Wi-Fi Dropout?

squidz66

Lurker
Hi All,
Please be kind,as this is my first post!
I've had the phone for three months, originally on 2.3.3 via Optus Australia. Last week upgraded via Odin to 2.3.5 (xxki4).
My problem is that after about 3'mins, the Wi-Fi stops working!
Did it before the flash, and does it since!
Turning Wi-Fi off and back on (on the phone) sorts it out, but there has to be a total solution?

Is it the phone, or the router?

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi squidz66, you'll find everone is very helpful and kind here on AF (unlike other forums). Ive noticed this on three devices in my house, which makes me wonder, in my case , if its my local dsl provider (wifi) or my ATT service?

Its a wild guess. I can be browsing the net on my phone, then the 'cannot connect' page appears. i grab a second phone and it too, cant connect, etc.

Then when, like you , i turn wifi off and back on, my connection returns.

Now "this is a very wild but i -hope-its-not-true" type of guess: Now that ATT has "throttled" even unlimited users, and placed all others on a tiered plan, are they causing signals to drop so that when we turn off wifi and use att's juices, it runs up the data so we use up "allotted unlimited data" and throttle or overcharge (tiered customers)? Again thats a wild guess since when this happens, and i turn wifi off, suddenly i can surf again...

Just the inconvenience of having to turn wifi off and on to reconnect is not cool (but neither would it be if its a carrier-generated issue...)

Again, just my guess... not a fact...

Hi Squidz!

Do you have any other wireless devices connected to the router, and if so are they all maintaining their connections okay?

When the S2 loses the wifi, does it remain enabled in Settings/Wireless & network/Wifi settings?

Sorry for the questions, but wireless problems are a PITA to diagnose.

Thanks for the reply guys.
Something as nefarious as a 'Telco' getting your Wi-Fi to drop out, would be just like these corporate wankers!

Slug. I turned off and restarted my phone today (first time since the flash re-boot), and was surfing around for a good two hours trying to get it to drop out, to see if it was still enabled! To the point where I was going to write a "Thanks, but it's all cool now" ... when it dropped out!

There are no other wireless devices, an ethernet type cord to the PC and that's it.

In the setting on the phone it says 'connected'. Signal strength good & etc.
But no connecting to web pages....

This is EXACTLY what I see too. I have two Dell STreaks and one Samsung Captivate. All on 2.2, One rooted, the others unrooted. When one "shows" connected etc, and then , receive the 'cannot connect to web' page message, I grab the other two devices and get the same message.

Then, like you, when I turn wi-fi "off" then back on again, everything works fine... but my reconnection lasts longer than 3 hrs (unlike your experience).

As it occurred prior to the update we can rule out that as a cause. It works for a reasonable length of time so a straightforward hardware issue is also unlikely. The next step I'd suggest is checking the router manufacturer's support site for a firmware update.
