Root Why should I root my Incredible

so is there any reason to root the phone and how do you do this? Htc incredible
Most people root for a couple of reasons:
1)Super User capability that allows them to have more control of their phone to
i) remove carrier apps
ii)overclock/underclock the processor to increase speed or save battery
iii)true Apps2SD
iv)open up more memory to be used on the phone
and much much more

2)Custom ROMs that allows for further customization

If you have any questions, post it in the Incredible Root SubForum, where I've moved your thread.

Remember, rooting voids your warranty!

I originally rooted because I had to factory reset my phone several times due to issues caused by poor HTC customization QA (ie bootloops, out of memory notifications, missing text messages, and on and on). My wife had the same issues with her phone also. Neither of us have had any major issues since flashing an AOSP ROM.

EDIT: If you aren't having any issues with your phone and you are happy with how it is, then I wouldn't recommend rooting. Really if you don't know why you should root, then it probably isn't for you.

I went root recently. I gained the following:

1. Better UI. I use Launcher but CyanogenMOD has a few very good tweaks.
2. Titanium backup of apps including data. Means when you restore apps (1 click with paid titanium) you also get setting sand such back.
3. Hulu app (modded flash for hulu too)
4. Better battery life when phone is not being used.
5. more app room.... had got the storage full error before.

HOWEVER, you better read thoroughly and be very patient. The only problem I have had at any stage of the process (root, flash ROM, mod, kernel,.....) was when I got impatient. Sometimes things take MUCH longer than expected.

Good luck, read "Am I the only one afraid to root" thread in the main forum.... good read into root!

so is there any reason to root the phone

I'm going to give you a direct answer to this question. First, ask yourself the following question;

"Is there anything that I wish was different about the software capabilities of my phone?"

It could be along the lines of something that your phone wont currently do. It could be something your phone could do better. But, if you are perfectly happy with what your phone does right now, then no, there is no reason to root. If you could come up with a list of things you want changed, people here can tell you how to make those changes (many of which won't require root).

As for me, I wanted less bloatware, and direct control over my system. For that, you need root.

+10,000! Well said, Medion

If I find my Nexus One or if I get another Android, I'm going to root it right away and my reason is from what another AF member told me:

In future, root and push a security app to /system/app so it will remain after a hard reset. Go on Roze, you know you want too ;)

It's dead simple really. A wipe/factory reset only blanks /data, so anything on /system is left (as it's where the stuff the phone needs to run is kept), by putting the security .apk there, it's safe 'til another ROM is loaded (possibly removed with an OTA).

All you have to do is use ADB to push the .apk to /system/app, use busybox to copy it there or have someone knock up an update.zip to install via recovery.

Yup, that's what I do. Anything I want on my phone, and not on the SD card or the internal storage, I put under system, and zip it up. This includes ring tones or specifics apps.

I hate having my ringtones on the SD cards because when the SD card is mounted on a PC, and someone calls, I get the stock ring tone. A minor annoyance, but it throws me off.
