Why is Android so behind in storage capacity?

Man if i see this complaint one more time i'm gonna explode.

Look im sure someone has said this already (a little you even said in your post) but
1. Android installs apps into the built in Memory which for droid is (512 mb not 256). A lot of people get this built in memory confused with RAM, which is used to run the application not store and to be honest 256 RAM is good enough for a desktop with windows xp and even can play some pretty good games (Dofus).

2. I've heard that google is working on this, and as long as it is working on it there really isn't a problem because by the time you managed to fill your phone w/ 512 mb worth of apps a ton of new features will be on the Droid.

3. Also the 16gb thing is the very thing that makes Android > than apple, because you have the ability to increase/switch your storage. At any time you can just grab a larger microsd card and put it in. In all honesty you probably wont need more than 16gb and 32gb sd cards are expensive and we don't need to even talk about 64gb. This saves not only phone companies but you money.

4. I really don't know what a PMP is so i can't really tell you to replace it or not but i can tell you that this size problem every one keeps complaining about is irrelevant. I mean i have yet to hear ANYONE actually have to delete an app because they used up all 512mb.
Plus if you root your phone im pretty apps can be moved to ur sd card, so their problem solved.
The only real problem with loading off of SD card is potential pirating, which as a consumer you really don't need to worry about (only devs do).

Personal Media Player. Think Zen (creative), Zune (microshaft), iPod (apple). And you are correct, the size of a device's internal memory has no effect on its ability to function as a PMP so I don't know why people complain about that.

wow i though PMP was a type of bomb at first (now i see thats EMP)

but now that i know what it is i have more to say.

As much as i love apple for the ipod i feel like their the cause of complaints like this. I mean whats the difference between hearing a song from an ipod, or some cheap metro phone? I mean the interface might be different or whatever but the music is still the same. I mean is it really that big of a deal?

I hope to bring to light the reality of this "running out of internal memory" problem.

The G1 (non-rooted) has a mere 74 MB of space for users to save apps. G1 owners started running out of space almost immediately. At first I thought that Google would surely release an update to amend this problem and allow the apps to run from SD. Sadly, I was wrong. The G1 (which I still use and love, except for this memory issue) was a test. A test to see if people would go for this non-iPhone smartphone.

Releasing the G1 with only 74 MB of space for apps reinforces "planned obsolescence"--the creators of this phone released it with the intent that it if users liked it but needed more internal memory they'll just buy a new phone when it becomes available.

The G1 was really a PATHETIC example of planned obsolescence. From the moment it was released, people started grumbling about this memory issue. T-Mobile/Google/whoever responded that they were looking into it. Well? It does speak volumes about customer service or consideration...releasing a phone with this memory issue KNOWING the intent is to get consumers to buy more phones in the near future.

With this memory issue, G1 users have all been given a big middle finger.

I'd love to root my phone but I also want full access to the app Market (and if I understand correctly, rooted users cannot buy apps).

So, with everyone talking about how less than a GB of internal memory is hard to work with, consider the crap memory with the G1. I've had the phone for 13 months and I've had to constantly worry about internal memory for 12 months.

Why don't any of the manufacturers that make Android Phones like HTC, Samsung, or Motorola make any phone with internal memory? I would pay more for a phone with 32 GB of internal memory with no memory card slot than a phone with 256 MB of internal memory with a memory card slot.

@Benmann

I understand why you said that but in all honesty thats not smart. I guess having limited capacity is frustrating but being able to switch memory cards is a huge advantage (for me anyway)

I am not a big fan of switching memory cards. all my music and videos fix just fine in my 4 GB Ipod Nano 3G.

Plus rumor has it that the Iphone will have up to 64 GB of internal memory.
If it wasn't for AT&T i would just buy a Iphone even though i prefer the openness of Android.

I am not saying that all android phones should have large internal memory like the Iphone or Nokia N series phones. but i think they should at least make some of the phone with large internal memory so that we have the choice of picking either internal or external memory. or why not have both like the Nokia N97 & N900?

But then, what will you do with it that you can't do with external memory? I see that you want games. Well, ha ha there are none that push the memory envelope right now and even when there are devs can put data on the memory card so whats the big deal.

I am just not a big fan of memory cards. in fact i just plain don't like them, I feel better using some thing with the memory built in.

Then frankly you shoulda got an iphone cause thats what apple's all about. Everything is built in, which is great at first but may get in the way of the creativity of developers and the wants of the consumers.

I won't be getting a Iphone unless it gets on Verizons network, but i really like the openness of android over Apple for developers being able to develop what they want. and part of the wants of the consumers is me wanting internal memory.

But wanting internal memory has nothing to do with Android, it has to do with phone manufactures like motorola and Samsung.

Again its really not THAT big of a deal, 256mb should be good for a little while.
I do admit that if Google doesn't do anything their going to have a problem but they will have to think of something eventually.

I know its not the Software fault for having little internal memory. but so far no manufacture is making any phones that use android with a good amount of internal memory.

Then stay away from Android. Simple how life is when you can see things clearly, isn't it?

Don't like memory cards, stick with iPhone. I presume you don't like removable batteries either.

Damn. Why do people think the world have to revolve around their particular needs and not the rest of the population?

I've never heard anyone ever not like extra removable memory, until now. Damn...

I like the removable batteries just not memory cards because i have had a history of having memory cards fail and lost all my pictures, videos, and files i had on them.

removable batteries are much better than non-removable ones because batteries are only made to work for so long before they no longer hold a charge and you just get a new battery over having to get a new phone.

Valid concern. I've also had a memory card fail so I feel your pain. Not a catastrophe generally for me because I tend to not keep valuables on them for very long, but it is a pita to replace it (and for a phone reconfigure any apps that had data stored there).

Internal memory can fail too though.

That's why you backup your card. I believe there are programs in the market that make this easy. No kind of memory is 100% safe, internal or external.

Ultimately i don't see why people choose to complain about android on an android forum?

Remember a while ago some guy complained about the alarm clock

Hello my good friend Blackbrawler! You caught me while I was on. Most people aren't here to live in ignorant bliss. I just get on here for info. Like many other people have said before, its about improving the OS/device. If "complaining" or bringing up the downfalls of the device (yes, Android has them too but it's natural because it's new) does the trick then complain away. I don't understand why people take things so personally on here. It's a forum. It's used to discuss the positives AND negatives of the device. They used an open-source linux based system so that developers including the ones at Google can improve the OS quicker through feedback and by letting others have a stab at it. By the way, do you have an alarm clock app suggestion for me? Thanks buddy!

Complaining and improving the device are two different things. For example this guy says he just doesn't like external memory just because even though its superior to internal memeory in every way except for speed. Do you really think thats being fair. Blaming the Android for something it has very little to do with (internal memory size)?

And be honest.. if you had said "does any one have a better alarm app" you would have gotten a much better response from community. Or even request the app in the dev section and these are completely different from complaining which by definition no one likes.
