Why is choosing a major so hard?

I will be attending University in Canada in the fall and I am not sure if I want to major in

A) Psychology

B) Geography

I want to become a Psychologist because I fine learning about the human mind to be very interesting, and I am sure the job can be very rewarding.

I want to major in Geography because I has always been fascinated with the earth and everything on it, if I were to choose this major I would go for Environmental Geography, I always loved Science. I would love to work in the study of Global warming.

I think I will just take an introduction to Psychology and Geography and see how it goes from their.

Go with Geography. Psychologists tend to be crazier than their patients. People study psychology to feel better about themselves, because they can point to someone crazier than they are and say " At least I'm not that guy."

Haha, I like that. I am thinking about Geography with a concentration on the environment possibly with a minor in Environmental studies.

an average college student changes their major twice before they even start their major courses.

i know it's hard, especially at such a young age. do you choose job future? do you choose what makes you happy? are you lucky enough to want to do something that occupies both?

funny though, many people end up changing jobs throughout their working years also. some go back to college to do so.

my first major was psych. really didn't help me with anything career-wise so i joined the Navy. not as an officer, but as an enlisted guy...where i found my career. i had many jobs to choose from, but selected electronics tech. while serving my time in the Navy, i completed my BE in electronics engineering.

life is funny. at times you think you know exactly how you want your life to play out...then LIFE™ hits you in the face and tells you otherwise. :)

study hard, and good luck on your future!

Holy blanket statement, Batman. I double majored in Psychology & Communication, & went on to get a Master's in Organizational Development (like an MBA w/ less finance & more psychology). I also took many graduate-level classes in Industrial/Organizational Psychology. There are MANY different facets of psychology rather than the stereotypical clinical psychologist psychoanalizing everyone. At one time I thought I wante to go into Human Factor Psychology, which is basically the study of ergonomics. But, it was more math than I was comfortable with.

OP, I think you have the right idea in trying them both. And, don't forget you can double major, or major in one & minor in the other. I actually changed my major a couple times, & still ended up w/ a double major in 4 years.

I think it is better you can Major in Geography. You can know about Psychology by reading books also or doing a Certification course when u find time.

Honestly, you have to do what will make you the most happy and what you can imagine yourself doing for a long time. So it's totally up to you. Sorry for the standard answer but it's true.

I've changed my mind a few times. I started Uni with one thing in mind and after much decision changes I made my final choice in my 3rd year (econ major, math minor) and now after some of the math courses i'm really enjoying, i wouldn't have mind it the other way round. But I'm still enjoying both aspects of it and happy with my decision.
What school will you be coming to up north here?

Edit: And exactly what pantless penguin said...good advice.

College is too expensive to major in hobbies that you think are neat-o but don't lead to solid careers. For every post in a forum that says "Find something that makes you happy" I can point to three posts somewhere else that says "oh em gee, I majored in (insert field that probably doesn't use much math) because I thought it would be fun and now I have eleventy billion dollars in loans and the only job I can find is as a waiter at my local Chili's."

If you're not a trust fund kid, don't major in hobbies. It's not worth it.

Personally, I think we're about 5 years away from a major breakthrough in education that will put academia on notice, and about 20 years away from colleges fading into history as people find better and cheaper ways of acquiring skills.

A psychology major isn't very rewarding unless you get a Ph.D and actually become a psychologist. Otherwise you aren't really licensed to do all that much. Really the only evidence I have of this is my sister. She just graduated in December from SDSU with a Psychology major, and had a VERY hard time finding a job that actually uses her degree.

I would go with Geography on that accord. Psychology is good information to know, but IMO not a good successful career path unless you plan on going all the way to Ph.D

Right.

I should have been more clear in my post. Choose something you enjoy but with a solid idea of careers that can follow with that major(s). And I believe it's always good to have a backup plan..i've got several :D

My original intent before coming to IU: Environmental Management major

Now: Environmental Management, French, and Italian majors w/ Linguistics minor

You'll either be changing or adding while in college. Everyone does it.

First year in college: Aerospace Engineering
Third year in college: Electronic Media Communications

I HATED taking engineering, but love news, media, movies and music...go figure. You'll probably end up changing it..the best of us do haha

You also must remember that no matter what you write on that piece of paper, you will have a double major... one in girls and the other in partying.

I don't plan on changing my major. I'll keep you updated haha. I'm going in for civil engineering because either I have a foolproof job at Saiful/Bouquet (my dads best friend in pasadena) or Rosemont Copper here in tucson since I already have an in with my uncle.

Geography: And convince the idiots to start drilling holes..............HERE!

Psychology: You really want to deal with nut cases for the rest of your life? Family fights? Battered spouses and kids? Drunks? Drug addicts? Yeah....thought so :)
