular iOS user, but it doesn't make sense to me.

I am stealing craple and microshaft ;3

Isn't that what double-clicking home button is for?

Yea double clicking does work for multitasking, but it's a very basic multitask they have implemented. I think the other thing they where trying to say was that they like having more than one hardware button to perform different functions.

When it comes down to it for me, it's the CUSTOMIZATION. Apple pisses me off with that stuff. They treat all phone owners like children. Why can't I decided how many different programs I want to have open? I have an ipod touch and literally the ONLY thing I do with it is watch youtube videos because my phone is straight up more fun to use.

The multi-task function on iOS is no less advanced than on Android. In fact, due to its implementation and UI elements, I would argue it's more intuitive to use.

Why would you watch youtube on iPod Touch but not on your phone? That baffles me...they do the same thing.

I feel the pain for sure. We have been waiting for over a year just to put ICS camera on Triumph.

Do we have any manufacturer who has been be so kind as to release device, camera files and such to developers? I heard Samsung is good in this regard, but do they really do it? I think they release kernel file only.
