Why I Prefer Internal Storage instead of micrSD card

Both internal storage and microSD cards use flash memory but access to internal storage is much faster than a microSD card. MicroSD cards are rated at up to 10 MB/s write speed for the fastest ones, with my DX containing a class 4 card that has a 4 MB/s write speed.

Internal storage used with the TI OMAP 4460 uses an eMMC interface (V 4.41) with a maximum rated speed of up to 104 MB/s.

Due to the technical nature of flash memory writes always take longer than reads, sometimes much longer, and for microSD cards reads are rated as 8 times as fast as writes.

I could not find any reliable benchmarks for eMMC flash memory access performance but based upon the known speed of microSD cards and the potential speed of eMMC memory found on the SGN the speed of all flash memory operations will likely be much faster than would be possible if a microSD card were present.

I suspect or guess that the speed of the internal memory on the SGN is one of the reasons we see zero lag when taking pictures since the pictures must be quickly offloaded to flash memory to keep up with rapid picture taking. I also suspect that the camera first writes to RAM and then copies to a file on internal storage after capture is completed although several images could be stored in RAM before copying to flash. Since there are dual processors both of these operations could occur simultaneously.

I'm not sure it could happen this fast if a slower microSD card were the storage destination for pictures like it is on my DX.

Very good point! I'm all for speed. I never needed to take the sd card out of my Droid anyway. Except when I needed to replace it. I wonder how that's going to work.....

ummm those 2 things aren't mutually exclusive

32 gb internal and 32 gb SD and you're close to iphone 64gb territory, though like you said, it's still much much worse cause SD is so much worse than internal. So JUST internal, and JUST 32gb is pretty poor.

I really haven't noticed a difference. I currently have a GS2 and it has an SD slot, but with 16GB of internal memory it is the same as my NS which I had prior. I didn't miss having an SD card so I see no reason to buy one now.

HD video? what else could you possibly notice a speed difference?

Why is 32gb poor? Just because its 32gb doesnt mean you have to fill it up to fill it up.

Flac on a phone? really? 15000 pictures? really? when you really think about it. 32gb is plenty.

Just out of curiosity what does everyone need internal storage for?

Picasa - cloud storage of pictures
Google Music - cloud storage of music
Netflix, Market... movies
Dropbox, box.net - any file storage

Do you really need that many stored on a phone?

Guess I just don't get why people worry about storing 32, 64, etc GB on their phone...

This...I barely use 2 gb on my 32gb sd card

Based on what I have seen HD video recording on the Galaxy Nexus uses about 1 Mb/sec. So 1gig would hold less than 17 mins of recording.

Thats one of the reasons why I would prefer 32G over 16. Pity 32Gig version is not avail at this stage tho.

Personally, i can't use the cloud option. The 3G at my house is far too spotty and i don't have access to high speed internet where i live. All of my pictures, videos, music, etc needs to be on my phone or i won't be able to access it when i want.

With that said though, i don't have a problem with 32 or 16 GB. They will both be enough memory for me. 16 might be pushing it if i wait 2 years to upgrade but I'm sure i can dump stuff off on my desktop if need be.

I have generally preferred something like the RAZR with the 16/16 arrangement because the sd portion is portable and expandable for a max of 48 with a 16/32 setup. My DX 16GB sd card is almost full after a year and a half and the internal memory has about 5GB left so I like a single memory space in this case because internal flash simplifies memory usage and improves performance for all apps that need external storage.

Increased cloud usage reduces the likelihood of ever running out of 32GB internal but there is still a risk of exceeding this if a lot of content is cached locally. I have never had a problem with being prevented from installing an app due to storage shortage on my DX but it is a greater possibility with a single memory space depending on how the partitions have been carved out of the internal flash.

Its just about having the option of choice. That's why alot of people are a little ticked off! 16 or 32 can work for me. But the option of either going with cloud computing or simply inserting my 32 gigs of removable memory lets that decision lie in my hands....That choice doesn't exist with the Nexus...

Cloud storage and streaming media might be perfect for those in area with high bandwidth available, but I can't stream a SD youtube video without it stopping to buffer every 30 seconds. Also, the power consumed to stream is MUCH greater than the power needed to pull it from memory. I can easily listen to music all day at work without plugging my OG in...NFW that is happening with streaming.

declanh has a valid point. Video recording in 1080p will eat up memory. I currently have about 14GB I'm using to store all 6 Star Wars movies - which will look GORGEOUS on the Nexus display - and about 1,000 songs.

I can imagine we'll end up needing that extra space for pic/video recording.

I actually wished VZW to release a 16gb version with more forgivable price because I'll heavily rely on cloud services with grandfathered unlimited data plan. :)
