Hi - I was looking for threads on this subject to try to decide what to do with my son's Bionic and this lapdock.
His Bionic is stock and he LOVES using it with the lapdock. It is not the fastest but as we have no home internet, it works just fine for him. He also uses Docs to Go for a Office suit.
All is good for him with the lapdock.
I heard a rumor that ICS may be pushed to Bionic users soon and got worried and thought I'd better check things out ahead of time because of the problems I had with ICS upgrade and Webtop 3.0 on my Razr Maxx.
I have an Atrix 4g lapdock that I use with my Maxx. The Atrix and the brand new Bionic lapdock work exactly the same for my Maxx with adapter cables.
I was excited about the ICS upgrade; I had been told by Motorola the upgrade would fix the evbridge loop problem that I encountered with the Maxx and the lapdock. (evbridge ran all the time and I had to shut phone off to get service to stop)
Well…imagine my horror when I upgraded to ICS and then went to get on the Internet with my lapdock and there was no firefox! Yipes! Yes, you can use Chrome, but … the Web3.0 forces the viewing area into letterbox and the resolution on the Atrix and Bionic lapdocks is terrible! Everything is pixilated and fonts are stretched. There is one adjustment that I could find on the Maxx that stretches or shrinks the viewable window on the lapdock. To get fonts back into proper size, you have to shrink viewable area until it isn’t a whole lot bigger than the phones screen.
Webtop 3.0 you also lose all the little extras that you become used to with Webtop2.0 File Manager was a big loss to me. You still can find and move files from USB, but you have to have the correct file manager downloaded. Some file managers won’t see the USB.
Also, I use Docs to Go and Google Docs for a lot of writing projects. Ack. Resolution is terrible on Docs to Go. Yuck.
For ME the ‘upgrade’ to ICS was a terrible mistake!
I spent hours on the phone with Motorola trying to find a solution. They ultimately told me that they couldn’t help me. Webtop 3.0 is all there is now. No going back to 2.0 or GB.
I find that people who LOVE webtop 3.0 either didn’t use it before or don’t have lapdocks. For people like me, who have no home internet, who don’t need a full featured laptop, who aren’t speed demons, will miss webtop 2.0 and will have to resort to rooting and theft of wireless tether.
So…I need to find if what I suspect is true. When the official ICS upgrade is pushed to my son’s Bionic, will he lose webtop 2.0? Will webtop 3.0 work just as awful on his Bionic (or my Atrix) lapdock? If so, I will root his Bionic, and refuse the upgrade to ICS.
It should be noted that I do not have a lapdock 100 or 500, so I can’t say how the resolution will be on those lapdocks with Webtop 3.0. I got the Bionic/Atrix lapdocks because they had the larger screens 11.6” (and not letterbox)
