Why does Droid email have to suck?

i'm guessing OP is referring to Exchange issues, not Gmail obviously.
and there are tons of complaints about it so he didn't want to rehash the discussion, just vent a bit. totally justified IMO.

I respectfully agree. I love this Droid but it has quirks that I could stand to vent about and where better than here in a community that can understand!?

Not here, haha... That is for sure. I used to think that Crackberry got childish. But, maybe not as bad as "some" places.

And yeah, the eMail/IM/SMS is definitely iffy on this phone in comparison to a certain other brand. And, I do truly LOVE this phone, but I will unfortunately have to accept that it lacks in this area.

K9 helps, but has lots and lots of issues (hope it steps up), and Gmail does "ok". But, lots to be desried. I'd expect more sadly...

I never said it sucks but it certainly is far from perfect. They basic client is good they need only to add a few missing features to make it perfect. It's really an easy fix. Also a lot of people can't view embedded images its not just me.

Email is perfectly fine. Gmail, IMAP, POP3, and Exchange all work for me.

You're kidding, right? I have to use a separate app for work Exchange access, due to the lack of security features in the Android Exchange app. I use the "Email" app for my own business POP3 account, and it has several flaws. First, I have it set to download every 15 minutes, and several times a day I have to go into the app and click refresh for it to actually do it. Second, if I mark an email as read or open it, many times it will miraculously be marked as new some time later (usually late at night so the notification wakes me up). Don't even talk to me about deleting emails. Most of the time if I do delete an email it downloads again in 15 minutes. I have gotten to the point that I delete the messages off my mail server after 10 days so at least I only have 10 days worth of messages on my phone.

I don't use the "Gmail" app, as I do not want to forward all my messages to Gmail.

I am usually on my Laptop most of the day, so these are not deal breakers for me, but they realy need to be fixed. I came off the WinMo platform after many years, and although that sucked, the one thing it did well was email integration.

As someone who supports phones, I have learned that the Email client on Android currently works best with IMAP. POP3 support is indeed needing some coding love yet.

I have actually heard that is true, but just have not put the effort into setting up my mail server as IMAP. I just downloaded K-9, so I'll see how well that works. Thanks for the reply!

I have an exchange account running perfectly since day one with the phone using the stock app. Would a few more features be useful..sure. But it runs perfectly fine for checking and replaying to e-mail. The Gmail app works for me, I have had no issues with it at all.

Your issues seem more like they are on your server then your phone. I have POP3 account linked and it works with none of the issues you listed.

I'm jealous! I have the same issues, I repeatedly check the same emails as read but they continuously reappear as new. I've just started to check my hotmail through the browser. Maybe I'm doing something wrong but I doubt it. I'd be open to suggestions though (on the stock email system that is).

The worst is hearing people b!itch about exchange issues. People seem to forget exchange is a Microsoft product not some open web standard. Additionally, myself and many others have had no problems getting it to work. It seems to me that people don't even think before complaining, they never even consider that it could be microsoft's fault, or even their own company and the way they run/configure their exchange server. Instead we hear them complain about the first brand name they see.

Too bad 99% of corporate mail servers are Exchange servers. I've been using exchange since I got the Droid, no problems, until yesterday. Now I'm getting the same exact problems as everyone else. Nothing changed on our server, all the iPhones still get their mail, same with all the winmo phones. So it's not the server's fault, I know nothing changed on that, cause I didn't make any changes on it. "The application Email (process com.android.email) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again." is not a server problem.

Anyway, the way I got it working again was to delete both the accounts using the mail app, then clear the cache in settings, applications, manage applications, email. Re-add the accounts and it works.

What "exact same" problem? You seem to have left out the details. If the email process FCs you should just reboot your phone.

Anyways, I'm not sure what your trying to prove, but clearly you might have a software issue but since you didn't explain it, I cant be sure it's still not just an Exchange issue.

Regardless, it doesn't change the fact that Exchange is not an open standard but rather a proprietary MS product. Doesn't change the fact that people who config some Exchange servers sometimes config them so tightly with regards to security that neither iPhones or Droids can access them. Yet invariably people blame Google. I'm just saying, lay blame where it is due. If it's really Google's fault, then it's Google's fault. But I'd venture to guess a great many of those leveling complaints, are doing so in error.

Well, I too have continual problems with my Exchange email. Typically, I receive 30+ emails on my business account, but only 2 or 3 come to the Droid each day. My sysadmin has repeatedly gone through the set up process with me, and usually it only works for a day or two before the emails drop to a mere trickle each day.

The Blackberry's I used for the past several years worked flawlessly, but this is the ONLY drawback I have found with the DROID. It is also why a co-worker just went with the iPhone, because our other users seem to have no problem with getting our work emails on Exchange.

I love my DROID, but wish we could get the Exchane email issue straightened out!

Not being able to download attachments is my beef. I've know the work around but just more steps to what should be a simple task.

Th only thing that works right is Gmail. POP3 obviously sucks as witnessed by the several complaints in the link in my sig. Though i do not use exchange on the droid, i have heard it has some security issues too.

Just to add a little bit of perspective:

blackberry exchange issues - Google Search
- Results 1 - 10 of about 6,540,000 for blackberry exchange issues.

blackberry pop3 issues - Google Search
Results 1 - 10 of about 888,000 for blackberry pop3 issues.

iphone exchange issues - Google Search
- Results 1 - 10 of about 3,500,000 for iphone exchange issues.

iphone pop3 issues - Google Search
- Results 1 - 10 of about 130,000 for iphone pop3 issues.

This is not to say the problems you guys are having are not real, but this is par for the course.

I'm using imap in the regular email client and it works great. Have you tried switching to imap? pop3 is a really old protocol.

You're kidding with this post, right? lol

OK now you've missed meme of "moran" being intentionally misspelled and now you're reading crap into my post that it doesn't say.

You're 0 for 2 bud, so I don't know what to tell you. I wasn't gonna say anything about the moran post, but dude, are you desperate to look down on people or something? If so, seriously take your inferiority complex somewhere else. Go correct spelling on the WoW forums.

Anyways, whatever -- this forum doesn't need people bickering about nonsense. The point I was making was that other phones may seem to work great from the perspective of someone with a problem.

suck, suck, suck, it tell me I have new e-mail (NOT) it doesn't deliver all my e-mail

Exactly. native POP3 email on the Droid is unacceptable. K9 helps considerably. The Blackberry had outstanding email delivery but poor rendering, and that browser... don't get me started.

When I close my eyes I imagine a device with all of the best attributes of the iPhone, Blackberry, and Droid. Unfortunately I have to open my eyes again. In the mean time, I'll keep my less than perfect Droid, and hope for improvements in future releases. Just not too far in the future!

Did u mean moron, moron?
no, I meant moran, a tongue-in-cheek internet meme. you should probably try having sex with a woman, your sphincter may loosen a bit

I did not think he was calling you a moron. When I read this, I took to strictly be a joke. I didn't read anything serious into it. I literally laughed out loud (the typed out words make it so much more believable than LOL, don't you think?).

i would like to see a truly combined inbox for all associated email accounts on the phone.

I'm glad it doesn't work that way. I don't want my work email mixed in with my personal email.

Oh, yeah. The obligatory "gmail and exchange work fine for me" sentence. They do. The hardest part was picking through Outlook for the exchange server info. Setting up the phone was cake.

Yes, I only do basic email functions on my phone. I use computers, too, you know.

I get my gmail emails very quickly no complaints there...but a lot of my emails will not display the images within the email. Pics as attachments are fine but embedded images usually don't come through.

I just get a little red x where the pic should be. I have to go to the web version of gmail where the images are displayed perfectly. I know this error lies within Android and not the Droid, cause I would get the same results with the Droid Eris.

Unfortunately, its POP3 only for free hotmail. I use K-9 now and while it also sucks, it is much better than the default app.
