WIFI Anywhere....

hey guys, wanted to share it with you about an app called pdanet, it allows you to use your phones internet signal on your laptop desktop...

Installation process is really easy, and it allows you to connect your phone either through usb or wifi and run it...on top of it all you can still text while using it...

THE APP is not free...right now its on sale for 15 dollars, ....unlike usual 30.

I love it so far....
comments?

do you know what the app allows you to do...it allows you to use your phones wifi to use on your laptop....

the 3g roaming costs 20 dollars a month...
with this, you can be in middle of nowhere (almost) and use internet...

I think your missing the point lol?

I think you are not realy understanding this.

Whether you use this ap or WiFi hotspot you are still going to get charged by the carrier (or your data bundle will be used).

with verizon smart phone usage, you get unlimited data package for 20 dollars, (smart phone fee)...I've asked that in detail when i purchased several dozen of smart phone from verizon in the past few years.

I am not sure about other networks, but this how its done on verizon :)

...so you do save great heaps of money :).
By the way, your phone acts like its doing all the processing through its browser, meaning it costs extra to run external devices, with this, it does not.

read app description if you are not sure.

It costs me nothing to connect my laptop to the internet using hotspot thats already on my HTC desire which came with froyo update.

*sigh*.
1. either you got a special promotion.
2. either your phone is rooted a certain way
3. your illegaly doing this.
4. depends on what network you are on as stated above.
5. htc desire is not a verizon wireless phone...

HTC Desire - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
(link showing all carriers)...verizon not being one of them.

PdaNet
(washington post article regarding pdanet and benefits of it)

Google
(benefits of running pdanet)

....hopefully helps for all people....
*sigh*...should of added for verizon to it....

My carrier doesn't charge for that.

Wow, cell phone service providers in the USA really bend people over. They lock you into contracts, lock your phone so you can't switch providers, charge you much higher rates than in most other countries for any features, including calls/texts/data plan, and then they charge you more to use the same data plan if you connect your phone to another device?

When are you going to tell Verizon to go F themselves?????

Go to another country sometime and get service for your phone. You'll realize what you are missing...

I'm writing this using my laptop connected via WiFi to my HTC Desire HD Hotspot, which in turn is connected to the internet via 3G. No Pdanet. If I can send this, it works :-)

PDANet is a good app for those who don't wish to root. The more adventurous among us root and use any of the free tethering apps on the market. I prefer to have wireless/bluetooth capability.

Can't believe people in the US have to pay for every little thing on their phone. So after you buy the phone and pay per month you would have to pay another monthly contract to use the hotspot feature that comes with the phone? Ridiculous. If everyone does that then networks must be getting bucket loads of money.

Over here (UK) after you pay for a contract (minutes, texts and internet) you're done. You can use anything on the phone as long as you stay within those three limits.

for people talked about other countries, i know guys i know, i used to live in russia heh, and they are lot more flexible there....verizon loves its money, and this a way to save some.

*in addition, the app is free on the market, it comes with 15 day full trial, after that, it still works fine but you cannot acess secure sites without purchasing a code, which you can buy on their sites.

*also, i discussed the htc desire, i posted LINKS even, explaining that this discussion is mostly for people that have to pay extra for hotspot...such as verizon.
HTC desire is not a verizon carried phone.....which makes that phone none applicable.

*and lastly, maybe one day i will root, maybe one day :p....
i heard with rooting you can do wireless tething and such heh.

any other comments o.O?

If not rooted, then this app is a good choice. If rooted, you can do better with one of the free apps on the Android market - like Wireless Tether.

That being said, I think something Fallen Sputnik said needs to be clarified. The legality of using this type of app is the same whether or not you are rooted. So don't think you are OK using the Pda Net application. You are still breaking the TOS with Verizon (I cannot speak to other carriers) by tethering. Just because you don't have to root to tether doesn't mean it is OK with Verizon. So if you wirelessly tether another device and use the phone's data plan to get online with the other device, without paying for Verizon's 3G Hotspot Service, you are doing it illegally. It doesn't matter which program you use.

No, the word "illegal" doesn't apply here because there is no law that forbids it.
You are doing it uncontractually, though!
Big difference.

also...i like how you are talking about legality of things when half of the forum is dedicated to rooting phones, and you bluntly indicate that you have a rooted phone yourself, double edged sword there.

how about the fact that pdanet isnt new and theres also easytether which is cheaper and work just as good (i wouulkdve stayed with pdanet had they transferred my license from my old blackberry, but thats why theres competition)

easyether is not better in many ways :)....but whatever works for you heh.
and it should have transferred your license, you should of contacted them about it if it didnt.

i am not sure what it being new or not has to do with anything by the way, if i find a good app that some people have not known about that was released on day 1 of android platform, i will share it, whats wrong with that :)

Actually, not ONLY do you have to subscribe to a 3 ( THREE ) year contract in Canada, you also have to pay 8$ for Caller ID, and 8$ for Voicemail. The lowest smartphone plan starts at 50$ with only 200min, unlim text, and 500mb of data. On top of that will be extra data, caller ID, voicemail, mobile hotspot, and many other missing features. By the end of the month, you'd be lucky to pay less than 70$...more like 100$
