Root Why root?

This is a total noob question.. but maybe some of you have some links to info about rooting. Why i should or shouldnt root, etc..
I know nothing about and would like a little more info about it..

THere is tons of links about how to do it.. but not alot of links about why . and what it will actually do for me / my phone..

Well there are a few main reasons that i choose to root my phone. More customization, quick roms, better sound quality with a voodoo kernel. It's mainly about customization for me though, i love what CM7 does and all of the theme's compatible with the theme chooser.

I mean just look around the XDA forums and you'll see why most people do it.

So i see the instructions to root.. But then what? Do i have a empty phone and need to download a bunch of other stuff?
There is so many links for if you know what you are doing.. not alot for people like me , interested but dont know where to start..

Like maybe since you have done it.. you could post the steps you took, what you chose and why.. etc.. if you have time.. thanks in advance.

After you go through that there is a tutorial on flashing custom roms. If you feel you are pretty tech savvy I would go ahead and do it. But it can be very confusing and you can really mess things up if you don't know what you're doing.

I'd suggest looking at the various Roms available first and be sure there is something that makes it worth it for you. I've had a rooted Android phone of one kind or another since all the way back when the original G1 first came out. I personally prefer Cyanogen since about Cyan 5 but Modaco, and many others have some great Roms out there. Now a days its really easy to change. Just dload clockwork recovery and Rom Manahervand your pretty much set with all you'll need once your already rooted.
